I hope they read this maybe it will now make more sense. I didnt know all this either, but Cher has had an amazing life and career. There is so much wonderful footage available of all she has done- its amazing. She has stood the test of time.

I was a Junior in HS when this video came out. My dad is a retired Naval Officer and he hated this video. He grounded me because he caught me watching it after 9:00 on MTV, lol! Totally worth it!

Just wondering did the song help boost their recruitment numbers? Also are they real sailors?

@@gemineyeintuition6626 Yes i concur "It was filmed aboard the USS Missouri in 1989. The U.S. Navy was hoping it would boost recruitment, as they had no budget for TV ads at the time. In storyboards presented to the Navy, Cher was wearing a jumpsuit, but came out singing in a fishnet bodysuit and risque swimsuit showing almost her whole rear-end. It caused a lot of controversy. The captain of the ship was almost removed from his on-board duty. World War II veterans were angry because it diminished a historic site. The USS Missouri was the site of Japan's surrender in September 1945, effectively ending WWII. Even MTV banned the video, but later showed it after 9pm." In the parts of the video where she has actual clothes on, that's because the Navy Commander in charge of the ship didn't want her performing after she came out in that Sheer Fit. He said he wanted her to change clothes and her director said no, so the compromised with her changing in some other scenes.

@@thefullnomad6543 Oh yeah they were married 5 years. If you see the Sonny and Cher Christmas special, the little baby she sings too is Elijah. After she had Elijah they put the Sonny and Cher show back on TV. In fact when the reunion show started she was pregnant with him, that's why that season she wore more loose fitting things.

I have watched her since the beginning, never missed the Sonny & Cher show as a teen. You could not escape knowing about her relationship stuff cuz it affected their TV show, so it was tabloid worthy. She was pure class through it all, IMO. One of the reasons she is an icon! (Talent counts here too)

John Farnham did it too, but in Australia, so it probably doesn’t count to Americans. It counts to me though, as he’s an Aussie artist that never even tried to break into the American market. But he had a number one in every decade from the 60s to the 2010s. Six decades. Insane. Also, his biggest hit was You’re the Voice, which is one of Australia’s national anthems. The Whispering Jack tour version is my favourite, but he recently performed it (same power, and in the same octave!) for the bushfire relief concert, at the age of 71. That video is on the official Queen RU-vid channel.

The same is actually true of Cliff Richard, who set the record starting in the 50s, and still going now 80 but looking 20 years younger.

And the Navy enacted new regulations to prevent unauthorized films/videos on ships after this was released.
