"Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time
For y'all have knocked her up.
I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe
I was not offended
For I knew I had to rise above it all
Or drown in my own sht.
Come on Maggot Brain
Go on Maggot Brain"
Eddie Hazel - Lead guitar
Spoken word on the intro by George Clinton
Tawl Ross - Rhythm guitar
Billy Bass Nelson - Bass guitar

(Belated) Bicycle Day series (Part 1, 3 of 8) Gotta include some psychedelic funk. Funkadelic was one part of the Parliament-Funkadelic Collective, a rotating stable of musicians in two groups headed by the great George Clinton. “P-Funk” began as Clinton’s doo-wop group The Parliaments in 1956. Funkadelic was formed in 1964 (originally as a backing group for The Parliaments), but became its own prominent funk rock outfit when Clinton briefly lost the name rights to The Parliaments, and released their first album in 1970. This song is the title track for their third album in 1971. It was recorded in one take (with Clinton reciting the brief intro); Clinton told guitarist Eddie Hazel to play as if he had just been told his mother was dead. The result was so intense Clinton faded out most of the other musicians in the final mix.
