@@retroreactions.... I HATED this album for song long. On this; and all later later work, they went too meaningless pop for me in a way that was more sellout than Gabriel, or 80s Yes, or 80s Floyd etc etc. Then I realized I do like at least 3 on here, this being one - it was probably seeing the Wembley concert that changed my opinion. But I can totally understand how many fans feel this is a step too far. Ironically for me, their very last album without Phil (Calling All Stations) is head and shoulders above their other very last output as a trio 😎
Invisible Touch is one of Genesis most successful albums. They never abandoned their prog roots. Tony has a lot to do with it, an example is this magnificent Domino.
This song shows that Genesis were fully living in their time. Some accuse them of leaving prog rock for a more commercial style. I think that if they pursued the same path, the same accusers would accuse them to repeat themselves on and on. Genesis went from pure songwriting to more refreshing and dynamic jam sessions. I hear some "Lamb Lies Down" hints in this tune. One of their greatest from the 80's
Saw this live in Sept 1986, my dreams came true after loving Genesis for 10 years by then. Great memories revived by your terrific review! Thank you! Still have the T-shirt and it still fits!
One of Genesis best songs. The Live version of this song is mind blowing.. Typical Genesis Progressive Song, love this song. Check out the live version it's awesome. Genesis never fails to impress. They will be missed
It still sounds amazing. I love the 80´s sounds anyway, but this doesn´t sound like anybody else but Genesis. They had the modern sounds of that time and still, they sounded original.
This song is about a nuclear war. Nukes are being launched in a Domino effect. “In The Glow Of The Night”. “their features are changing, their bodies dissolve and I am alone”.
Best song on the album I saw this live at Wembley in 1987, it was great live as well I haven’t heard this in a while, it still sounds great, great reaction as usual Those Tony banks chords in the second part always get me
Genesis brought their best into the 80's - Phil strong voice, perfect melody, long intricated composition but with modern and epic sound by Hugh Padgham. I love this double track 😊 Greetings from Prague 👍
It has aged well, a look back at their 70s prog epic roots with 80s touches, best from the IT album by far. Live versions are even better, the usual excellence all around, but Phil Collins' vocals are a touch above the rest, IMHO. I'll understate, Phil could sing. The more you listen to this one, the more it grows on you
Always brilliant live, and very much a throwback to their 70s Prog. The best track on Invisible Touch by far. Phil done a brilliant job on this live running all over the stage and getting the audience involved. A great track to their catalogue.
Hi Brandon, I'm for Genesis "old school" but this one is good (first time listening to it from LP!). Some sounds are too 80's, in live performance everything goes better. This is the album with five hits and in 86/87 all the world heard Invisible touch, Tonight (3 times!), Land of confusion (beautiful video!), In too deep, Throwing it all away. What remains of Genesis music? Domino. Listen to live version. Thank you for "Genesis sunday"!
Glad you like this one! Yes, I'm getting several requests for all 3 live versions....We love our Genesis Sundays! We still have a long way to go, I wanna hear their entire catalog!!
Man, cool reaction. But you have to do the live version of it! There this song become much more bigger and more epic. And it will show, that Genesis are/were one of the greatest live-bands ever! Take the We can't dance - version from 1992 or The Last Domino- version from 2007. There you get the full experience!
@@retroreactions.... Great idea to add both. Then you'll maybe see the differences between both shows regarding live sound quality and development of the lightshow! ✌🏼 Greetings from Germany
One of their finest post-Gabriel tracks. The Lebanon reference is interesting: I've always thought of this as a serial killer/terrorist's confession, a desperate attempt to shift the blame for his actions onto the woman who left him.
For Anything She Does do yourself the favour and watch the official video. It’s a perfect example for Genesis humour. They didn’t play ASD live, Tony said it’s too difficult to do live. And of course, watch Domino live. The show is awesome, no matter which tour (they played it on every tour), and choose a clip that includes Phil’s introduction to the song, in which he demonstrates the domino principle in stunning action. You’ll love it.
Too difficult? Wow now I'm curious....Yes, I will react to a live one of Domino, we will see which version has the most votes when the time comes. Thanks
@@retroreactions.... Tony mentioned that Genesis played every song from Invisible Touch on that particular tour, except for ASD. And he added “…which is a difficult song to do”. You can find it in this little documentary (Edit: I changed the link, the first one was incomplete): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L--jJOwh6Vk.html
Nice one Brandon. I think they probably made this album with you in mind 🤓 😉 Got to see them do this in Amsterdam during the 2007 reunion tour. Great with all the state of the art film show and lighting. My favourite sections are the mellow Domino parts - and love 'Phil's fills' on the drum pads in part 2. Looking forward to your Lamb and Duke reviews Brandon 😀👍 🙂
Haha, I was 11 and they probably knew I'd be reacting to it 37 years later 😁 Duke starting this Sunday and The Lamb probably when I hit 5K subs! Thanks
my memory is phil, tony, and mike all did first solo albums when genesis took a hiatus while phil tried and failed to save his marriage. that was earlier than this though.
Nice choice today…. “Domino” is probably my favorite track from Invisible Touch. Your expression just before your pause was priceless!! When that fast part started…. I knew it was coming, but you surely didn’t! Lol Early today…. Maybe another headed our way?
Thanks. Oh good, as long as my funny expressions are entertaining LOL...the face doesn't lie! Just the 1 today, but I'm sure I'll throw in 1 or 2 double days this week!
I love the double days, but as you know, I’ll still be checking out every day regardless! Sooo much great music to hear!! Also I see you’re closing in very soon on 4000 subscribers! I meant to ask you if you’re out of harms way of the hurricane? I hope all is well my friend.
And trust me I am eternally grateful for your daily loyalty and support. I can't even say that I do that with any reaction channel that I watch, so I know what a gift that is....Yes, 4K in about 1 or 2 days, will be hitting 10 times the subs of my other channel lol....Yes, I am safe here, thank goodness, just some rain, but I'll be staying in!
So lyrically I think this is Tony's commentary on the Cold War, (look up Domino Theory) which was very much alive in 1986 and how things can escalate out of control. Do you see what you have done?! Think mushroom clouds.
I think it's great that you love Genesis.. I'm glad you're reacting to so much of there music.. I think you do a great job reacting and analyzing them.. Keep it going.. Also love that your retro👍.. Just my strong suggestion.. If you can react to the entire album of seconds out live.. You will be amazed.. All the older songs but sung by Phil... It's a Wow! Album start to finish.. And you should probably know all the songs...
Yes, loved them since the 80s, but wow my experience on this channel deep diving into their catalog this year has been such a joy. There's a reason they have a weekly spot on the channel! I will add your vote for SO full album to my list, thanks so much for watching!
Great reaction as always! I first heard this song in the video of their 1992 live concert at Knebworth (England). Both versions are so good!. And the concert is fantastic, with their usual medley of oldies!
At the end I am thinking this was written about Global Warming (of course, GW was not really a thing then; but Earth Day was. This band seemed to have many premonitions). Speaking to mankind at the end asking: "Do you know what you've done?" and "There is nothing we can do" Death awaits regardless. When your time comes, it comes. Only the music lasts forever?
Best combo off the album for sure, where you get the best of both worlds: Prog and 80s Genesis. When the drums come in at the start of 'Domino', I always crank the volume "up to eleven” and start chair dancing, lol !😂 Thanks, as always, for another fine reaction, Brandon!
Brandon, great reaction to a great Genesis classic. This and Land of Confusion are probably my two favourite tracks on the album, and both fantastic performed live. Some trivia Phil would always explain the domino effect before the start of the song, as something happens to these people here ( points to one part of the audience and the lighting crew would illuminate that part) that then effects these people over here, than then impacts those people over there. Crowd would roar as they got illuminated. Phil would repeat getting faster all the time. Really got the crowd going.
Hi there! Hope all is well. Nice, that huge drum opening of LOC never gets old! Really cool idea, their creativity certainly extended into the live setting...Thanks for watching!
You've done it again ! another brilliant reaction. Live , this was the highlight of the show for many , including myself. An absolute classic from Genesis that they played live on every tour .
Yes, they all did their solo stuff and when they got together again, they brought the bits and pieces they hadn’t finished solo and worked on them together to form a Genesis songs. Abacab and a Domino both show their prog chops remain. Great reaction and a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Cheers.
Genesis always seemed to be in a transitional stage with their music. When I listen to this, it automatically reminds me of the, 'shapes', album and also, 'We Can't Dance', in parts of the performance. They truly were, 'progressive', within their own right! This is pretty much the epitome of their 80's work, for me. The culmination of everything going back as far as ATTWT, up to the then, present day of 1986. This was the _first_ album of theirs that I bought on release, having missed out on the 1983 one by a few months, (having to save up pocket-money and leftover school lunch money to buy it), so is always going to be tiny bit special. 'In The Glow Of The Night', captured the Summer months of 1986, for me, as it was when I first listened to it. It seemed to hit the mood almost perfectly. The outro part kind of making you feel like drifting off to sleep, until the, 'nightmare', begins, that is! The start of The Last Domino being as you'd expect for Genesis at the time, (and why wouldn't it be?), geeing things up, waking up the sleepers, so to speak. Sparking a bit of an adrenaline spike to prepare you for what's to come. The nightmare unfolds with a surprisingly upbeat melody, it has to be said, but then this song is full of unexpected twists. Done live, the, 'Domino suite', as it was known was quite theatrical, in it's own way, with Phil going through the domino theory with the audience affecting people over here, with people over there, etc. with the crowd responding wherever he happened to point. All good fun. I think the delusion the person in the songs is going through of having lost their love, but is somehow in a state of denial, blaming it on them as in, 'do you know what you've done/begun?', as he descends into a pit of delusional despair of seeing all the nightmarish images of dissolving children in rivers of blood, etc. and eventually comes to the conclusion that no matter what, 'there's nothing you can do, you're the next in line', he's still doomed to his fate being the, 'last domino', in his eventually demise. 'You've gotta go, Domino.' Invisible Touch came out in '86, one year after Phil's, 'No Jacket Required', album, so you could say he was a bit of a busy bee at this time.
Great reaction Mr Brandon; I think your background colors are spot on for some of the content of the song and also reminiscent of a line from “say it’s alright Joe”.👍
Brandon, enjoyed your appreciation for this!! Sometime if you get a chance on your own, check out the live version from The Way We Walk tour. It's even more powerful live!!! One of my favorite performances from that tour!!!!
Oh hell, Brandon: This is GREAT! I love it!! Are you converting me? 😲. I wish I could go back in time and watch this live. It must have been amazing. I saw Phil solo circa 1995 and he was great…
Haha, don't worry I know Sussudio well so I'm sure it will never be on the channel. I do love Two Hearts though, would think that you don't? How about Something Happened on the Way to Heaven?
@@retroreactions....Two Hearts is fine as a pop song and Something is okay. Almost as bad as Sussudio is the first song on the Genesis 3x3 EP called Paperlate (1982). I hope that will never be on the channel either, lol.
Brandon would be great if you (& us) celebrate your 4k subs with the reaction to Yes, "The Gates Of Delirium", in which case I recommend having several handkerchiefs on hand 😢😢 for the final part ('soon") of that piece of art.
Oh lovely, good to know I'm gonna cry again lol....Well, it will happen sooner than later, but I think you'll be happy with my 5K choice (we already talked about it, hope you got a bulk discount on the pamphlets LOL)
🥰🥰🥰 I'm well jealous watching you hear all these songs/bands for the first time, bear in mind, back then, you waited from album to album release before your next "favourite of all time" one came out 😂 admittedly, you never had to wait too long with the likes of Genesis, Jeff n Co around and we had a great backup of mainstream bands around as well, the BeeGees, Dire Straits, there was just so many, Michael Jackson (whom I believe is innocent, a dickhead yeah, but an innocent one 😔) I live on the coast and I'm privileged to have access to a private beach area, I'll make a doobie, go sit on the beach and play my tunes breathing the beautiful Irish sea air watching the sun set over Ireland. You can't actually see Ireland 🤣🤣🤣 but it's right ahead of us, I can see North Wales to the left of me though 🙄
Haha, never really thought about that. I can pick and choose from 3 decades for instant sonic pleasure! I am definitely lucky and spoiled on this channel. Wow, that sounds like heaven!! Thanks for sharing my friend...
Hi Brandon, good Genesis! Have a suggestion for your listening pleasure. Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield. Early 70’s . Might recognize opening tune from The Exorcist. Instrumental (mostly) he plays them all.
@@retroreactions.... the Knebworth one is fun. He has a bit of audience participation at the beginning. Actually, one of your other commenters left two links for you. I watched the Knebworth one. And anything from that performance or Wembley 1987 is cool.
To be honest, "in the glow of the night" is the only song I kept listening to through the years from this album. When I shared a moment with a girlfriend, I would put on Throwing it all... or In too deep, which for that matter, was the same as playing Phil's beautiful ballads, One more night or Against all Odds, which I really liked.
I loved "Invisible Touch." I quit complaining about "the loss of prog" in the '80s and really got into the sounds of the time. The thing that changed my mind was the appearance of Marillion. They were carrying the prog torch, and as long as someone was, then all was OK. If Yes, Tull, and Genesis wanted to have some fun, then that was OK. (Pallas, Pendragon and IQ were also out there doing excellent prog in the '80s.) Weirdly, my favorite song on "Invisible Touch" wasn't on "Invisible Touch." It was the b-side "Feeding The Fire." (I added it to a cassette I made of the album, so I always think of it being there.) Another great blast from '86 was "Emerson, Lake & Powell." Stunning stuff! A brilliant album!
Very well said! I just discovered IQ for myself (a suggestion from Brandon, actually) and love allot of their music (Road of Bones) and yes on Marillion….just discovered them about two years ago. Great band, and vastly undervalued in the US, as many prog bands are. And I’m not even a prog fan. But damn, I’m finding more and more that I like!
@@helenespaulding7562 IQ blows me away every time! I highly recommend the latest stuff by Pendragon: "Love Over Fear" and their new EP "North Star." That's a great place to start if you've never heard them.
Great outlook on the transition of music in the 80s. I adore IQ after only hearing about 3 of their songs. They will be returning to the channel this week! I will add Feeding The Fire to my list, thank you!
@@TheRKae wow….Pendragon has a real Marillion vibe. I’ve noticed that with IQ as well. Was this a common sound of British prog from the late 80’s onward? Brandon would love Love Over Fear, but it’s too late for his channel. Wanted to ask you if you like Pineapple Thief? If you are not familiar, you should check them out. Try White Mist, or Last thing on My Mind.
If the DREI had a Steve Hackett guitar that could break through or partially replace the overproduced, mellow Tony Bank sound, then this would be a masterpiece; without that awful fade out, of course. I admit I was addicted to the sweet and sour Throwing It All Away at that time (a live version); I don't remember what got into me back then. In the last few weeks I've often listened to the awesome 1973 Rainbow concert in the car. When Peter Gabriel makes his comedic announcements and translates them into singing, Iactually long for Phil's straight voice, e.g. in THE MUSICAL BOX. So everyone has his own taste.✌👍
Yeah, their solo stuff definitely overlapped with their Genesis albums and tours. _... and then there were three ..._ was released in 1978, then Mike's and Tony's first solo albums came out in 1979. They went back into the studio in 1980 as Genesis and recorded _Duke._ In 1981 Genesis released _Abacab_ and at the same Phil Collins first solo album _Face Value_ came out. Phil recorded _No Jacket Required_ and went on a big tour supporting the album in 1985 and a year later in 1986 Genesis released _Invisible Touch_ and toured for the better part of that year and into 1987.
I must be out of tune... Checked the comments and all loved it except me and I'm no PG freak. Sonically perfect, but I kept waiting for the subtle changes, hooks, melodies and harmonies. For me they never came. Perhaps I just don't like upbeat stuff, for instance The Knife was never a favourite of mine. I love mid era more than early or late but I've found myself going back in their discography rather than forwards. Learned something today, Thanks.
Again, I think this song/songs is better live, which I've chosen just two. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OXiauJsNwQI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ap4an6siukU.html
"Invisible Touch" (1986): a strange album in line with the band's poprock (well assumed since "...And Then There Were Three...", 1978). To make a long story short, let's say that back in the studio, the only three remaining members of GENESIS embark on a new production. But there is definitely no consensus. Phil Collins does not want the band to invest in deeply worked compositions, structured from A to Z; he militates for DIY improvisations, jams and riffs. Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford disagree, fearing a chaotic, borderline inaudible end product; but ultimately, they decide to follow Collins' choice. Result: An impression of aggregation of everything and nothing. The first part is clearly signed by Collins, with all its melodic pop character, catchy rhythm, earworms; the second part is clearly Banks' hallmark, with his never-quite-quite passion for progrock-like songwriting. However, while Banks lives up to his immense talent as a keyboardist, the album doesn't make me hear his conviction. This sometimes gives me the impression that he was content to deliver the bare minimum, perhaps not very proud of the work accomplished by the band. Alas, the albums that will follow will not catch up. This is just a personal opinion; sorry for the fans. On the other hand, you chose the composition ("Domino") which, in my opinion, is the most interesting of the album. Thanks.
Huge Genesis fan, here. Not my favorite stuff by them. There are sections that are good. But there are also sections that miss. .. and are kinda… “silly” sounding. It’s kinda like they were in a hurry, and came up with something that was “good enough,” by certainly not the brilliant thing they would have done in the past. Part 2 especially. Pop-band-tryin- to-sound-hard. It’s like Phil got his way too often in the writing at this point (or they lacked ideas). The electric drums…. “Badum… Badum… Badum” over-engineering production sounds (like YES’s Trevor Horn days, I.e. Owner of a Lonely Heart). It’s all preparation, and no H. For me.
@@retroreactions.... absolutely. Love your reactions. You have a gift for putting certain things into words. Love how you describe things. It helps me to see them a certain way… things I hadn’t tried to describe, or hadn’t though of in that way. Also, you have a calming “zen” like way about your love for the music. You’re reactions are one of the limited few I watch. I nearly always agree with your take. Keep up the great work!
@@Kendh thanks. I didn’t have much time to describe things perhaps the way I could have… but I’m glad you got my point. I sure do love this band. Been my favorite since I was about 14. But there are times, sections, moments in their later work that are “unbecoming” of their brilliance. Must be hard to keep up the brilliance when you have set such a high precedent. And for so long. I forgive them. Lol
Great observations and praise for the top track if this album so prog pop and fabulous vocal by Phil. Wish it had real drums though. This is the total reverse of the appalling everything she does. Please never review that piece of garbage
Genesis without Steve Hacketts subtle guitar genius, diminished at an ever increasing rate after Trick of the tail, and wind and wuthering. The addition of brass was the final straw for me.
