They both were service men, a Colonel and a Captain. They bought served in Afghanistan. The part about I'm not your son, your not my father was something James father said as they both departed for Afghanistan. His father just said "we're just two grown men saying goodbye". James decided to use it in this sad/beautiful song. By the way I absolutely love James Blunts voice. You Immediately know whose singing when you hear his unique voice. By the way Great reaction!

To me, James Blunt singing "I'm not you son, you're not my father: We're just two grown men saying goodbye" means he's rising above being the little boy to become an equal with his dying father, speaking to him man-to-man.

This song was done in one take. Raw, no autotune or anything. James and his father had served in the military. He has true emotion in this song to his father.

Done in a single take, James said how hard it was to sing this with his dad right beside him. At the end of the video only Charles had dry eyes. He asked why is everyone crying? I'm still here! He was saying that they are both grown so it is ok for the father not to be the caregiver. James will take care of the monsters!

Both men (father and son) were in the military. Every time one was deployed they would say to each other, “I’m not your son, you’re not my father, we’re just two grown men saying goodbye.” I thought it was beside included it in this tribute song to his dad.

Thank you so much for this. I know it isn’t easy to watch, but I’m glad watching it changed your opinion of this version. 😊 That IS Blunt’s real father sitting beside him. This was recorded in one take, in a closed studio, with limited support staff present. Everyone but Blunt’s Dad was in tears when it was finished. Dad apparently looked around and said, “What are you all crying about? I’m still here!” Concerning those lines: I’m not your son You’re not my father We’re just two grown men Saying good-bye… I think what Blunt was saying to his Dad was, ‘I’ll be with you right to the end, and I will take care of you, but in order to do that you have to see me as a capable, adult man and not as the little boy that you used to protect from the monsters.” What do you think? There is another of James Blunt’s songs, No Bravery, that is also difficult to watch. He wrote it about his service in Kosovo with the British Military. I guess I’ll send that through Reactr, too…sorry! 🤷🏼‍♀️😁
@firstinthedance
@firstinthedance Год назад
I saw in an interview with James that he meant that line to mean that as a child, his Dad was his hero. Then as he grew up, he saw that his father was imperfect (as we all are). Now they are both grown-ups, and with that comes understanding and the ability to relate to each other as equals and true friends, instead of just a father/son relationship (authority figure/child). The song also acknowledges the role reversal that occurs as parents age and it becomes the child's turn to become the caregiver. And although James didn't actually say it, when he says "I'm not your son; you're not my father. . ." I see it as him telling his Dad that he is a grown-up who will be ok. I think he is releasing his Dad from his parental duty to hang on for his son's sake. He is giving his father permission to let go. I had a similar conversation with my mom when she was dying.

Father/son relationships can be volatile. The line "I'm not your son, you're not my father" is saying that we're saying goodbye and putting aside all of the fights and arguments over the years. They are parting as "two grown men, saying goodbye". No need for regrets, recriminations or blame for anything in the past. His father was dying of kidney disease but, as a result of this song/video, a distance relative stepped up and donated a kidney, so James' father lives on.

“I am not your son, you are not my father” means that they both are now two grown up men standing equal to say good bye. Which means it’s okay to say good bye now without feeling things are still left undone or unsaid, without feeling that one is still responsible to another. It’s okay now to leave.

What James mean with "I'm not your son, you're not my father..." is that on those final minutes we're just humans. And we may grief but a father/son(mother) relationship goes beyond that. Fortunately i still have my father, but i don't know how i will react once he is gone, so i applaud James tribute.

This is why I'm so loving Dan Vasc's music. Not everyone will "go there," like either of these men. Wow! I've just gone to James' channel to subscribe. Thank you for the link.

Oh, I hope you enjoy James Blunt--he’s been one of my favourites for years and a best-selling artist all over the world, but the strange thing is that people seem to either love him or hate him...and he has a LOT of haters. He has gained a reputation for his sense of humor when putting his critics down with snappy tweets. You might remember his first hit song, You’re Beautiful? I think it stood out because his voice is truly unique.👍

@@auntiethetical I just "discovered" James Blunt a couple of weeks ago (yes, thanks to the Monsters video) and I am kind of shocked how many great songs he has. I guess, ironically, that I just wasn't that in to the ones he became famous for and that was played on the radio... but "The Truth", "No Bravery", "Wisemen" and a lot of others are just awsome. I also watched one of his concerts on RU-vid, as many people say he is even better live, and now I really really REALLY want to go to one of his concerts. I am a bit bummed he just finished a tour last year... I wonder when his next one might be?

Some of my most favorite things in life had to grow on me. Certain foods, one of my best friends, and. . .James Blunt's voice. To be honest, I didn't love his voice right away either - I usually prefer deeper male singing voices. It was THIS VIDEO. I couldn't stop watching it and the more I watched it, the more I fell in love with his voice. After watching it over and over again, I went and bought all his albums. I was stunned at how many great songs he has. He is much more popular in Europe and he never really got the recognition he deserves in the U.S. He is an exceptional songwriter and musician, and he immerses himself in the emotions of every song he performs, for every performance. He is a true artist who sees it as his job to take his audience "on an emotional journey."
@brittag.pedersen5340
@brittag.pedersen5340 Год назад
......Those lines I think means that when it comes to it all despite the roles/titles we have that binds us together here on earth - either biological and emotional - then in the end we are individual human beings and here he sees not a father and son saying goodbye, but also just to grown men saying goodbye! Just my opinion though :)

"I'm not your son, you're not my father" maybe James was in a state of denial that he's losing his father. He was thinking that it was someone else. According to Google, Denial is a defense mechanism that helps minimize the pain of the loss. God Bless all who lost love ones. ❤️
@GrandmasGotGraceLW
@GrandmasGotGraceLW Год назад
I don't think so. I think that at that very moment, he was REALIZING he was going to lose him, and that he was "manning up," so to speak. Even more than that, @auntiethetical has had the correct take on that, I think.

No, he isn't in denial because later in the song, he calls him "Daddy." The line was about being true friends and equals, who understood each other, without any need to hold onto baggage from past relationship roles. He was also telling his father that he'd be ok and he was giving him permission to let go because they were just "two grown men saying goodbye."

James Blunt is an extraordinarily good song writer and musician . there are multiple good tracks but i think you will like No bravery which is an anti war song based on his experience as a un peace keeper during the Bosnian war and then Carry you home which in my view is unmissable . on a different tangent and diving further back i think you would love Lay Down by the Strawbs a beautiful folk rock song based on the 23 psalm and in my time of dying by led zeppelin which is so powerful - not perhaps what you would expect from led zeppelin in case you have heard the nonsense about them and then brothers in arms by Dire straits.
