Like all Led Zeppelin songs, it grows on you, You’re not sure how much you like it, but then u end up missing it. GREATEST ROCK BAND ALL TIME!

It was named after a black dog that was hanging around the entrance to the studio. You can't really get the groove, because I believe the guitar riff is in 5/4 time, but the drums are in 4/4, that means the beats sync every twenty notes

Kashmir is one of LZ best and a real classic. When The Levee Breaks is a great cover.

You should listen to the studio version of Dazed and Confused. First played by Jimmy Page when he was in the Yardbirds but it became a favourite with Led Zeppelin

Listen to 20 more Zeppelin songs then come back to this...From personal experience, I guarantee it will grow on you. They played outside the box more than any rock band in the 70's. Definitely go to When The Levee Breaks next....it hits hard!! Also, Going To California is pure ear candy.

Zeppelin made music to make you think and cause discomfort....through lyrics and composition. I love your reaction, truly your first listen I can tell. It will grow on you though...as does all of their music 🎶🤌🏼

Black Dog is just one of the many types of songs LZ does. It's fun to watch them perform it in concert, but it's not a sit down and listen song especially when your not that familiar with their music. They are known for their unique song construction, unexpected tempo changes, amazing guitar riffs, powerful drum rolls, and Robert Plant's vocals. Led Zeppelin are also great live performers, and since you have only reacted to their recordings, it would be nice to watch your reactions to an actual live song. As they never play their songs the same way when they play live, it is important to find the right performance. I think you would really enjoy their song Kashmir live at Knebworth 1979 official video. This has all the elements I mentioned and everything you said was missing. It is an epic performance where you can see and hear how good this band is. A second choice in my opinion would be Since I've Been Loving You live at MSG 1973 official video or Stairway to Heaven from the same concert. Lastly I would like to mention that Jimmy Page the guitarist was a highly sought after studio musician prior to starting Led Zeppelin, and he played guitar and harmonica on some of Tom Jones early songs.

The members of Led Zeppelin were all state of the art players and could do a lot of things that other bands couldn't. In Black Dog they are purposely combining different time signatures between drums and guitar; it creates tension, then explodes when they meet in the chorus. Structually (and lyrically) this is classic blues, which was foundation of many of Zep's best tracks (before they took it to the next level). As others noted, it's not a simple composition; you need to listen to it a few times, but eventually you'll realize it as one of the classic rock songs of all time. Jimmy Page's solo at the end is fire.

As a drummer the first time I heard this on each stop before Robert starts to sing again you can hear John Bonham click his sticks together every single time. A very interesting and powerful way to state the STOP ✋ 🛑

I was at that show July 29, 1973 so two days from now is the 50th anniversary!… the other pick I would actually have for you next is the studio version of Going to California so you can hear their beautiful all acoustic side as well. “Since I’ve Been Loving You” from their 3rd album is the way to go, studio version first. It’s time to slow it down a little bit and experience this amazing beautiful music.

Zeppelin sometimes had 2 different time signatures in the same song. Sometimes the whole band was in 1 signature and switched up during the song, sometimes the rhythm section was in one time signature while the guitar and vocals were in another.

The radio was the biggest influence on everyone knowing music that wasn’t necessarily our type because we were all listening to the same stations. Zeppelin, Beach Boys and others were before my time in the early 80’s, but they were played frequently, so we knew them. The internet killed the shared musical experience with everyone silo’d into their own niche.

I just looked at your Zep reactions - great job keeping up with the playlists, btw - and I noticed you haven't seen them live yet. 👀 May I suggest "Since I've been Loving You" live at Madison Square Garden 1973? Buckle up and settle in for some kickass blues with a punch. BTW, I personally don't consider Zep a rock band. To me they're more like a blues band that rocks. Especially their first 2 albums. Anyway. Zep live. You won't forget or regret. ✌🏼❤

Black Dog is filled with oddball time signatures and was notoriously difficult to play, and so of course it's hard to move to in a traditional way. But they actually sell it really well, especially because they keep coming back to that straight-8 which suddenly feels so comforting and John Bonham is really making the bell on that ride cymbal ring to signal how solid and relatable that straight section is and that's your chance to traditionally rock out for a little bit. But if you relax and take in the overall feel of it, this song is actually a great rock dance song all the way through. People my age have all danced to it, but I have seen some really sexy dancing to this thing, oh my. And I noticed that Ms B&B really lit up in those straight 8 sections. I agree with her also that I really love his voice in this, and the provocative lyrics of course. And also, great point about how different it is on a first listen.

Jimmy Page said in an interview that he liked Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well" & how the vocals stood on their own before the instruments kick in & that was the inspiration behind the style of this song.

Kudos for spotting the difference between the guitar and drum time signiatures. When this came out it took me a while to figure it out. Rick Beato explains it best.

Everyone was going crazy when LZ performed this to a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden, 1973. I should know because I was there - I sort of remember the tickets being $10 - it was 3+ hour concert...just imagine that! Do yourselves a HUGE favor and listen to them LIVE - the MSG, 1973 concert is a great way to start...the way they adapt their songs to the stage is AMAZING!! Have fun!

Nice reaction guys. That time signature can take a few listens to get the hang of, so you're not alone there. From the same album you will really enjoy "When The Levee Breaks" and for a bit of a slower, bluesier feel, check out "Since I've Been Loving You". Both studio versions I would start with before heading towards the live versions. "How Many More Times" from their debut album is another to check out. For something a bit later on in their catalogue, try "In My Time Of Dying" and "Kashmir" from 1975.

They liked playing around with different time stamps so they only met up on certain beats. I don't know anything about musical structure, but I've heard it adds a challenge.

Fool in the Rain, Rock n Roll and D'yer Mak'er are three of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Don't think you will be disappointed with any of those three. Studio versions.

John Paul Jones wrote this song. No instrument is playing the same song. The members said that this was the hardest song to play live. And yes it is called Black Dog after a Labrador Retriever that hung around during the making of this masterpiece of an album

That's zep very diverse. There catalog is huge. Not everyone will like every song like I do. But that's ok. Imo you should keep listening they will surprise you. Zep forever 😊

this defined "head banging" rock and roll when I was about 16 or so; we LOVED it in the early 1970s!! remember, most all early British rockers were HEAVILY influenced by Black American Blues singers which is where the line "I don't know but I been told, big leg woman ain't got no soul" came from. Yes, it was a concert song; it was not for "ballad" listening. Robert Plant is one of the top 5 "screamers" of all time!!

When I was 8 or 9 in the late 70's this was the first hard rock song I heard. It was at a arcade I would go to and they played this alot on the juke box. I remember this with early arcade video games like asteroids, missile command, thief and football.

Anything from Madison Square Gardens 1973...Since I've been Loving you is always been one of their top tier performances, but everything they do is good to great!

Zeppelin is my favorite group, and as you know there are many of us Zepheds who like to see and hear what "new ears" think of our band! Good or bad, opinion tho yeah, it's usually GOOD, lol. Two songs after this one on the album is one of those "other sides" to Zeppelin, "Battle of Evermore." Acoustic but energetic, lovely, a guest female vocalist, otherworldly, Lord of the Rings lyrics--awesome!

Black Dog packs a wallop like a Sledgehammer. Its the first track on their iconic Untitled album (IV), and with Rock and Roll the 2nd track, it was a one two punch in the gut of heavy power rock when I bought this album in the mid 70s, and it is still.

I lived through the rock earlier years. I'm black went to an all white school only 14 blacks but I had a lot of white friends and we groove to led zeppelin. Jimmy page was one of the best guitar player ever. Music in the 70s was the best. Been to a lot of concerts black dog was one of there best check out grand funk railroad inside out. I believe you'll like it enjoy. The best time in my life

For something very different from them you should take a peek at Rain Song. You will be more than pleasantly surprised. It shows a different side to them and is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorites.

Oh yeah, the 70’s had a LOT of rock groups. BUT so did the 60’s! The golden era of rock 1964-1980. BTW, Led Zeppelin formed in 1968.

May I suggest 'The Lemon Song' not what you will expect! or Kashmir, Dazed and Confused are also just great and different.

So sad! My mom had music playing all the time, so I know music from before I was born. I did the same for my kids, and they are very well versed in all kinds of music! I've listened to their music as well. We still go off on it all!

I was four when this song came out,and one of my older sisters was a huge Zeppelin fan. I remember running and dancing round the living room to this when it came out in 71,and my sister played it over and over. It still sounds as good as then!

Two of the influences for this song are Muddy Waters' 1968 album Electric Mud and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac song OH Well. I suggest listening to OH Well it has the same call and response with the vocals and the music.

With its sequence of time signatures and pauses for vocal soloing, it’s definitely not meant to be danced to…without a continuous groove, the only thing it is for is enjoyment! ☺️

If you guys do movie reviews I would suggest watching in The Song Remains the Same. I believe that's what somebody was referring to as Madison Square Garden. Incredible movie. Sticking with music...
