As a guitar player there are many styles presented by great players very gifted in their particular style technically, but for me personally David Gilmour exhibits the same characteristic which the band has mastered, and that is to resist the tendency to display technical skill in favour of using the guitar to extract emotion from an audience by both a hypnotizing melody and immersing you in a soundscape of passion, and more than often with a highly intellectual social message to drive it all home to be branded on your memory.. I can't count the number of reactions to pink Floyd songs I've watched that brought the host(s) to tears, men, women, old, young.

Now that you've heard the "slow-shredding" of David Gilmour, I think you'll appreciate another fellow named Robin Trower doing his song called Bridge of Sighs, with his bass player James Dewar on vocals. Another slow-shred on guitar that is downright mesmerizing.

Pink Floyd is a journey. I've been a fan for 50+ years. This whole concert is epic. The song was written by Roger Waters, a founding member of the band who's not in this, about when as a kid and he was really sick and felt comfortably numb being medicated. The Prism you're talking about is the cover art from their 1973 album "Dark Side of the Moon". Probably one of their most popular albums. It spent an amazing 900, or more, weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 album charts. I know I added to that. Since I bought the original in 1973 I've had a copy on 8-track, cassette and compact disc. Also a half speed Original Master Recording on virgin vinyl and a Super Audio CD of the original master.

That's the official explanation. But to me, it is Syd's voice talking about his descent into schizophrenia, where he is insulated from life by being "comfortably numb". The guitar solos and the heaviness of the music makes the subject way too important for such a simple event as in that official explanation.
@scalefree
@scalefree Год назад
@@StuartBiliack feel free to believe what you like. he did experience a flashback to when he was sick as a kid but there's a larger context. the complete & accurate story is that during a tour date in Philly Roger got hepatitis & was treated by a shady venue doctor so he could perform that night. the song is a call-&-response between Roger as patient & the shady doc.

When we built it in 89 at Shea Stadium in NY, it was 155 ft tall , filled the entire outfield and went into the bleachers on both sides. There were close to 100 tractor trailers of Production ( Lights, Sound,Scenery etc) There were 3 complete Steel Stages on the Tour, the one they would be playing on that week, one being built in the next city and one traveling to the venue 2 weeks away.!

They used 51 semis in order to 'leap-frog' across their North American Tour. For instance, if they were playing in Tampa, 17 semis were there with the staging and support items. At the same time, 17 semis were taking down the Miami concert venue, and, 17 semis were setting up the next concert location in Jacksonville, and so on. THE most incredible concert tour ever accomplished. Years later they put out the video and DVD set filmed from the end of their World Tour in London, called "Pulse". The North American concert was very similar. I had seen them in 1987 at Tampa Stadium, and suggested to my high school students that I was teaching in 1994, that they should see this concert. I went to the concert and was astonished that the '87 show could be made that much more amazing. Then, when teaching classes the following day, a few students came up to me and said, "Thanks a lot coach. We went to that Pink Floyd concert. You've ruined concert-going for us for the rest of our lives......because, we know right now that we will never see anything to top that."

Pink Floyd has been described as a journey through sonic mastery. They have been one of my favorite bands ever. The song Comfortably Numb is about a person going through a narcotic drug haze and the Comfortable feeling you get after you get from a shot of it. I have never used street narcotics but for surgeries and bad injuries, I have had to have a few shots of it in my life and this song describes the feeling so accurately. I am not recommending that anyone try it to test my experiences. Only under a doctor's orders.

saw Floyd in the 70's on the "Dark Side of the Moon" tour; it was fantastic....keep your headphones on, lie back in the dark, and play "Dark Side of the Moon"; you'll discover why that album was in the Billboard top 100 albums for well over 900 weeks

What is most striking is that each of David's guitar solos are taking you on an instrumental interpretation journey of the previous vocal story of the character's journey through what they have experienced....amazing !!!

Best concert I ever went to,at Earl’s Court,London and I’ve been to thousands as I used to work in event security for 16years from mid 70’s through to ‘91 and seen dozens of truly great shows but this one,THIS ONE,is the daddy of them all. It affected me for weeks after and Floyd was never off the deck.

In case you are wondering , this song takes place at a point of Pink ( Main character in the Wall ) has now completed his “ Wall “ . Now he faces his delusions all the while trying to escape the Wall he spent a lifetime building. The story climaxes in two songs Run like Hell then finally the Trial.

from a music theory standpoint.. this guitar solo is quite sad, which is so interesting to me and makes me understand this song a lot better i think. i think most people think this song is supposed to be very happy and relaxing and while it is relaxing i think its acutall meant to be quite devastating. being comfortably numb when you're high on drugs is this weird feeling of ecstasy and guilt. the solo i think speaks this better than the words can.

Gilmour put more soul into that second solo than most players can muster in a lifetime. He is truly a ( guitar) God walking among mere men.

My feeling was that after a Pink Floyd concert you are no longer the same person. It did something to you that you can't describe. I experienced it in Cologne in 1994. It was like traveling to another universe.

Anything from this concert is epic. Sorrow, learning to fly hell all of them. I am 67 and was privileged to see them three times. It's more than just a concert it's a epic experience sencery overload you don't only hear it you feel it. After all these years I still get goose bumps. There is a DVD of this concert.....sit in front of the big screen put on the head phones turn it up and go on a journey.

David Gilmour is one of a kind! Dave Mustaine of Megadeath once said "David Gilmour can do more with one note than most other guitar players can do with the whole fretboard" At some point in life, you must put on a set of headphones, a dark or dimmed room, and just play "Dark Side of the Moon" start to finish, no video...

Great reaction Phil and Sam! I understand completely your comments about space/time travel. As a young man, I spent hours just laying back and listening to Pink Floyd with headphones on and eyes closed. In addition to the music, they were known for outstanding shows when performing live.

Sorry for double post but the album "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd is the most sold album around the world, selling more than 1 million copies every year since it came out in 1973. So, 50 years later it still sells more than 1 million copies every year. The cover is what you were talking about with the prism pyramid and the light rays. That image, due to the albums incredible global reach, has become for any fan Pink Floyd's "logo"

You want an epic Pink Floyd song, listen to Echoes, if live do David Gilmour Live in Gdansk. For something obscure, listen to Atom Heart Mother. Don't use a live version as they usually did just the band, not the orchestra and choir.

I saw this show in New Orleans alone with 65 thousand others,this is the song,last tour for Pink Floyd but Gilmour still tours. Concert was over the people walked out numb but comfortably. There is many layers to this concert that would take a full page to tell. Enjoy the song as is, their won’t be another that will ever match it,,,,,,,,

I was at that particular concert. I am now 75 and it outdid any concert I went to after. You can see why Gilmour is considered the world greatest guitarist He puts an incredible amount of emotion into it andales it look effortless. Try sorrow from the same concert of you want to see some heavier stuff from him or on the turning away remastered 2019 if you want to see more emotion. Regardless the second solo in comfortably numb is unmatched. The amazing thing is he started on the 60s and still has it. He released the Ukrainian patriotic song red labernum with Ukrainian grip boom box this year. His daughter in law is Ukrainian. Btw Comfortably numb refers to drugs given to fellow member Roger waters who had pain issues prior to a concert in Philadelphia..it got him through the concert. Not illegal drugs.
