Their album "Crime Of The Century" is a masterpiece and one of the greatest concept albums of all time

Supertramp is a great English rock band formed in 1969. They had so many hit songs in the 70's-80's such as "Dreamer", "Give A Little Bit", "Breakfast In America", "Goodbye Stranger", "Rudy", "Take The Long Way Home", "School", "It's Raining Again", "Bloody Well Right", "My Kind Of Lady", "Cannonball", "I'm Beggin' You", "You Win, I Lose" etc.

I've always believed these lyrics are referring to being sent off to boarding school at a very young age, something that's been traditional for the upper class in the UK. It's was scarring and traumatizing for these young boys to be away from their parents, for the sake of becoming successful and logical adults. This came out when I was a kid and I've always loved it.

“Take the Long Way Home” is another 🔥 song by them.

This song was written by Roger (the vocalist sitting at his Wurlitzer) and recounts what happened to him as a child... going from a happy life with birds in the trees, to being sent to boarding school to make him logical, dependable, cynical. He’s questioning who he fundamentally is and why we as a society try to suppress that childish freedom and make us all reliable adult (workers).

One of my favorite bands. I have listened to "The Logical Song" a million times and never got tired. I could not explain why. Masterpiece. I will not suggest any specific Spertramp song to react, because wherever you go with Supertramp (studio version or live) you sure will be mind blown.

'Dreamer' also captures their overall unique sound.

That digital sound you heard was one of the first handheld electronic games. It was electronic football, and that double beep meant you went for it on fourth down and did NOT get the first down.

‘Tramp’ was analogous to ‘bum' in the olden days. A homeless man who wandered or rode the rails.

This song is one of those that you must not only pay attention to the lyric but the arrangement as well.

I just adore your passion, appreciation and way of delving deeply into these songs that I grew up with which are so good. It's so fun to get to hear them through fresh ears again and get transported back to that time. What a rush of good memories... I was 7 or 8 when "The Logical Song" came out and it haunted me. Being an empath and raised on the radio (it was always on), I remember the somber feeling that would wash over me when this track started. It's beautifully haunting. I didn't quite understand it fully back then but it definitely created an impact, especially the part about "and then they sent me away..." TERRIFYING! I have worked in the Healing Arts for almost 30 years and I am just about to complete my training as an addiction/abuse recovery coach. I plan on focusing a lot on Inner Child work. I am just now realizing that song is all about the death of the Inner Child! Thanks, love, you have given me a gift in this reaction. I look forward to your future reactions! "Lady and the Tramp" is a nice use of the word tramp. 🙂 I also really like the song "Take the Long Way Home." Another band with a horn section is Earth, Wind, and Fire. Good starters would be "September" or "Fantasy."

This was a huge album and a huge song in the late 70's. I was 19 years old. It resonated with us!

Supertramp are an incredible band and well worth exploring. My favourite bands are Zeppelin , Rush and a lot of Metal bands but Supertramp have a special place in my heart.

Great band and soooo many innovative sounds in their music. I think they could have even made a box of tik taks sound great.

The guitar solo at the end of "Goodbye Stranger" is a classic. One of the top 100 solos of all time. Roger Hodgson is a genius! That cell phone sound was an old alarm clock.

So many songs have weak lyrics and depend on the music to carry the song, this song has awesome lyrics and an unusual tune. Great song!

That band was fire for sure! Breakfast in America is one of the best albums because almost every song was a hit. Loved them.

Appreciate when you say you missed out 60/70s. It was a different time with sooo many incredible rock bands as well as other music genres. There were album stores in every town. So you would go and buy albums. Sometimes just because you liked the cover. And get introduced to some great stuff. Unfortunately you well never experience listening to music like this. Full albums of great artists had so many songs that you well never hear. There are just to many of them for you to experience. The more you listen to an album. The more you got into the music. You only experience a one time listen of a song. We were able to listen to them many times and make a better connection to the song and music. For just one example. Listen to this album where this song is from. Breakfast In America. I dare ya. lol . And you well get just a small glimpse of what we enjoyed with all the other great albums.

There was early Supertramp, their first 2 albums, then starting in 1974 middle or "classic period" Supertramp, five albums, then later Supertramp which is after Hodgson quit the group in 1983, four albums. The middle 5 albums are the towering pinnacle of the musical career of this group.

This is such a deep song. You’re born into a fabulous world, then by the time you go to school, it’s all over. Then it’s all about being popular and clever, making money, and that’s the way it stays until you’re so very much older and you realise you’ve missed it and it’s too late to start again.

They took their name from a book published in 1908 by author William Henry Davies. The main subject matter of the book was about the lives of tramps living in the UK, US and Canada at the end of the nineteenth century. The book was titled "The Autobiography of a Super-tramp". "Lord is it mine", "Even in the quietest moments", "Casual conversations" the list of poetic, musical, masterpieces goes on.

Supertramp is up there for me with Yes, Genesis and Steely Dan. They don't make music like this anymore!! Make sure & listen to studio versions...sounds are more pronounced.

He was sent to Stowe public school. I played with two of his friends in a band from those schooldays in London in the 70's. They were part of the band that he formed at school. Another ex pupil is Richard Branson!

Tramp by definition isn’t only what you are thinking. Tramp also means hobo. drifter, vagrant, etc.. someone who drifts place to place. But it IS an older term that was popular in 1920s. My fav line is “Watch what you say they’ll be calling you a radical, a liberal, criminal “. Id happily take that label.😂

I never noticed it before, but this song is about "woke" thinking before it had a name. "They will call you a radical" is a great line. This song takes on even more meaning today. Great reaction. Back then a tramp primarily meant a guy who just wandered around from place to place, a "panhandler", maybe working for a few bucks here and there, then moving on. Really like their song Take The Long Way Home. Yes was a successful 70's British Progressive Rock band. Recommend their song Roundabout (Prog rock on steroids!) as a great introduction. I think instrumentally it will impress your socks off if you're wearing any! Production quality is outstanding!They also had hits in the 80's like Owner of a Lonely Heart, which reflected a complete change in style and sound as a band.

You're missing a lot without headphones! The engineering of the 70's was special and there are sounds you can only really appreciate with headphones.

This album is widely regarded as a masterpiece, and it came out when I was in high school and in my mind it's mostly kind of pop rock with just a hint of progressive but it's so well done and very provocative and yeah I totally love that sex solo. And yes Chicago I've been following you on that and I would also say Money by Pink Floyd off of Dark Side of the Moon features a really amazing sax solo followed by a really amazing guitar solo.

They do such a great job of recreating the studio sound in a live show. 2 keyboards and one moves over to sax and adding claps and singing background and a whistle sound effect. Such fun in their songs as well as musicianship and skills. That sound was a alarm clock sound not a cell phone (they weren't invented for another 20 years).

Glad you discovered Super tramp.. Listen to a complete album. This is an album type of band. Best concert I ever saw. Blew me away. They played as good live as what their recorded album sounded like. Concert was on time, no technical glitches, sound balance amazing, no fuss just pure talent and professionalism. That is not easy to achieve in a hockey arena.(I always thought the name was a take on tramp steamers,)

Love Supertramp! The "Cellphone" was played in. It illustrates the word "digital" - it definitely is a sample they put in! Even in the live version. Think of it: this was the time when electronic sounds started. And the first telephones came on the market where you didn't have a bell ringing but an electrically produced sound was coming from them. No mobiles, of course, but electric phones and digitally produced sounds started. This was a sound connected to the word "digital" that's all, and it was a played-in sample. PS: this was clear to me when I first heard the song in 1988, I never wondered what "made" the sound.

Supertramp was the real deal. 🙂Their instrumentation was always top tier. So many great songs for you to enjoy. Long Way Home is my personal favorite though. I think the "cell phone" sound is supposed to be an alarm clock? Time to get up and conform? Just a thought!

Hello! It was such a different world in the 1960, 1970s, early 1980s No cell phones No Internet No cable (it was available, but for most people it was prohibitively expensive.) We had tv....3 channels (ABC, NBC and CBS) on a clear you could get PBS and less than a handful of UHF channels Radio was the only MOBILE entertainment....transistor radios and radios in the car.... A completely different world! The radio airwaves were full of amazing music brought to us by an array of great artists, bands and musicians. You could hardly change the channel without finding a GREAT song. We were spoiled.

SuperStramp dominated the radio airwaves in their prime. You should dive into their work and also give Steely Dan a listen to if you like horns.

i have a poster of their concert world tour in 1984 ,used to have it up on my old bedroom wall in our family home ,moved on and come across it nearly 40 years later ,framed it and put it on my wall ,its of the mime/tight rope artist looking back but you dont see the scissors ready to cut the rope, its very intriguing, a bit boring i know but it probably one of my lifes prized possessions 😊...another mans woman ,now theres a masterpiece ❤

I used love to play their music while driving down the road.

When I first heard this song, when it came out, I did the same "what the heck is that sound they used?". At the time, there was a hand-held electronic football game that was very popular. My friends and I all agreed that 'that sound' was the same sound that football game made whenever you made a touchdown.
