FIRST TIME HEARING The Staple Singers - I'll Take You There 

I love your reaction. The Staple Singers.were a.big influence growing up.

The two chords played by the brass section were sampled and dropped into a song by De La Soul, one of their hits in the late 80s. I love I'll Take You There. The production is so dry and funky, and the lyric are so positive.

That is real music! The 70’s era they knew how to sing for sure!!!!

You would make such a great DJ!

This is why we partied so much, good music. Lots of house parties. And dance clubs.

You really need to see them perform it live. It's the lead singer Mavis,her sosters Cleotha and Yvonne(sometimes her brother Pervis)And their father Pops Staples.

I was only 9 yrs old living in Oregon, I got my first record player that played 45's. My mom took me to go buy my first records. She asked me when we walked in the very first record store I'd ever seen, or been to, Rhonda do you even listen to music or know any singers or songs they sing? I said, momma I have that little transistor radio you and daddy gave me. She said, don't they just have Country and Western music on the radio? My momma is my bestest friend in the whole world ❤. I told her uhuh, they play a lot of different kinds of music,. I knew momma was testing me to see if I really knew of any singers or songs. She said, well you better tell me what records you want to get, the look of sheer surprise come to her face when she seen me digging out a piece of paper with names and songs on it. She said what's that? I said my record list! My mom said, now you can only pick out three records, that's plenty enough. Did you know you get the best deal when you buy one small record, I said how, it's just three songs. My mom said, oh no, you get six songs! How? She said the singer on the record puts one song on one side and a bonus song I'm the other side. Yeah and jumped up and down!! She took my list and walked to the man behind the counter, she said, Rhonda which three of these do you want? I giggled, and said, momma don't you see the star next to my favorite ones? Like she was suppose to know this 🙄. She ask the man where we could find these records. My first, Jackson 5, My second, Donny Osmond, my third, The Staple sisters. I played them records until they couldn't play no more. I taught myself to dance from this exact song. I was in front of the mirror really going at it when my dad walked past my room, a of a sudden I heard him say, Rhonda! Turn down that racket! Quickly turned it down. Then he was in my room hands on his hips and not looking happy at all. He walked over and turned my record player off. He picked up my record and looked at it, and said, where did you get this? I said me and momma got it at the record store. He looked at me, and I felt my stomach drop. 😐... Very strict dad that made me feel nervous and sometimes afraid sometimes, but would never hit me, or hurt me just daddy scary 🫤 He said, what kind of gibberish is this nonsense? I said, it's not the gibberish singing on the record, and neither of the songs are called nonsense. He said are you getting smart mouthed with me? I said very quite, nooo. He said gibberish means that the words that this woman is singing doesn't make sense or have any meaning! 😒 Again very quitely and feeling smaller and smaller with each ticking minute, not looking at my dad but at my record he was holding, I said, it makes sense and I understand what they're singing about. He said, I don't want you listening to this type of music and I better not see you dancing like that anymore either? As he reached for my other two records he said, YOU ARE ONLY 9 YRS, AND TO YOUNG TO LISTEN TO THIS KIND OF MUSIC, AND YOU MIGHT THINK YOU KNOW WHAT THEY'RE SINGING ABOUT BUT YOUR MIND ISN'T OLD ENOUGH YET TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THE REAL MEANING! HE SAID, I GUESS THESE OTHER TWO RECORDS ARE OK, BUT NOT THIS ONE AND WAS HEADING OUT OF MY ROOM RECORD GOING WITH HIM.. I BUSTED DOWN CRYING, MY MOM HEARD AND HURRIED TOWARDS MY ROOM AND ALMOST KNOCKED MY DAD DOWN. INSTANTLY SHE SAID, What's the matter Rhonda, are you hurt somewhere checking my arms , hands and face, I had tears running down my face, she turned to my dad and ask what's going on here Eddie, and where are you going with Rhonda's record? He said, nothing's going on here or anywhere else!! And this record is going in the trash right where it belongs challenging my mom to protest. My mom pit her hand out to him and said, place give me that record, it's Rhonda's and she loves the singer and her family and this record is her favorite! He said, she's to young to have a favorite singer and especially any song she can't even understand. My mom said have you ask Rhonda about the singers, or what what she thinks the song is about? My dad's temperature was rising, and he plainly said, Martha she's not a teenage, she's a child that's 9, not 19! She said turning back towards me, Rhonda tell daddy how old you were when you read all of them red, green, yellow and blue books? Wasn't I 3 when I read them books? My dad said impossible, at only 3 yrs old and chuckled. Laugh all you want because she read the full and entire book of Charlotte's Web, that 5th graders read! My dad said, and I suppose because she told you she read Charlotte's Web you automatically believed it? Come on Martha, now I could see my mom's face turning red and knew daddy better not make mommy mad, or she wouldn't tallk to him for a long time. My mom said very calmly no Rhonda's teacher sent a note home with her, she asked if I could come to the school as soon as I would have time to, the next day I went directly to Rhonda's room worried and wondering if Rhonda was having learning problems with a few courses. My dad rolled his eyes and I could tell he was holding back a huge laugh that was getting ready to come out, my mom looked at him like, do you think this is funny, and making Rhonda cry is a laughing matter? She said if you were more interested in Rhonda's school activities I wouldn't need to tell you anything smarty pants! That done it, because my busted out laughing so hard he just couldn't hold it back anymore, at the same time, he instantly reached for my mom and pulled her to him, within seconds they were both laughing uncontrollably...I just stood there looking at them both, so I snuck over while they were having their good laugh, and pinched my record very softly and slowly, my dad said what do you think you're doing? My mom said, let's make this quick and easy so my grown Rhonda will get her comment done before she gets kicked off of one of her music reactors channel!!😂 The record your holding is a father and his daughter that sing together, they happened to be more than good and now all have signed a record deal, There music is more than good Eddie, it's unbelievably excellent!! Stop judging other types of music just because you only listen to Country & Western music. Please give Rhonda her record back, and what the teacher wanted to discuss was if I knew that Rhonda was a gifted reader and writer. Vi told her that I was shocked one day in my doctor's waiting room and Rhonda was running around with one of her little books, doing her best to get someone's, anyone's attention. I finally told Rhonda to leave people alone because they didn't feel good. I told her to come over to me and sit quitely. I seen that little onrey little look in her squinting gleaming eyes. I said, come now! She walked slowly towards me trying to act sad, when all of a sudden she climbed up on top of this bigger table in the middle of the waiting room stood there looking around and when she saw everyone looking at her she opened her little book and began reading. One woman with a big smile said, ah, look at that precious baby pretending that she can read, isn't she adorable! A Man said to the lady, she's not pretending she's really reading that book!! The woman scolding the naive man, said don't be ridiculous, that baby probably just begun putting her sentences together. The man said adamantly, I'm telling you right now that, that baby is reading that book word for word because my little boy that's in second grade has just started reading then same books. Jack & Jill and their dog named spot. My goodness are you sure about that? Finally my mom spoke up and said, she's already finished reading them all, she has them all memorized and right now she's just showing off, Rhonda come down off of that table, right this minute!!! 1. 2. and I was down before 3. My mom laughed, and told my dad the teacher wanted to tell me that she's already read Charlotte's Web all the way through, and the teacher asked Rhonda if she wanted to read Charlotte's Web a little bit everyday for her classroom? And that's what she doing. Plus she's our highest reader ever and we want to know if you would like to sign a couple papers so we can put her in the excelling reading class. What do you think of that Eddie? My dad looked a little embarrassed, and said, I think it's more than a little terrific, I think I need to pay more attention to Rhonda's accomplishments. My dad handed my record back to me, and said, keep it down music other than County music making me a nervous wreck!! We all laughed and hugged. Thank you daddy for listening to mommy and believing in her.
