One of the greatest jams ever! No one greater than the glorious Ms Mavis Staples! ❤❤❤

Mavis Staple has so much soul in her voice that you can't describe it. What a powerful song that takes you right to Church.

Papa Joe Staples get more with fewer notes on a guitar than most musicians could ever do. He had a style all his own

Actually, Eddie Hinton played the solo, not Pops.

Mavis Staples is a American treasure. I was a little kid but I remember hearing this song and knowing then that there was something special about it. I've loved this song since the first time I heard it.

A great childhood song! I can remember when I first heard "I'll take You There" and my dad yelled out the window to "Stop whistling that damn song!" How about "Every Day People" by Sly and the Family Stone?

Mavis Staples is a national treasure! "Respect Yourself" by The Staples Singers seems an obvious follow up. Also check out clips of their performances at Wattstax and Summer of Soul. And check out Johnnie Taylor & Mavis Staples "That's The Way Love Is". When you're ready for more heavy soul funk superdeliciousness, check out some of these classics -- Betty Harris "There's a Break in the Road", Jean Knight "Do Me", Clarence Wheeler & The Enforcers "Right On", and Aretha Franklin "Rock Steady".

The Staple Singers were a gospel singing family that would make a very successful transition to mainstream music.

Mavis is STILL making music- she just did a duet recently with Hozier called Nina Cried Power, which is tremendous. Respect Yourself is definitely the song to follow this one.

I loved hearing your thoughts about music, it reminded me of the time listening to various artists with my husband, much enjoyment. I called him my personal DJ, he expounded on the history a bit, the personalities, and always the conversation connected to other artists' work. He played them on vinyl but also loved his 8 track players.

LOVE that you are taking a dip into the magic of the bluesy Staples Singers. :) They were BIG back in the day. Traveled with The Rev. Martin Luther King and often opened his appearances. "Respect Yourself" is a must listen. Maybe you will want to hear something from Mavis Staples solo career. "Gonna Change My Way of Thinking" duet with Bob Dylan is cool. A kind of funky gospel blues. It has a section of them conversing a bit of shtick. They were once pretty close. I saw her perform in a classy little venue in Oakland. Awesome live! and she had a great guitar player but maybe not as great as the revered "Pops" Staples. He had an unmistakable style and he wrote much of their songs and led them in their protest work. Cheers!

Like you said " it's something deeper". Evil wants to divide and conquer. Most good people want to just live their lives without hurting others. That's why we must stick together as a whole for good will for all. You should hear some of Mavis Staples solo work I recommend "God Is Not Sleeping" :)

Her voice and that baseline are as good as it gets. The first song I ever heard that implied that those in power (smiling faces) are lying to ALL of us.

Would you believe that except for the horns, this was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Al. with the Swampers @ Muscle Shoals Sound. White country boys that played on dozens of huge hit records with dozens of major artists including Aretha, Bob Seger, The Rolling Stones, Traffic, Jimmy Cliff, Paul Simon, etc. The list goes on and on. Check out the movie Muscle Shoals on RU-vid or on DVD. Look it up.

Music doesn't get any better than that. I have always loved that song. A powerful message. And not that many actual lyrics. But you don't need them when you can sing/perform with that kind of soul. Pretty good comparison to James Brown. He can pull a song off with minimum lyrics, as good as anyone.

Are you familiar with the music that came out of Muscle Shoals, AL? You've reviewed dozens of them on the channel, but I'm not sure if you knew so many have that in common. I encourage you to follow the rabbit hole into songs and bands that recorded at Muscle Shoals, including the Rolling Stones (Wild Horses and Brown Sugar), Cher, Paul Simon, Percy Sledge (When a Man, Percy was a local too!), Staples, Traffic, Black Keys, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bob Seger, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Picket with and without Duane Allman, Etta James, and many more. "I'll take you there" has been described by Rolling Stone magazine as "the epitome of the Muscle Shoals sound." Recorded with the house band at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, and featuring many other Shoals locals. (the Shoals consists of the towns of Sheffield, Muscle Shoals, and Florence in Alabama, separated by the Tennessee River.) I suggest the Osmonds - One Bad Apple or Bobbie Gentry - Fancy, both produced by legendary Rick Hall, as are many of the songs you've reviewed on this channel.
