Sort of my first time. I've listened to the Smashing Pumpkins cover of Landslide a ton. But I didn't know Fleetwood Mac actually ROCKED this hard. Lindsey Birmingham's guitar playing is absolutely beautiful and I have to listen to it more. Thank you for hanging out for my first time reaction to Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way.

Not only did Stevie and Lindsey break up during the making of this album, but John and Christine McVie also broke up around the same time. However, they all knew they were magic as a band so they agreed to continue as a band even though they had all gone through breakups with each other. They also agreed to do solo stuff and then come back together as a band frequently because they were too good as a band to break up. They did this for many years. Fleetwood Mac was just one of the greatest bands of all time. Their album Rumours was the best selling album until it was dethroned by Michael Jackson's Thriller!!!

The 'Rumours' album from 1976 was and still is one of the greatest rock albums ever made. Not a single bad track on it, and when you consider it was made at a time when the romantic personal relationships within the band were breaking up, it's even more remarkable.

They were a couple for roughly 8 years, the same amount of time that Chris and John had been married. At the time of this concert, they had been broken up more than twice as long as they'd been together, but you could tell that every time they were in a room together, it opened up old wounds. I think Lindsey resented Stevie's solo success and Stevie resented the fact that he only let her have two or three songs per album even though she was writing more that Lindsey and Christine combined.

Sebs, what you need to remember when you listen to performances prior to say 1980 is how important live shows were. Whatever was recorded was then played on the radio to promote sales of the albums upcoming concerts. When we went to concerts, we EXPECTED to hear EXACTLY what we paid for. Performers couldn’t hide behind synths added in post-recording. I will say we were blessed with an abundance of extremely talented artists, many of whom still rock concert halls. I will admit to being addicted to watching you & your dear wife, Allie, experience the music that colors my life. 🇺🇸💙

That is a 1979 Rick Turner Model 1-C-LB guitar. Which is designed to give the tone of an acoustic but packs some serious electronics. The only other performer I've ever seen play one is John Mayer. It has a unique sound for sure & it will cost you. A new one will set you back 7 to 9k & the older ones many times that much. Early on Lindsey played Fenders & Stratocasters but once he got the Turner it became his on stage go to guitar. I've never heard the Pumpkins cover of Landslide but I'd strongly recommend that you watch the original.

Rick's son here to say that Dad made guitars for so many people, it's unbelievable. Mom worked for the Airplane, Grateful Dead, and Doobie Brothers. Crosby was a friend of Dad's. Santana lived with my Aunt. Imagine the people that came to the house back in the day and what their input meant to his luthiery. Get your hands on one of these Model 1's, Sebs. Incredible instrument!

This song is from the concert video "The Dance". The whole thing is epic. If you want to see Lindsey go off the rails on a guitar solo, watch I'm So Afraid. It's amazing. Also, Silver Springs from that show is breathtaking. The dynamic between Lindsey and Stevie during that performance is beyond emotional. The guitar is a Rick Turner Model 1. It has this ability to sound acoustic at low volumes, but can scream when turned up. Turner developed the guitar specifically for Buckingham in the late 1970s, and its become Lindsey's main instrument since.

Lindsey is my favorite guitarist of all time, and it's hard to choose because there are so many phenomenal players, but he is most known for his finger plucking making it sound like there's more than one guitar playing. Lindsey plays a Rick Turner Model 1-C-LB guitar, which is a semi-hollow-body electric guitar that's designed to give a very acoustic sound. One of the unusual things about it is that the pick-up can be rotated, which changes the relationship with the strings and changes the sound. Lindsey is an unreal guitarist - all finger-plucked and he uses a combination guitar and banjo style of picking. His playing is so complex that they have to have 2 guitarists to replace him if he's unable to tour. He sometimes will play a 12-string guitar as well, again finger-plucked and played kind of banjo style. The only other guitarist that I've ever heard that can play in this style is Roger McGuinn of The Byrds (such as on the intro to Turn, Turn, Turn) from the 60s.

From the same concert, do Big Love or I’m So Afraid for some major league finger plucking by Lindsey. He can play 2 and sometimes 3 parts at the same time-you’d swear there are three guitarists playing, and it’s just him. Oh yeah, and he sings while doing this. Completely self-taught, doesn’t read music. A major major talent.

When Bob Welch left the Fleetwood Mac they were looking for a replacement. Mick Fleetwwod was also checking out new recording studios. At one the engineer played Mick a demo of a duo they had recorded called Buckingham - Nicks. Mick was blown away by the guitar playing and also the "sound" of the duet. Buckingham was contacted & offered the job but he insisted it was a "package deal" with his partner Stevie Nicks and both were hired to complete the "new sound" the band was looking for. You should react to the song "Frozen Love" by Buckingham - Nicks that got the duo the job wwith Fleetwood Mac.

Stevie and Lindsay are singing. Christie is singing also. She also has a really good voice. Go down this rabbit hole. You won't be disappointed.

This video I believe (could be wrong) was filmed during Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" tour, and about 20 years AFTER Lindsey wrote Go Your Own Way about Stevie, and then she wrote Silver Springs about him.

The full breakup is 2 songs. She wrote Silver Springs about Lindsey. He wrote Go Your Own Way for obvious reasons. Find this live version of Silver Springs and watch how she sings it to him. A mix of angst and anger. It is wild to watch!

Definitely get some of Stevie's live performances - she's incredible when she's out front. Fleetwood Mac was something of a Top 40 group early on, and as they progressed they became more "performative" and more personal with several songs specifically coming from their domestic trials and tribulations. If you heard the original version of this one, it was definitely Top 40 when it was released, but as they matured as a group they added personal elements that really elevated it from a pop radio hit to a performance.

One of the best live albums ever (IMO) is Fleetwood Mac Live album from 1980. All 4 album sides are phenomenal. I still listen to it regularly. This song is done on that album as well as Landslide and many other great songs. Check out "Oh Well" from that album some time it includes the lyric "Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer you want me to". The power and drive in that song are awesome!!!

If you like the finger picking guitar, definitely check out "The Chain" from the same album

Only bad thing about this is the sound quality (presumably of the recording). For more of Lindsey Buckingham's guitar playing I can only second another commenter's suggestion of Big Love.

You want the most emotionally charged performance? Try seeing their 1982 performance of The Chain. Pure vocal violence live on stage between Stevie and Lindsey. That's another of his breakup songs. You can just imagine him bringing these songs in to the band to start recording and expecting Stevie to sing along: "Damn your love, damn your lies."

Fleetwood Mac, "The Dance" tour from the 90's...... They were at the peak of their ability.....! A fantastic live concert. If you wanna see them at their best, choose any song performed on this tour. Great performances by all of them.!
