"I don't feel like I'm attacking the road, I'm just kinda chilling on it. If that makes sense." That's the exact point of a cruiser.

calm down dude, cruisers aren't built for performance. Don't wind it out so much, and don't worry about shifting quickly. Your Yamaha wants to be thrashed on, it wants to run above 10k rpm and be shifted clutchlessly. A shadow redlines at like 6000 and is a lot happier under 4, and even a perfect clutchless shift is bad for it. Just take it easy, be smooth. let the engine help you brake. As for turns, you don't wan't to hang off of it like some do with a sport bike - different seat position gives it a different balance. Keep your body in line with the frame and give it enough gas to maintain speed, and it'll lean further than you think. It'll drag the footpegs and still stick, as long as you're not trying to outrun your front wheel. Sport bikes are all about quick, flicky, aggressive riding and cruisers are about being smooth and deliberate. It would be scary trying to ride one like a sport bike, because they're not designed to be ridden that way.

When I got my cruiser I thought I had trashed the engine because it sputter 12:24 to figure out I was bouncing off the rev limiter. The engine revved less than my wife's Mitsubushi Mirage. It felt like a tractor. I have been riding for decades, but it took me a ridiculously long time to get used to the low power, long wheel base, lousey brakes, and stupid weight. Then one day I was chugging down a two lane back road through a corn field, and I got it. A cruiser is different. It takes a different attitude, a different set of skills, a different pace. Everyone should own one. But if you really want to learn how to ride well, one needs to ride a lighter, more multipurpose bike. Cruisers do one thing, and do it pretty well. My Vulcan is great for chugging along an interstate at 75 with my wife on the back, but dirt back roads? Carving curves? Parking on sidewalk? Forget about it. Not happening. I have my Vulcan. I have a Ninja. I have a 250 dual purpose bike. I even have my daughters old scooter. If my wife and I are going for a long (100 mile + ) I'll take the Vulcan. If its just me I'll probably grab something easier to push out of the garage.

You're shifting like you're still on a crotch rocket. You need to relax when riding a cruiser. That's what they are all about. You can actually go somewhere on a cruiser, not just carve up the pavement, and have a great time getting there. Some day, when you're older and wiser, you'll understand. Ride smart and stay safe!

Coming from a SV650S, it took me a little bit to acclimate to the Shadow, but once I did, it was just a pussy cat for me. I was actually really surprised by how readily the Shadow leans into a turn. It can't hit the lean angles of the SV, but it is more than happy to tip over when you counter-steer. I was really (pleasantly) surprised by how much I enjoyed a more laid-back ride.

how come all young kids default to a sport bike? My first bike was a 750 cruiser and loved it. Is it because they are cheaper, or lighter, what is it? If you are not racing on a track, why a sport bike, instead of a classic motorcycle?
@robertherrick6703
@robertherrick6703 4 года назад
Because they're young. Most young people don't care about old classic stuff unless they had parents, older siblings, or other family members who were into it. There are always exceptions.
@craigbannister7826

They don't, I'm young And have no interest in a crotch rocket.
@edwardkeeter762
@edwardkeeter762 Месяц назад
It's the same reason that young kids want the absolute most 'roided up Porsche 911 or Stingray that money can buy, and older folks would much rather haven an old air-cooled 911 or 65 Stingray that are both DRIPPING with style. Young men think that speed = getting girls. Older men realize that (a) women don't care in the slightest about what you drive or how fast it is, and (b) what they do appreciate, however, is style.

The shadow 750 was my starter bike... It's literally the easiest cruiser to ride, super easy to handle, super low power, awesome brakes, super reliable, and i CANT Believe this guy is clutch-less shifting and not shifting hard enough to go past neutral. His review of a harley would be "this thing has too much torque for me, it's too comfortable for me, i can't shift it without using more than a lb of force"

@ChiefJay
@ChiefJay 8 лет назад
It's all just about what you're used to. It really handled its' weight well. I know it's fairly light for a cruiser but its definitely heavier than most of the bikes I ride! What threw me off was the feet forward seating position combined with how different the handling is compared to my enduro and my sportbike.

I ride a 1997 VLX 600 Shadow. They do not handle anything like your sport bike. That bike you rode can hit 100. Mine has only 4 gears, I can hit 75 in third, but that's pushing it. It will cruise at 75 in 4th with ease. Stopping is less about breaks than down shifting and breaking together. At least for me. You might be surprised at how far it will lean over before you clip the pegs. And, your comment about attacking the road, that's not what a cruiser is about. Cruisers are for cruising, not racing and attacking the road. Just remember, a person who rides purely cruisers may find a crotch rocket like yours pretty scary, too.

I own a Shadow 750 Aero and a Suzuki SV650S. I absolutely love riding each of them...I don't have a favorite. It's two wildly different experiences. The SV is quick, torquey, and flickable...a non-hard-core adrenaline rush. The riding position inspires confidence when being more aggressive. The Shadow is a deceptively nimble laid back riding experience. The riding position encourages you to chill out and enjoy the scenery. Plenty adequate torque and power for responsible, real-world riding with a nice torque bump between 20 and 50MPH, exactly where you want it. Brand new, they cost almost the exact same. Both are new rider friendly but they'll still satisfy veteran riders as well. My point is, I don't expect the Shadow to ride like a SV or visa-versa. It's like buying a Harley Road King and a really good dirt bike. Different bikes for different missions. The OP is judging a cruiser based on sportbike metrics. He's missing the point entirely.

@masterwu1162
@masterwu1162 7 лет назад
You really should give cruisers another crack before you dismiss them the 750 shadow is a very good bike and takes a different riding style than what you are used to. It is no sports bike that's for sure but it has different strengths of its own like a relaxed riding position and a super cool look cruisers can get very addictive if you let them. The main problem you seem to be facing is you have a preconceived idea of how a bike should ride and that has been reinforced by the sport bike models you have owned. If you had started riding a cruiser first you would think sport bikes are weird and would probably give them a bad review. All I am saying is relax throw your leg over another cruiser and go for a relaxed country ride then you might have a different view. I felt the same way on my first cruiser ride like it was an alien experience because I had preconceived ideas on how bikes should ride from my previous experience. But now I absolutely love them and I am glad I did not dismiss cruisers from my first experience's with the genre.
@edwardkeeter762

Here's my analogy: Miller Lite and Guiness Stout are both beers. I'd argue that they're both very good beers. But If I hand you a Guiness when you're expecting a Miller, WOW will you be disappointed (and visa-versa). the OP needs to lose his expectations and climb on the Shadow to experience it for what it IS.

I respect your opinion and your video, this is the first video I seen by you. The reason I bumped into it is because I am buying a 2002 Honda vxl and I wanted to see someone riding it. Only thing I can say is you gave me the impression U wanted to jump on it and it feel like a sports bike, because that’s what you’re used to. I’ve never rode either, looking forward to it. I’ve seen plenty sports bikes and cruisers on the marketplace and the reason why I chose the shadow is because the particular one I am getting has only 7000 miles. You're not going to just fling this bike around at 498 lbs. I'm 60 years old and this is my third bike, after a '76 Kawasaki KH250, and a '79 Yamaha XS Eleven Special. For my money, this is the best-looking, and best riding bike of the three by far. Not scary at all. But then again, I don't "attack the road" as he says in the video. I dont ride. But I'm planning on getting my first motorcycle soon. A cruiser for sure. Being I'm 6'3" and 260 i dont think I'll be comfortable on a sport bike. Plus I just love the way they look and sound. Anyone out there from the school of thought that I should get a bike I can grow into for the years to come? Or should I just get a used bike that is made for beginners?

Before buying a cruiser spend a few hours driving a car without a back rest. Or with the back rest moved all the way down so it can't be leaned on. 30 minutes in you'll start to slouch. If you can do that a few hours & call it comfortable you might like a cruiser. Knowing this would have saved me a lot of money.

I"m personally a lover of sport bikes and Cruiser. I have a 1700 Triumph Thunderbird and a Suzuki Hayabusa 2nd generation. love them for different reasons and ride each depending on my mood and intentions. I think when it coems to Cruisers you really need to get a bigger one to experience that real cruiser torque. When you get used to riding cruisers you get totally comfortable with scraping peg in the corners and just changing your riding style to suit the bike.

braking is totally different on a cruiser, 60% front 40% back AS OPPOSED TO 90/10 SPORT BIKE!

Oh my god that poor shadow /-\ don't shift it like a sport bike it makes me sad.... Cruisers are exactly what they are named for, CRUISING! They're heavy, they're built for endurance, not speed. Obviously the brakes are going to be a lot slower due to the extra couple hundred pounds. Treat it the road with respect, treat the machine with respect. You can manhandle a sport bike all you want, you try that with a cruiser and you'll get fucked up.. I ride a cruiser and the brakes take a while to get used to

If there are 2 lanes in the same direction yes . Such as a boulevard or interstate. If it's a 2 lane highway ( single lane one direction ) then no .

You sit ON a standard or sport bike. You sit IN a cruiser. On a standard or sport bike you thinking about handling and power. On a cruiser you chill and enjoy the ride and being a rider.

Totally agree apart from specialised riding, trials,motorcross ect you should be able to hop on any road bike . Brakes? Try the bikes i started on in the 60s single leading shoe lots of hauling to stop or multiple leading shoe on sports bikes that would lock up instantly at anything under 40

oh man! 2003 Shadow Spirit! the exact same colour and year of the shadow I had in Florida! Man does that bring back some memories of riding it! I was exactly like you! so weird jumping on a cruiser from riding sport bikes for ages. But hey they are easy to ride! it's just getting used to the feet being in front of you, key is on the side and lower positioning, cornering etc etc. But it has two wheels a motor and gets you to point B from A. -ThirteenDR

Chief Jay exactly! back here in Australia I had no intention of owing a cruiser as I have access to like 4 mountains on the weekend to hit up. However when I was in orlando, it was all just dead straight roads. So I opted for a cruiser. But hey a bike is a bike!

Not because we are cruiser bike that we love that bike but because we got to start with that. Note: brakes for cruiser are not as efficient as the sport’s one because it does not need to be. You don’t turn a cruiser like sport’s, the tire’s gum are not as soft. Cruiser are made to enjoy riding.
@MaxHeadRush

are you guys taught to drift upto traffic lights rather than engine braking?
@ChiefJay
@ChiefJay 7 лет назад
In MSF, yes. Taught to clutch in and use just the brakes. I use a combination of both engine and wheel braking when I ride my bikes, didn't really do it on the Shadow though. No idea why.
@MaxHeadRush
@MaxHeadRush 7 лет назад
I use downshift. So much more control through corners and coming to a stop. I hardly use the breaks. I imagine you do the same going round corners? It just seems like you lose connection with the bike if you drift like that.

This rider is like, like not liking it for some reason like he don't know where he is, like lost. Like he's a squid. "It's not like a bad motorcycle, I'm just like chillin' on it, like". He never used his turn signals once so he'll like be in an accident sooner or later (like sooner)

My Vulcan and my R6 are polar opposites to ride. I actually feel more stable on the sportbike than the cruiser. I believe the sportbike is more streamline and cuts through the wind better. The cruiser,especially a bobber, isn't aerodynamic for squat.

+Spectre223 Depending on what you consider motorway speeds, it'll handle it alright. Short jaunts are fine, the bike is a bit underpowered for say, an all day 80mph highway trip.

So long as it'll cruise all day at 70, with a bit more if I need to get out of trouble. Another option is the Honda Magna, 'cus the V4 engine and 76hp should be better
