Yes Devin really is a performer. If you are looking for fun his 'Why" is a must if you are looking for the limits of his scream his live "Deadhead" is a must. ""Grace" is like going to metal church. The choices are limitless

Was able to see him 3 times including just him doing an acoustic set. After that show my gf and I went around the back of the building and caught Devy loading his own gear. When he was done, he gave us his undivided attention for about 15 minutes and signed his book for me. He even drew a picture in it of Ziltoid and signed it again. People say don't meet your idols, Devy breaks that rule. It must be a Canadian thing.

What really blows me away is Devins ability to transition from Fry screams, to beautiful cleans. He is such an amazing performer, musician what have you! He has really mastered his own vocal range, and the limits of his voice. That is not an easy thing to do, and takes a lot of practice trial and error.

Glad you enjoyed Devi! He is an incredible person, one of the nicest and truthful people around - I've seen him live too many times, and every time I leave the show happier than I arrived. Can't sing his praise enough. He also has an ocean of music, very vast and different and not just metal - Casualties of Cool is a very relaxed album. I can't leave without suggesting my favourite song, Deadhead (specifically Royal Albert Hall is my favourite), but he's got a lot of great songs. I don't see a ton of reactions to a few other songs of his from that concert: Funeral, Bastard or Death of Music. Heck, for something rather different the Ziltoid album is a combo of great metal music and a hilarious concept. actually, he's done a few concerts on RU-vid during the lock down that are also great fun to watch. He's hooked up an xbox controller so he can switch between cameras, as well as a few other fun at home tricks! I think there's even a clip of him doing a song from a musical, and of course the song Why, which is pretty close to a Disney musical

Devy began his career right out of high school as the vocalist for Steve Vai's band. It didn't take long before he grew disillusioned with the music industry though. So he quit his job, moved back home to Canada, and founded a new band that would be as brutal, angry and non-commercial as he could make it. He called his new band Strapping Young Lad. But his anger eventually got the best of him. He began drinking heavily, abusing psychotropics and using copious amounts of drugs. It messed with his head to the point where he finally had a breakdown and quit the band for fear he would kill himself. Once again he moved back home, started a family, got his act together and focused on a new kind of music that would be experimental, but positive and affirming. Hence was born the Devin Townsend Project. Some time later he shortened it to just Devin Townsend. He produces, writes and records all the music himself with the assistance of guest musicians whom he himself hires. Today he is one of the kindest and most respected artists in the industry.

A live performance that shows off his stage presence is pretty much every live performance he has given. There are so many amazing performances depending on what kind of experience you want to have. Some of his most moving performances for me are when he does an acoustic performance. Most of his songs are made to be full of vocal harmonies, guitars and synthesisers, so hearing him adapt a song to purely acoustic is really beautiful. For me, my recommendation is a tie between his acoustic performance of Funeral for CBC Music and his acoustic performance of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables live in Auckland, New Zealand. For non-acoustic, it has to be the triple of Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music at the Royal Albert Hall. This version of Funeral is much closer to the original, but I really prefer the acousic version for its impact.
@jaredmulconry

Devin's vocal abilities are largely self-taught. Unfortunately, that means that most of what he's able to do is a result of force-of-will. He's spoken often about how his technique is to hammer his voice until it's shot, then take a break before going again. I would love to see him refine his technique and learn how to take better care of his voice, but I don't think he could do it any other way now. Devin is releasing a double album in a few months time that is going to be super strange (according to him). Keep an eye out for that.

You can literally pick just about any random song from any Devin / SYL / CoC album and you will get a ton of views because the Devin fans absolutely devour any Devin reaction content. It's just a joy to watch people experiencing him for the first time or just getting their toes wet with his catalog. You do not have to pick one of the same 5 songs that a billion other reaction channels have done. To explain how he controls his voice and reaches those really high notes in his very own words: "sheer force of f****ing will"

You are absolutely correct on all points about Devon. His vocal prowess is off the scale, and unique. He, as you suspected, is also a lovely bloke, and hugely charismatic. Here's a link to an interview with Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice). It is 90 mins long, but well worth watching. Utterly fascinating. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MeYVwu1qEh4.html

If you want another incredible metal singer who does a crazy mix of clean and harsh vocals with elaborate compositions, check out Wintersun's "Time" Sonic Pump Studio session. Wintersun's original drummer is the current Nightwish drummer, and their bassist is the current touring bassist with Nightwish.

The BEST fry scream in music history is performed by Devin Townsend in Deadhead in Royal Albert Hall.

You're a nice person too. I hope you'll keep tunneling down Devin Townsend's hole, I feel each one of his live performances are special and every studio record is magnificent. He does have some interesting interviews too, but if you want to really get into his mind and hear about how he thinks I recommend Devin's podcast series on his own RU-vid channel, there's one for every album. Of course this is a lot at once, if you would only like to hear a bit more music from him, anything you find will probably be grand. One of my favorites of his songs is called Deep Peace.

@@buckfuttler2877 given the tour stories from SYL and the tour manager's phone, I'm sure he wouldn't object... And then there's the first Zimmer's Hole album 'artwork' from behind the cd...

Devi made an intervju with the Elizabeth "The Charismatic Voice" where he talked about his singing so you might wanna check that out if you want to know more about his his vocal technique..... I did not watch the whole thing but at least enough to hear him say that he was coughing blood after a concert.... that does not sound healthy at all
