I am glad that you liked the song, this is the music that I was brought up on!

Free was a short lived band but for those few years it was the best live band around. Just magical.

Paul Rodgers is one of the standards by which other vocalists are measured. Crazy good!

The bassist, Andy Fraser, was 17 years old when this was recorded. Imagine having the confidence at that age to hand fire for over half the song before blending into the mix, just at the optimal point. From memory, I think he wrote this tune and "Wishing Well", which is also excellent.

When you said you didn't need to hear any more of the song, I thought, "Oh boy, wait til you hear that bass...."

Four very young musicians playing simple parts while listening to each other. Beautifully constructed and executed perfectly. I know Bad Company were way bigger in the US but this little band is damn near perfect.

You want some more Free bangers? "Mr Big" has that classic bass line, "Heartbreaker" got that sexy groove.

as usual, you're good taste comes to the front. I agree, this is one of the greatest rock songs ever. Simplicity sincerity and soulfulness was what Carlos Santana said mattered. To me, this song measures up. Thanks again for a great channel and for being yourself.great great things happen.

Absolute belter..always remind me of my friend's band who played a lot of Free and Bad Company. Wishing Well is another belter. Fire and Water is a cracking album and to think they were so so young..all teenagers The group played their first gig on 19 April 1968 at the Nag's Head pub, at the junction of York Road and Plough Road in Battersea, London. They were all teenagers - bass player Fraser was 15 years old, lead guitarist Kossoff was 17, and lead singer Rodgers and drummer Kirke were 18!!. In November the same year they released their first album Tons of Sobs. Amazing. As a teenager in the 80s i remember discovering Free and this tune is certainly a banger

Wikipedia: For a short time, Free were alongside Led Zeppelin as among the highest grossing British acts, though Free's status was not sustained. Lead singer Paul Rodgers: When his friend Jimmy Page started to come around to his house, guitar in hand and Led Zeppelin at an end, the duo's first live pairing was on the US ARMS (Action Research into Multiple Sclerosis) Tour, which had first been mooted by Eric Clapton and, besides Rodgers and Page, would include Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker, Steve Winwood and others.

Ah, this brings back memories of driving to the beach. Windows down singing this song at the top of our lungs on a hot summer day! The 70's were a creative hotbed for music. I think you would also like Slow Ride from Foghat. Cheers 🇨🇦

Lead singer, Paul Rodgers, is a Sagittarius like me (same month and day as me actually). Nothing is more important to our astrological sign than freedom. This song came out in 1970. Astrology was HUGE in the 70s.

The Fire and Water album has some bangers: This, the title track, Mr Big and Heavy Load are all fab. So too is Wishing Well. Of course, Bad Company progressed the sound more but it was missing that Paul Kossoff liquid gold sustain on guitar

This particular version is a re-record. The original had a harder edge but this is still almost identical but more polished. And as for “one other big record” Eh? They had loads over here in the UK. My Brother Jake,Wishing Well,Mr Big,Fire and Water (that one so good that the soul legend Wilson Pickett covered it) and plenty more. Dive headfirst into THIS rabbit hole mate.

Love Free, still have my original vinyl ad the CD in the car. I always thought that this song sounded more like Bad Co. than Free tho. It has the more polished sound of Bad Co. whereas Free was more raw and bluesy. I love Bad Co. because I love Paul Rodgers, but I kinda prefer the rougher edges of Free
