This song wasn't written about a girl, but about the music industry.

Doesn't matter, After a while both Hall and Oates said that it can apply to romance as well...It's like with Ace's "How long", which the great Paul Carrack admitted that most people don't give a rat's ass that it was originally written about the band's bass player secretly recording with a different band, and the majority of people attribute it to a romantic infidelity.

Quoted from Wikipedia"John Oates has stated that while many listeners may assume the lyrics are about a relationship, in reality, the song, "is about the music business. That song is really about not being pushed around by big labels, managers, and agents and being told what to do, and being true to yourself creatively."

Hip Hop Has a habit of sampling great music of the past. When you can't be creative on your own just take from the masters of the past. The number of songs you have said that you have heard as a sample is insane.

@@xmathmanx Well Rhythm and Blues was at some point influenced as well, nothing wrong with being inspired or influenced and creating your own vision of something. However to actually take and sample part of something for 3 to 10 seconds and put it into your creation is not cool. So many amazing creative people have had their work earn other people money. Earn your money not use someone else's work to earn money. I am a street performer and I see people all the time using famous songs to earn money. This is not right, make your own music. Never like cover bands or people that leech of the success of others. I have created all my own routines and scripts and do my best not to copy or use the same things as 90% of the other people who do the same type of entertainment as myself. I want to be known for doing something that no one has seen someone else do. I was inspired and use to use what is known as common patter with my presentation, however learned it is more important what you say and how you react to those you entertain than what is happening. People remember more of what was talked about to remember what happened. have a good day. I do love me some Rhythm and Blues !!!!
