"I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" is a popular song by the American music duo Hall & Oates. It was released in 1981 as the second single from their tenth studio album, "Private Eyes." The song was written by Daryl Hall, John Oates, and Sara Allen.
"I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" became one of Hall & Oates' biggest hits, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also topped the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. The song features a distinctive bassline, catchy chorus, and smooth vocals by Daryl Hall.
The lyrics convey a sense of reluctance or refusal to comply with someone's demands or expectations. The repeated phrase "I can't go for that, no can do" emphasizes the speaker's firm stance. The song's popularity and memorable hooks have made it a staple of Hall & Oates' discography and a classic of 1980s pop music.

This song is actually not about a girl, it was written in a couple of minutes on the fly, as they were leaving a writing session in the studio. The record company had just made a promotional request of them that Darryl Hall thought crossed the line - he was mad and wrote the song as a way of drawing the line.
@CuzKatieSaysSo

Record companies really made it hell for musicians didn't they? Even Ted Nugent's Stranglehold was actually directed at the record company for trying to tell him what to do. I know there's other band who did the same, but they're not coming to mind on the fly.

You fellas need to do a reaction to a song from the web-series, LIve at Daryl's House, where Daryl (no John Oates) hosts various famous artists to perform Hall & Oates classics or the artists' classics. A great place to start would be this song with Daryl and Cee-lo Green. Or, the famous '70s Philly Soul group, The Ojays visiting Daryl's house to do their 1973 hit, *"For The Love of Money".* These performances are available on RU-vid.

@athlonen
@athlonen Год назад
There's a reason this is smooth. Hall and Oates are heavily influenced by the sound of Philly Soul. They loved Motown (Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, etc.) and Memphis Soul (isaac Hayes, Green Onions, etc.), but were a part of the Philly Soul Sound.. McFadden and Whitehead, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendegrass, etc. That is where the bulk of their pre-1980s sound came from. This is part of that. All I will say is this: React to Sara Smile, and if you dare, One on One. The issue with One on One: prepare to have a night with your partner after you do! 😉

Written by Sara Allen, Hall and Oates. The song was sampled by De La Soul, Simply Red, Andersen-Paak, others. The late Michael Jackson told John Oates that he lifted the bassline for the sing Billie Jean. Hall and Oates said there was no copyright violation: they acknowledged that their song inspired the bassline for Billie Jean. Great 👍 songs all through.
