Imagine 'Carry On Wayward Son', 'More Than A Feeling' (Boston), and 'Go Your Own Way' (Fleetwood Mac), all being played on the radio during the same time. Those of us who experienced all this music when it was fresh and new we're blessed beyond words.
Very true! Throw in 'Don't Fear the Reaper' (Blue Oyster Cult), 'New Kid in Town' (Eagles), 'Livin' Thing' (ELO), 'Crazy on You' (Heart), 'Do You Feel Like We Do' (Peter Frampton), 'Fly Like an Eagle' (Steve Miller), 'Night Moves' (Bob Seger), 'Give a Little Bit' (Supertramp), 'Dream On' (Aerosmith), 'Somebody to Love' (Queen) and 'The Boys Are Back in Town' (Thin Lizzy) and you can argue that this may have been the greatest era in rock n' roll history.
Yes, we were! I was 17 when this album dropped. I bought it as an 8 TRACK (hey, it was 1976!) and wore that sucker out!! Because of this record, I bought the other 3 Kansas tapes!! Oh, and the next year (1977) I was in Navy boot camp and Point of No Return was released!!
We, that grew up in the 60's and 70's, couldn't turn around without running into another great song hitting us in the face every day. Either a new one was on the radio or a friend was saying, I just picked up a new album you have to hear this group or song from a deep cut the radio wasn't playing. Just an amazing time. The bands, song writers, and singers just kept coming up with new stuff to listen to. No auto-tune for the singers to rely on either -or even tech improvements for the equipment and recording tricks. So much more today for the musicians to rely on instead of pure talent.
Ah, "back-in-the-dayisms". There were just as many one-offs and dreck back then as there is today. We only claim the stuff that stuck as representative of a generation's music. I remember a lot of b-sides that got played once and never again. I remember entire albums that were purchased for one song. I remember a.m. radio. It wasn't all golden. Times, tastes and perspective change and although older listeners may no longer be the target market for "popular music", it is wildly disingenuous to claim one generation's music is better than the next. Were Bill Haley and the Comets better than Glenn Miller? I question how many people who talk like this have immersed themselves in today's music - lots more than just pop hits out there - or whether they just stopped listening to anything new after the age of 30... Further note: Older people probably don't come here to learn something new about music; they watch to have their personal preferences affirmed by someone else. That ain't progression, people...
You sound pretty silly trying to speak of something you seem to be unable to read or understand. I never said every song that came out during that time was good. Yes, many albums were bought for one song. What does that have to do with my statement. I also never said there was never a good song or artist/group after that time. You tried to read things in that were not actually said. However, they did come further and further apart. It seems now you have to look long and hard to find that kind of talent because many have become reliant on the technology both vocally and instrumentally. Of course, can’t forget the mixing, tracking and the rest to go with it. Many just don’t put the work in any more to become masters of the craft. Notice I said many, not all, so don’t go giving me a list of who you think are.
You don't know how it blesses those of us who were fortunate to grow up with this music, to hear all you "reactors" discover it too. Very unifying indeed. 💖 💥🔥
Man, I KNEW that when you got around to this song that you would go nuts for it, and that your stank face would be prominent, lol. You did not disappoint.
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your reactions. You have so much insight both musically and lyrically and look at art with such depth that it always makes the time watching worthwhile. In addition, on a more subjective note, I find I have a lot in common with your overall taste in music. I used to belt out this song when I was younger, not quite sure I have the vocal range anymore, but I can still play it on the keys! Hats off to your reaction to The Garden yesterday as well. Keep doing what you do. Your opinion is valued.
One of the few songs that is almost universally accepted as a masterpiece no matter what genre of music anyone prefers....this song is accepted by everyone as pure greatness. 🔥 😎✌
The look, with the cover in the background, band shot on left, lyrics on the right, is top notched. Also, I think it's fair to roll a song back, in a reaction vid, as many times as needed. I enjoy your work bruh. It's spicy!
I agree, I think it proves that he's really _listening_ to the material, thinking about it, & what more could we ask of someone reacting to a classic like this? I appreciate the effort he puts into his videos.
One of the best songs and bands ever. Two killer guitar players , a great drummer and singing. And keys and bass too. Love them! Not to mention a violinist too. OMG!
This is a song of truly being awakened-not awoke. Man has to come to grips with his life, and all the choices he's made. In the end, he discovers he's only dust in the wind...
70s had the best most talented bands! If you haven’t listened to Boston, check out “Holly Ann”. Had the pleasure of seeing Kansas in 1982 and they are awesome live!
@Lewis 970 oh there’s no doubt that their debut is the best, but there second was made and produced the same way just a couple of years later, and, like the first album, does not have a bad song on it. “A Man I’ll Never Be” is one of my favorite songs from the band. Either album would make good reactions, in any case.
@Lewis 970 (NIC "Not in character") to be fair, I grew up listening to all Boston albums, my father even has a tattoo on his arm of the guitar spaceship from the first album, so that may explain my rock listening history. Brad Delp was a huge loss to the rock community. And yes, I am happy we have the same musical interests and I wish all point-counterpoint discussions were like this. :) Also: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZtJSq5TsQU4.html Yeah, they still rocked hard, even in '94. I saw them live that year as my first concert experience. (I am 34 IRL) Although it is a different singer, wow, what a song.
@@RareHarmony ok I’m gonna jump in... I absolutely loved the Third Stage album...it came out at the perfect time and had so many messages I needed in my life at the time... I’m probably a little younger than y’all I was only familiar with the radio hits if the first two. I mentioned The Man I’ll Never Be... great song but I hadn’t heard it before I fell in love with To be a Man. “We can be blind but a man tries to see, it takes tenderness for a man to be what he can be.”
I love the fact is it when you react and breakdown an artist you actually listen to each instrument and try to guess what kind of effects are being used and I just want to let you know did as a music fan and as a fan of musicians and musicianship thank you sir
I have a photograph of Steve Walsh doing a handstand on his keyboards while playing live in '81. Yes, you could take a 35mm SLR camera with a telephoto lens into a concert back then ($9.00, I have the stub!).
And by "Stub", he ain't talkin about his Pecker....................He's talking about his Ticket Stub! Ahh,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The good ol' days of saving your Ticket Stub!
Kansas musical geniuses and composers , they're beloved worldwide they filled stadiums all over the world. Love your reaction, new subscriber here, thank you !Kerry Livgren blonde haired guitarist wrote music and lyrics to Wayward Son, Steve Walsh lead singer, keyboards, congas.
The Craziest Thing about this song...they just finished recording a whole album....the guitar player said...I have another one, if you wanna hear it....and.it WAS THIS!
Funny that you referenced Icarus, they have a song titled "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)" that you should do a reaction to, which also showcases their masterful musicianship and vocals. Another song I think you'll enjoy is "Child of Innocence".
Different albums. Carry On is the 1st track on the 1976 masterpiece Leftoverture. The Pinnacle, an incredible prog gem, is the last track on their 3rd album, Masque.
If I'm not Mistaken, Kansas needed one more song to finish the album and they came up with this Masterpiece !As is the whole album(A Masterpiece). It was the first song on the L.P. What a way to kick off the album.
It was Kerry Livgren (lead guitar, piano, and synth) who wrote pretty much all the songs on Leftoverture. The band was finished with the album & packing up when Kerry walked into the studio w/ a song he had written the night before (music & lyrics). That song was "Carry on Wayward Son" which wound up being the lead-off track & took Kansas to stardom. What an amazing musician Kerry is!!
This is a true work of art… an absolute MASTERPIECE of music. One of the greatest songs ever! From lyrics to arrangement and pure musicianship, it doesn’t get better than this
Jay, It's interesting that you mentioned Icarus in your analysis. My Favorite song from Kansas is called 'Icarus: Born on Wings of Steel' - which you should definitely check out.
One of my favourite bands. Kansas are brilliant....the prog boys from the south. Kerry Livgren, their main songwriter is a genius. Story goes that they needed a hit, they had almost completed the Leftoverture album but the record company was worried there was not a 'radio friendly' hit. Kerry said "I came up with this last night'.....and the rest is history. One of their biggest hits was born in a day. This guy could come up with complex songs and arrangements in a heartbeat.....a brilliant musical talent.
Thirteen years old, 1976, all I listen to was top 40 pop radio. Then, Kansas "Leftoverture" and Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" changed my life forever. And then, BOC.
Really?, Really?, Amazing Shit! Right? So Glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s😁✌️ The look on his face before he just looked at the camera and said Really? Really? Surely means that he did See and Feel what Kansas was laying down. Enlightenment is a Wonderful thing. Powerful. Life Changing Sustenance.👍
This was a late add on to the album. Kerry Livgren came in one of the last days of recording and asked if they would like to include this song that he wrote the night before. Once he played it the rest of the band asked him where he had been hiding this. There are so many "hooks" in this song. An incredible achievement by an extremely talented song writer made complete by an equally talented band. A true piece of Americana.
It’s been a while since I listened to this song. Your reaction reminded me of exactly how AMAZING this song is. Lyrics, vocals and instruments! (My favorite part is the piano and vocals on the “Once I rose above the noise and confusion...” section.) Thanks for another great reaction!! 😎
If I've heard this song once I've heard it 500 times. This children is what real music is all about and we were blessed with bucket loads of this level of music....
My first time watching one of your reactions Jay Rah. I've been hanging with Jamel for several months. Aside from your intro I really enjoyed your style.
Steve Walsh-lead vocals/organ, Robbie Steinhart-back up vocals/violin, Rich Williams-Guitar, Dave Hope-Bass Guitar, Kerry Livgren-guitar/synchs, & Phil Ehart -Drums. This band jams & sounds even better live! They opened up for Queen & Freddie Mercury/lead vocalist was actuly blown away by their performance.. Progressive Rock from the heartland!
I have said it before and I will say it again... the 1970s AM and FM radio airwaves were a veritable CORNUCOPIA of musical styles and genres and some great bands that refused to be pigeonholed! I am 56 years old and I am truly enjoying watching younger people digging these tunes that BLEW me away the first time I heard them.. God Bless you brother!
Kerry Livgren wrote this overnight the night before they were supposed to tear down in the studio. “We were packing up our stuff when Kerry walked in with his last-minute addition,” drummer Phil Ehart remembers. “For such a very, very special song, it barely made the record.” “Back then I wrote maybe seventy per cent of each album, with [vocalist] Steve Walsh supplying the rest. And on the very first day of rehearsals, Steve came to me and said that he had nothing - not a single song,” Livgren recalls with disbelief and a chuckle. “I don’t relish that kind of pressure, but with hindsight it really brought out the best in me.” Each night, Livgren would write a song and the following morning rehearse it at the vacant store in a strip mall in Topeka used by the band and their producer Jeff Glixman.
OMG! You did a "Mr RockAndRoll" move! You need the door, though. Glad you liked this -- I listened to this on an 8-Track player (may need to ask your grandma what that is) in my first car until the tape broke in 1977. Ah, Memories... ••• Thanks! Peace! (-:
I enjoy watching you enjoy songs I have known all my life it is like I get to hear them for the first time again and I love your facial expressions. Ty for the memories. Have an amazing day
One of my good friends went to school with this band, knew them all personally, asked him to bring his sax over to see if it would be a fit for a song they were working on...in the garage, after school...wow...Rock On!
I truly enjoy your reactions, thank you! You are an old soul which to me, is a tremendous complement. There is a documentary on Kansas which is extremely interesting. Of course they are a Midwestern band, basically with no chance of being discovered. Somehow, Don Kirshner gets word of them and signs them for pennies on the dollar. He sticks with them through a couple of albums While he keeps pushing them to write the “hit”. They had one more song to add for this particular album, leftoverture, and Kerry Livgren went home and wrote carry-on my way word son that night. The rest of course is history. Finally, Steve Walsh’s Voice is one of the best in rock ever, in my opinion. Thanks again! God bless!
One of the best songs of ALL TIME! Written by the guitarist Kerry Livgren who is a born again CHRISTIAN! He became a Christian a few years after this song and Dust in the wind! Awesome!
All of this music was such a special time for us. When most people who don't know rock think of rock they picture metal. Not all of the sub genres of rock.
This reaction was fire. The music pulled you in to the point you felt the need to understand the lyrics and found them to be powerful. That is the work of true musicians.
So happy top be a part of your reaction family! This one was really good! Kansas is a great band. If you have not heard "Fight Fire With Fire" from them, I recommend it.
By far the best reaction to this classic masterpiece by Kansas. Love your channel and your knowledgeable input to these reactions. Very refreshing to see one who hasn't experienced these classic tunes yet I grew up with to totally digging these true gems. My reaction was like yours when I first heard these classics. Reliving it again with a smile to your new found discovery! 😁I'm 56 years old and loved all of the music that I was lucky enough to experience during my youth till now. Still jamming them all! Love it all!! We were spoiled by such talented artist who practiced their craft to the T!! Great music from every genre. It was non stop! Enjoy your musical journey Jay Rah! I'm along for the ride, again!! Keep rocking! Peace brother! 🎸🎼🎙🎤👍👊✌ Love the sinking in the seat while hitting this jam! Lol Know the feeling!
First rock album I ever bought. Kansas is the best Christian rock band of all-time! One of the best bands all-time regardless of faith or genre! They have many more great songs!
I really liked how much you enjoyed such a great band. Kansas is always on my playlist along with CCR, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. thank you sir for a great review.
Kansas was magic and human form they could have been the ones that wrote the songs could have been a philosophers back in the day the way they wrote so beautiful I like the way you think ✌️ keep shining your beautiful light set the world on fire.
It’s such an anthem. Telling you to keep going, keep searching. I always got a smile watching “Supernatural” I love the new set up! Keep up the great work!
I saw this version of Kansas.. Last show of Audion Visions.... To say it was amazing would be an understatement.... Almost 40 yrs later and I still remember it.. Steve Walsh doing handstands on his keyboard... Written by Kerry Livgren.
Man the bands were just so darn good from when I was young! The lyrics are insanely good and the instrumentals were tight. The golden age was the 60’s to 70’s for sure with some really great bands.
