Just for pure enjoyment, listen to the original 1967 version and then listen again to this one. Gary's voice was always soulful but over the decades it's gained such depth. This was one of the anthemic songs of the sixties - it takes me straight back there every time I hear it - any of its versions. It puts much of today's auto-tuned 'music' to shame.

I believe Gary Brocker was 62/63 years old during this performance. I think his voice got richer as he aged. Procol Harum and the Moody Blues were not afraid to use an orchestra in their music. This performance was 2006.

The best band ever in my opinion and pleased you enjoyed this wonderful performance. Yes please listen to more of this great band. I could suggest dozens of tracks but would start with A Salty Dog or Grand Hotel. They are great with or without orchestra and I've seen them live 8 times (5 with orchestra),alas the death of lead singer and leader Gary Brooker in 2022 means I won't add to that number.Yes please do more Procol songs I promise you won't regret it if you get half the pleasure I get from them you will be thankful believe me. Ps I enjoyed the smile on your face as you appreciated this performance and will check you out again.

If you liked that, and I know you did, try The Moody Blues Live! Full orchestration and a deep treasure trove of music! My husband saw them several times in the 70s and 90s and he said they were fabulous!!

New subscriber. This was filmed at Ledreborg Castle in Denmark w-the Danish National Concert Orchestra. There are some misconceptions surrounding the meaning of the song - see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pf73XwiZIFQ.html for the interview w-composer/lead singer Gary Brooker & writer Keith Reid. Gary was founder of the band began in '67 & he passed away in Feb. 2022, Keith passed in March of this yr. It is also said that Reid was "going to reveal the true meaning before he died" but he died before he explained anything. Many people believe it was about a drunken one-night stand. Contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach but was inspired by & does reference Bach's "Sleepers, Wake!" and "Air on the G String!" As per Reid, the line "as the miller told his tale" is definitely not a reference to Chaucer's Miller's Tale. Reid has repeatedly explained he'd never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote A Whiter Shade of Pale. Procol Harum is supposed to have been the name of a friend's cat - the name is a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning "far beyond these things"), or that it was a corruption of Procellarm, a vast ocean on the Moon. In Roman Times Vestal Virgins were priestesses and acquired their name after Vesta. the noddess of the hearth and home to keen the home fires burnina. It was their duty to not only remain a virgin for 30 years but they were to keep Vesta's sacred fire burning. Thank you.

Like a number of UK rock artists from the 1960s, Gary's singing was greatly influenced by Ray Charles; indeed, Stevie Winwood and Joe Cocker even more so.

The Beatles' Penny Lane is a baroque-pop masterpiece recorded with flutes, oboes, piccolos, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn, English horn, tubular bells, piano and double bass. Likewise, Eleanor Rigby was recorded solely with classical string octet accompaniment - four violins, two violas, and two cellos.
