David Botteril, who produced the Aenima album, had the best description of TOOL I've ever heard. "TOOL is a prog band, but in a completely different way. 99% of prog bands use the song to showcase their musicianship. TOOL uses their musicianship to showcase the song."

Oooo wow that is really good, I hadn't heard that one. Seen only a few interviews with David Bottrill in the past, know just a few other studio albums he produced previously. But what I could glean from those interviews, his thoughtful and analytical responses, his quiet calm ('zen' came to my mind*), but mostly the intangibles that all add up to we'll call an overall 'vibe', left me feeling like "Of course" those five guys worked, played and meshed so completely and brilliantly in the studio, processes resulting in masterworks, two of them. In whatever form it may take I hope in the future Tool and Bottrill seize the opportunity to collaborate again. (*Zen and the art of record producing?)

Hell yeah!!! One of my favorite Tool songs!! Next time, I highly highly recommend "Right In Two" from this same album. It's one of the best Tool songs ever made, and the lyrics are very impactful. Must disagree. I've never really cared for Right in Two or Vicarious, and take this with a grain of salt because "bad Tool" is very rare, and is still better than 90% of the schlock out there. I've always found the poetry in Maynard lyrics on Right in Two and Vicarious to lack mystery and interpretation, which is unusual for Maynard but not unheard of. They're rather obvious in terms of their meaning. While other Tool does this, like Aenima and HWP, they make up for it with aggression, Wings for Marie has a personal emotional quality and interesting composition, and Rosetta Stoned is perhaps Tool's most bizarre composition. Right in Two and Vicarious are more nakedly political, and come off a tad preachy, if you ask me. Compared to Lateralus, Stinkfist, Third Eye, Schism, Pneuma, Jambi, or Disposition/Reflection/Triad, Right in Two is rather basic, especially lyrically, reminding me of the weaker tracks on Undertow, but without the angst and novelty. I'd suggest Rosetta Stoned off this. The story is very tongue in cheek and the music is a riot of styles.

So the song Forty Six & 2 decided to play on the radio for me, at 4:23pm on a Friday 14 years ago now. I was completely hyper focused on what was going on in front of me, rather then what was both in the front of my car, and on either side of it at the time. The very moment Tool's song came on, it forced me out of that mental zone right when I was about to get hit by a semi 16 wheeler truck that had run a red light on the left side of me. I was able to slam my foot down on the break pedal as the large truck came barreling right on through the 4 way intersection, a mere 2.5ft away from making impact with the nose of my Toyota. Sufficed to say...Forty Six & 2 saved my life that day. And I'd surely be dead 6 feet under as of right now if it hadn't of popped up on the radio station when it did.

The Talk Box guitar solo is beautifully done! Those of us oldies that grew up in the 70s know it from Peter Frampton, Do You Feel Like I Do? Check the live version, it was a monster. I think Frampton’s dad invented it.

Jambi as a title is also part of Tools great weird sense of humor. Jambi was a genie represented by a disembodied head in a box on Pee Wees Playhouse a kids show from the 90’s. Hence all the lyrics about wishes and whatnot. Adam’s TalkBox solo is so insane though. Made me all giddy inside the first time I heard it. Check out Right in Two some time off this album. The guitar solo is Adam Jones using a Talk Box which is an effect pedal that sends the sound of the guitar through a plastic tube into the players mouth and the guitarist manipulates their mouth to help create that sound. Adam said that he asked Joe Walsh, who famously used a Talk Box on his song "Rocky Mountain Way", for advice on how to use it properly. 🎸

@@tinygaucho4572 it's a preference I suppose... Some people like the planned version of a studio... others enjoy the jamming kind of spontaneous version of a live performance ... In the studio you can cut, paste, redo and reperform a song until it's perfect... On a live stage the band truly shows it's colors... it's one shot... no room for mistakes, no redos... and in this case they actually made the song even more magical than the original in my opinion... that's why I recommend that over the studio version...

@@konstantinospapakostas2217 Sure, I get that. But you are recommending that to someone who has only listened to a handful of Tool songs overall, and not Pushit at all. I doubt your initial experience with the song was the live version, but instead was the studio version. So when you did hear the live version you had something to compare and contrast with. Maybe I'm wrong, but most people heard the studio version first. My overall point, though, is that when recommending songs to reactioners it's important to remember that they haven't been listening to the band for decades like we have. It's not about recommending YOUR favorite song/version, but rather what we feel would be good introductions. For me, a live version should never be someone's first listen, but rather treated as something that can enhance your love of the song.

@@tinygaucho4572 I respectfully disagree. I believe that reactioners would need recommendations of songs that would evoke a reaction. Be that a studio or a live version of something. We're not here to flex on how many years we've been following a band. We're here to recommend songs that would make interesting and impactful reactions. Now as for me. I have heard the live version before listening to the studio version of PushIt. And that solidified (to me at least) that the live version is much better in a lot of respects. The unconventional spirit of the band, always trying to reinvent and better themselves, the intimacy between band and audience in a live setting, the stellar performance of Maynard (maybe one of the best performances if not THE best performance he's ever put out in my opinion... I'm willing to bet I'm not alone in that opinion) and last but certainly not least, the impeccable improvisational skills of the band... Things that are surely lacking on the studio version. Too each their own I suppose. But the point is that we are not recommending songs to reactioners to pull them into the tool rabbit hole... that comes by itself... We are recommending song that are more likely to get a reaction. That's the whole point of being a reactioner...

My favorite song from Tool is “Descending” because it has a bit of everything Tool has done over their career. It’s a masterpiece lyrically describing (in my opinion) the descent of society into “apathy”. That takes the first half and it has some great changes, pauses and keeps coming back to the same subtle bassline which seems to be the foundation of the song. After that, it’s Danny, Justin and Adam just throwing everything at you musically. The problem is to appreciate the song and it’s meaning, you have to listen to the studio version but to appreciate what they’re really doing, you have to watch the “Live” version (videos clipped together multiple sources).

Jambi is a criminally underrated song and I love that it's a new favorite of yours (based on the thumbnail). For me there's an emotional aspect to it that just speaks truth. That being said, I think Jambi will only be your new favorite until your hear Pushit. The entire tone of the Aenima album is simply amazing, but Pushit is this slow burn that has an incredible crescendo of all aspects of the band, particularly Maynard. Maybe his most emotional vocals in a song not about Judith. Please, though, listen to the studio version first. Always. One of my favorite lines from Pushit: "Rest your trigger on my finger". While that won't explain the whole song, it is a good example of the content. Also, I think you'd really dig a band called Kyuss. Either Gardenia or Whitewater.

I have a theory on this; this was tools most commercially successful album, fueled by the hype from lateralus, and because the vocal portion of the tool fanbase want the band to be their special "thing" and not a mainstream success they generally avoid even talking about this album. Even though there's an argument to made for it as the best album they released. Personally 10,000 days just barely edges out lateralus as my favorite tool album.

I remember being a teenager in the 90’s and getting just gut punched and blown away by Opiate. I was hopelessly hooked right there. 10,000 Days was the culmination of everything I love about Tool and stands alone as my favourite album from them.

Found out about Tool through my older brother Levi who never lived with me cause of some reasons im not gonna make public but when I was growing up he would visit 1-2 times every year and when I was about 10 or so he showed me Tool. We rode around in his car and listened to 10,000 Days on CD and when I heard Jambi I was hooked. I'm turning 23 this year and I got a Tool tattoo last year and plan to get another. They had such an impact on my life and has always made me think about my brother who I rarely see now. I highly highly recommend that you listen to Right In Two as well.

Jambi is a character form an old kids program called pee-wee's playhouse and the sorcerer was called Jambi and he used to say some chanting words that sound exatctly like the guitar does "meka leka hi make a hinie hoe. say it while Adam Jones plays the riff and it's just that rhythm

This is one of the few later era songs where ADAM takes center stage. They usually feature Justin and Danny more, and reasonably so. Adam usually takes a less-is-more approach to the music. He goes hard on this one. Maybe that’s why it feels more aggressive.

He most certainly did. He’s very subtle and doesn’t show off. Jambi and more recently 7empest is Adam really coming out front and really showing us his guitar skills. I’m not a musician but one doesn’t have to be to know when someone is killing it.

Jambi is a reference to the genie from Pee-wee's Playhouse, if I'm not mistaken. The bassist said the main guitar riff sounded like the phrase that summons Jambi.

"Jambi" is the name of the Genie on Peewee's playhouse. Apparently when Justin was writing a rift, Adam described the tempo of the rift to Maynard as Jambi's catch phrase Mika Lika Hi, Mika Lika Hiny Ho. So Maynard wrote the song about Wishes. As in Art is in real Life, Maynard likes to write about himself. "All you know about me is what I sold you." ~HWAP. 10,000 days is heavily influenced about Maynard's Mother, Judith Marie. She was a paraplegic for most of Maynard's life (since he was 11, according to the song Jimmy (James and Jim are the same name interchangeably, so Maynard James/Jimmy Keenan). Maynard in this song is the Sultan sitting on top of his throne and success, tempting the Devil with his song, (Judith ~ APC). And he wishes now how he can take it all away, her pain and suffering all this time with declining health. She gave it all for him, lifted him up and turned him around, and she calls him her Benevolent Son/Sun (play on words). Jambi sits just before Wings pt 1 and pt 2.

I believe Adam once said Justin came in with a riff and it sounded like "Jambi" from Pee-wee's playhouse who granted one wish per day. Hence, the name, but like most Tool songs has many meanings. I think that is the reference when he MJK says" just trying to hold on for one more day" as Jambi will grant him another wish the next day.

This song leads into the two 10,000 Days tracks, about the painful journey through his mother's death. I remember reading somewhere that Jambi is also about his mom - proclaiming that he would give it all away to have her back just one more day.

That guitar instrumental you were thougt Maynard was screaming was Adam Jones on guitar. It is somewhat of a vocal. He has to use a device in his mouth similar to a harmonica coupled with his guitar. That's pretty much the only TOOL song where he does that that I'm aware of.

One of Tools more simple songs (lyrically) but so effectively written. Maynard can impart beauty in anger, humour or sadness. He has an understanding of not only how to deliver emotions but more so to draw them out of you. 2 more great listens are "Right in Two" and "H."

Oh man! One of my favorite Tool albums! I bought the special edition copy on release. The case with the stereoscopic lenses, and 3D imagery. Jambi is incredible! "The Pot" is also fahken incredible! You should check that one out too.

Not sure but 10000 days was an album about his mother's struggle, this song refers to the fact that he lives a very very lavish lifestyle but would give it all up for one more day with his mom.

I'm from the era of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, all great bands, Zeppelin my favorite. Once Tool came out they became my all time favorite. It's not easy to find a live Tool video with decent sound, but there are a few out there.
