The whole 'Paul is the bad guy' claim people are making is a bit of an oversimplification of what Frank Herbert actually intended. Paul was intended to be a critique of 'Heroic' leaders that people blindly follow out of religious beliefs, their charisma, or because they have elevated the 'hero' into something that the hero themselves know they're not. It becomes much more apparent in the next book that Paul is disgusted by the things that he is pushed into doing by the religious movement he has been forced to lead but can't control, and by the way that people blindly serve him even though he knows the religion is hollow. Frank Herbert always intended Paul to be this heroic figure by the end of the first book only to deconstruct the idea in the second.

I found the movies very impressive. I like how it had me rooting for Paul and Jessica but at the same they became a bit scary. It kinda shows the shadowside of the powerfantasy. I also appreciate how they are direct descendants of the Baron who is extremely hateable and how the doctor both betrays and helps Leto. I like the nuanced way the story shows good/evil. You made me curious for the books as they are somewhat different and more elaborate. I like how the story of Dune is still relevant despite it's age. It must have a timeless quality.

Chani is described in the book as killing Fremen challengers to Paul within Sietch Tabr .. although yes, it's brief. Shes more akin to a priestess or aid to the Reverend Mother in the text.

Great video! I also read the book for the first time a couple days ago, and something I noticed is that Paul only likes chani because it’s something of his own doing… if that makes sense. Basically, he loves chani, someone he’s not supposed to love as a fuck you to the Bene Gesserit, and paths he sees he’s going down. His love for chani is something he did out of his own free will
@yarsivad000.5
@yarsivad000.5 5 месяцев назад
In the book Chani does kill Freemen who come from different Freemen groups who want to challenge Paul. Paul has trained her in the Bene Geserit fighting style. He is concerned learning this and Chani explains that word will get out that Mua’dibs mate will out fight you before you can challenge Paul. It will cut down on challenges.

Wow crazy! I've been reading this book too on and off for the past few weeks, only have 200 more pages to go and it's mind blowingly good. I hated the first Dune movie, then fell in love with the second movie, and when I heard of the direction the series goes I knew I had to read the books. My only real complaint is that getting into the world of dune was pretty complicated and I kept having to go to the encyclopedia for everything, until things finally started making more sense. Paul having the trip with the fremen after eating their food was scary, when it was stated that people that take spice typically push a lot of thoughts into their subconscious, but for Paul, whos mind was trained by his mother, a bene gesserit, and who was also on the way to becoming a mentat, the trip would have a huge effect on his mind compared to others. The detail the author goes into is insane, how Paul saw all these different paths, that the cave was a nexus point to all these different possible futures, where Paul just wanted to sit down and do nothing because it was too much for his mind to handle, but then the realization that even sitting down could effect the future made it so that he could never really relax, and was constantly aware that any action could cause new paths to open, and others to close. Really really loving the book, as soon as I finish I'm jumping straight into Messiah.

Apparently, FH wrote Dune in response to two US presidents. Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. While people were rightfully quick to criticize Nixon, people had blind faith in Kennedy. He believed JFK to be the more dangerous leader as due to his popularity, few were willing to call out his BS.
@higginswalsan

He was absolutely correct in that. Nixon and Kennedy were quite similar in ways people don’t realize because Kennedy got good press. Kennedy even stole his election in a far shadier manner than Watergate.

One of my top 5 book series I've ever read. And the Paul actor must be very difficult to cast. Someone who can be a semi-innocent 15 year old -> battle hardened, jihad starting, cold blooded dude in a couple hours of film..

Chani kills a Fremen who came to challenge Paul, she then made it a new policy that any Fremen challenger who wanted to fight Paul to the death had to fight her first. Also Jessica only pushes the religious stuff when first meeting Stilgar and tribe. Every other time during or after the time skip, she is warning Paul to not lean into religion so much because its dangerous.

Gender swapping Kynes worked in the movie, but it also doesn't really fit into literary Dune because gender roles are heavily entrenched which is one of the reasons the Bene Gesseritt exist. The BG give women a place of power within the strict feudal system. The Fremen seem a bit more freeform meritocracy but not entirely. I do feel like a longer form series of Dune would want to keep a male Kynes to highlight the feudal overtone of the Duneiverse.

I would advise you to read the first two books, before you go into the films. Otherwise you might get a wrong idea about the story. The films aren't quite as nuanced as the novels. However, they are far less dialogue-heavy and bring images to the screen that are completed in a few sentences in the book.

DV cutting Alia's role out of Part Two was the single greatest unforgivable sin from so many standpoints, and as much as I have tremendously enjoyed these new adaptations (and never really cared for the other ones), this among other questionable changes in Part Two really tarnished the overall experience for me and makes me wonder what the hell they have in store for Part Three...
