Great movie - Elvis was 23 and the army gave him a 6 month deferment to finish the film. Another fun song is Return to Sender from the movie "Girls Girls Girls" 1962. Your reactions are so good!

This was the film that Elvis thought was his best. And this is the only film where he was given somewhat critical approval. This is the film that the Army gave him a deferment to finish the film and then go to the Army.

When you read about Elvis movies, he was known for being on time, knowing his lines & even knowing most of the other main characters lines too. The more I've learned about Elvis, he was not only a natural but just brilliant for not really having any or much training in singing or acting . How many entertainers can say that ...

This is true! He would memorize almost the entire script! Must’ve had close to a photographic memory! Not to mention the untold number of songs he could call to mind at will. Just amazing!

I believe Elvis is the only man I’ve ever seen who could do the “limp wrist” thing and still look 100% masculine in spite of it! 😁 By the way, that’s legendaries Walter Matthau and Carolyn Jones sitting at the table. Carolyn played Morticia Addams a few years later in the 60’s sitcom “The Addams Family.” This was Elvis’s personal favorite film of all the ones he made in his Hollywood career. Well worth watching in its entirety!

Some fun facts about this movie. It was based on a book called "A stone for Danny Fisher" in which Danny was a boxer from New York and the role was to be played by James Dean. After Dean`s death the movie some time later was pitched to Elvis. The boxer now became a singer and New York became New Orleans. It`s the first Elvis movie to be shot on location and Elvis`s army call up was deferred for 6 weeks so the movie could be completed. It was directed by Michael Curtiz of Casablanca fame who was not too keen on working with Elvis but was pleasantly surprised by his work ethic and professionalism.

Thank you for another greatly appreciated reaction🎉 You know how to bring techicolor in describing everything going on whether it's a concert or movie ....what a joy to listen to your observations... King Creole was his 4th movie...1. Loving Me Tender 2. Loving You 3. Jailhouse Rock I enjoyed this film and thought he was a natural actor...just my opinion (I know there are others who will disagree) He wanted to be a great actor..it was another passion of his and I wish he could have had the opportunity to show that he was capable of becoming the actor he desired to be... Thank you so much for continuing to honor his legacy. ...his fans appreciate it very much.

The entire King Creole soundtrack was a progressive mix of rock 'n roll, pop and dixie jazz. Very powerful and experimental. Elvis never received much praise for the way he blended music, it is widely overlooked. In 1963 he made Fun In Acapulco with great latin influences, like Bossa Nova Baby. Anyway, from King Creole best song in my opinion is Crawfish, a duet with black singer Kitty White. So beautiful. Thanks for another insightful reaction.

That is Walter Matthau and Carolyn Jones (from the Addams Family). I'm a movie buff, so I've seen so many really bad movies and terrible actors. Elvis showed so much promise in the pre-army movies. He's really great in this one. He's a natural. You know he's acting but you don't know he's acting. LOL Love this song here; if you watch a little before the song you'll understand the scene. I also loved it when he sang it for the Comeback Special.

I'm loving your in-depth reactions to Elvis. "King Creole" was his fourth movie and his personal favorite. Fun fact: he asked Walter Matthau for acting advice. His answer was "I've seen you act, and you don't need any advice from me." I have a couple reaction requests from Elvis' second movie, "Loving You", in 1957: "Lonesome Cowboy" and "Young Dreams".

Elvis liked James Dean, Marlon Brando, Dean Martin a lot...studied their acting. He was an observer since his childhood. Sam Bell, Elvis childhood friend said this in an interview with Buz Luhrmann. This was his 3 movie. ( Love me tender/ Loving You/ King Creole) I often wonder why the title songs are barely reacted to. Thanks for your fascinating reactions!💚☀️

King Creole was the movie that proved that Elvis Presley could act. He played a James Dean type of guy who was trying to do the right thing, but trouble always found him. He's kind of a likeable villain in a lot of his early films and he plays the role well. Elvis was known for his fight scenes early on.

You are one of the best review/reactors out there. No doubt. In your next reaction- New Orleans, We see a complete different style in how Elvis can performed a song. King Creole was Elvis's 4th film. He was in the Army while trying to complete it. It must have been tough for him, As his Mother passed away that year too. 1958. Nearly same age as Elvis. 46. And the same month. Aug.

I think this Elvis movie has a great soundtrack, as for his performance, the way he sings, almost as if he is looking into Walter’s eyes, it’s definitely a defiance. If I may, I’ll suggest another song from King Creole. Crawfish ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CozU0-g6JYQ.htmlsi=2zGvMk0iuVL95F1r Thanks again

Hi Mike, great pick ups from this clip. It is always nice to see old favourites through new eyes. King Creole was Elvis’ 4th film. Elvis personally wrote to the Memphis Draft Board to request a deferment. He explained to them that Paramount had already spent up to $350,000 on pre-production of the film, and that many jobs were dependent on his ability to complete filming, which was due to begin on January 13. They granted him an extension until the middle of March. Concerned that this would be his last career output for 2 years, Elvis dug very deep to give his absolute performance as a serious, dramatic actor. Author Alanna Nash described it as "the performance that would forever define his potential".

And thank you for planning to react to “New Orleans”, I have always wanted to see someone with some musical knowledge comment on that song. I am waiting with bated breath for that one…I am anxious to hear your thoughts on Elvis’s vocals on this song. Also, besides Elvis’s own band, who are playing with him, and the Jordinaires, who are singing with him(I love how Elvis wanted to take everyone with him on this ride to success) there are just some amazing jazz musicians in this movie. The trumpet players are phenomenal and compliment Elvis’s voice so much. The key feature of the song “Trouble” is the use of stop time, or pauses in the music, during the first half of the progression. This was commonly used in New Orleans jazz and alludes to the riffs used by Muddy Waters and Bo Didley.

Nice reaction, but I want to clarify one thing. Elvis appeared as a regular on the Louisiana Hayride for about a year, not the Grand Ole Opry. He auditioned very early on for the Opry but was not well received at this mecca of country music. The manager advised him to return to driving a truck. They did not want him or his rock and roll, and he was never invited back. The Hayride was much more welcoming to new and different performers and he was embraced warmly there.

Hi Mike! Another wonderful review with great insights. Why do people love Elvis so much? I think the photographer, Alfred Wertheimer, who took, unbeknownst to himself, photographs of a man who was to become the most well known person in the world ( next to Jesus) said it best: “Elvis permitted closeness. He permitted you to go as close as three feet from his face and he wouldn't act any different than if you were twenty feet away. He was able to focus so much on what he was doing. He also made the girls cry….Because you can make them jump, scream, yell... you can make them do all kinds of things through public relations. But you cannot make them cry. Crying is an emotion that comes from deep down and Elvis was able to reach deep down.” There was a sincerity to Elvis--unlike the carefully managed persona’s of stars today…Elvis was always himself. You would love the Wetheimer photos…they have been in the Smithsonian as well as exhibited all over the world… even Russia. He captured Elvis in 1956 when RCA wasn’t even willing to spend money on color film because they thought Elvis may just be a flash in the pan, so most of them are in black and white, any color ones were taken at the expense of Wetheimer (which of course paid off 10 fold). He said Elvis was so natural and was never fake, he didn’t “put on”, he just was. I think you see that rawness and sincerity in his first movies. King Creole was Elvis’s fourth movie, right before going into the army. I think it is some amazing music because it captures, as you said, this coming together of all these different musical influences through the conduit of this amazingly beautiful, sincere, talented, and unique man. The first song of the movie “Crawfish” is a kind of duet between Elvis and the jazz singer Kitty White. It is amazing and probably historic because Elvis is singing with a black woman in 1958. If you really want to see the thing every female Elvis fan looked forward to in his concerts, you should watch “Love Me Tender” from the 1970 Vegas concert you have already seen several songs from--it is an Elvis trademark to do what he did during this song-I don’t want to give it away-I would love to see your raw reaction.😉

There's a video of Elvis talking to the Sweet Inspirations before rehearsing the song "WORDS". Which I believe is a Bee Gees song. Also, a video that shows the rehearsal and the Vegas performance of the song "Twenty Days Twenty Nights" And any song from these Elvis movies... Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, Loving You, G.I. Blues or Kid Galahad. These are the ones I've seen and all the songs are great. I could go on and on with song suggestions 😄😄😄 Thanks for sharing your Elvis journey. Much appreciated.

I always thought Elvis was a great instinctual actor and just got so bored with the mid-60's lightweight musicals. He always gave it a good try even while hating the scripts and songs. This movie was his favorite and it shows. The music is exceptional and Elvis is perfect with the New Orleans vibe. So excited to see your comments about "New Orleans ". I hope you will do the other songs from King Creole. The only one (IMO) that isn't up to the others is "As Long As I Have You". Thanks for this one.❤❤❤
