First time ever welding, literally this video was my first test and try. Started out a bit spotty but towards the end I started to get longer and more consistent arcs. Looking forward to my next project! Stay tuned.

Thank you all for the feedback! Looking back its pretty funny how clueless I was, apparently I didn't read the manual or watch enough videos! =D Anyway you live and learn, ain't no shame in my game! Everyone has to start somewhere and this is where I started. I'll update one day when I can find free time away from the wife and kids...

You have to strike it like a match then hover over it. Once you get the arc started, focus on your puddle. If the arc is too violent, you’re too far away. If it sticks, you’re too close. You wanna find that sweet spot and stay 1/8 away from your material. Just stay in that puddle and drag it along. Good luck
@jayyhick65
@jayyhick65 4 года назад
Can you define “close”? This info is SUPER important for me
@bulziahebrand
@bulziahebrand 4 года назад
Jayhick365 - - - You wanna be 1/8th of an inch away from whatever you’re welding...Almost touching it, without touching it. If you’re less than 1/8th of an inch away from your material, it’s most likely gonna stick. You’re too close....If you’re more than an 1/8th of an inch away, you’re too far. The arc is gonna be violent and you’ll get a lot of splatter. You wanna keep a tight steady arc so the weld can be clean and uniform. If you don’t know what 1/8 is, get your tape measure. Look at 1 inch. Count the first two of those small black lines within that inch. That’s 1/8. That’s how close

Clamp whatever you’re welding, sticking is not uncommon unless you have a rod oven. Also don’t bang the rod on the metal, it’s tough to strike an arc that way. Instead scratch it like a you would a match but no more than 1/2” . When it lights up lift it slightly off the work piece and try and keep it lit. Welding is all about finesse, the harder you try the more mistakes you make

that big piece of metal was cast iron, you cant weld cast iron with a regular arc wire, you need tig for that or mig with flux cored wire
@G56AG
@G56AG 3 года назад
Basic electricity, you need a complete circuit to make it work. you attached your ground to the metal leg, and then set the work on the wood top which insulates it from the ground, that won't work as you found out.

I'm very happy so far, for the price it was a great purchase to get me started. As I said, first time welder so I dont have a lot to compare it too. Originally I started with 6011 rods and I since switched to 7018 which have been working a bit better. I plan to have an update soon. I havent tried a 220v socket yet either which is supposed to be much easier to maintain the arc. Thanks for watching.

Some concept of the difference between insulators and conductors would help this welder with completing a circuit. It is dangerous to work with electricity without that understanding. For example: Wood or plywood is an insulator and does not generally conduct electric current (the "problem" he had initially). Good clamping and work holding is also necessary for safety. Enjoy but be careful. P.S.Do not weld while standing in water! Water is generally a conductor and you are at risk standing in it while working with electricity.
@hotskillet
@hotskillet 3 года назад
Key points 1. The best electric conductor is wood. You’re guaranteed a solid ground as long as your material sits on wood. 2. No need to use welding clamps on your material( They just get in the way so just steady your work with your hands.

I've never welded in my life but after watching your video and laughing over the wood table and not getting an arc, I went and ordered the same Dekopro 160 which should be here in a few days.Hopefully I'll video my first attempt and hope it's half as funny as yours, after all..how hard can it be? My famous last words. Not too many videos make me laugh but this had me howling, even tho I'm sure that wasn't your intention. I'm not picking on you but I think you found your niche. You should do all your upcoming videos in the same style. Make them funny and from the point of a complete noob dufus. I bet you would get plenty of followers, I know I'd watch. There is a woodworker channel that does goofy stuff like you in his videos, he's hysterical and one of my favorites too. Check out Bourbon Moth. Keep pumping out the tongue in cheek videos and you'll be a new sensation.

Electricity doesn't pass through wood. You grounded only the metal base of the table, you didn't complete the circuit to the metal workpiece. Need to see more YT vids and/or learn about electricity, particularly what are and are not conductive materials?
@garaging
@garaging 4 года назад
Haha yea, I realize now that the clamp is actually to pass the current through the metal itself not just to send the electricity into the ground. Ive watched a handful of videos online but i guess some of the principles don't stick in your mind till you actually do it yourself. Thanks for the tip!
