FYI!! - This is part two of the three part video series unboxing all my new espresso stuff.
I have done the unboxing videos of the grinder, espresso machine, and a first-use video separately, more digestible!
If you're interested in seeing those I've playlisted them all together. I've also created an extended cut version of all the videos into one long vid.
Whatever way you'd like to see them there's an option!
So, hi!!
About this video, this is the Gaggia Viva Deluxe compact single boiler espresso machine with steam wand. It was purchased as an Amazon Warehouse deal. The Orbego'zo burr grinder is a great inexpensive option... wide adjustment range and the top burr carrier is mounted to the burr using a couple screws, so very easy to add filler metal sheet tape inbetween to get the fineness level we need for a decent espresso...
Anyways thanks for watching, enjoy the video, and check out the other ones in the series!
AND.. as always.. like, comment, and SUBSCRIBE!

Congrats and good choice! I've been using mine for 6+ years now and really happy with it (same model but back then it was called the Saeco Poemia). My only advice is that the portafilter should be in more tightly- in the video yours was in the 7 o'clock position, it should be in the 5 o'clock position- I think perhaps you put in just a bit too much coffee that's why you weren't able to tighten it all the way

Thanks for the tips! I think you were right about the coffee quantity, I tend to overload it!

Gracias por el video, tendrás la función con las cápsulas? Qué tal va? Cuáles tipo de cápsulas le sirven?

Hello! With the modification taking the parts out from under the filter basket it cannot do capsules properly , unless you reverse the process which you can do! I did not try any pods in the machine though in the past I always had nice coffee from ILLY brand ESE pods.. thanks for your question!

Hey man, a have the same espresso machine since like a year, but i struggle with measurement how much to tamp and how much is out also what type of coffee to use. I usually buy Lavazza coffy alredy preground. Can you give me your measurement ? Thanks in advance!
@bikesandbeans
@bikesandbeans 9 месяцев назад
If I recall the basket can really only hold 15-16 gram. Tamping only needs to be enough pressure until the coffee is firm underneath. It's more important to have an even layer of espresso in the filter before you tamp.. You will have better results. Lavassa makes guys tasting espresso but it's much better to buy beans and have a good fine grinder. Breville dose control is a good starting point for a home grinder. The preground packages of espresso coffee are not really fine enough to do a great cup.

@bikesandbeans but how do you know when it is enough and you turn off the extraction? I found 1 to 2 ratio: if it is 15 grams in the basket, then you get 30 grams out in your cup. I also heard about 25 - 30 seconds rule for espresso, but in Viva case, you get something like lungo or americano after 25 seconds, definitely not espresso. So I am a bit frustrated about measurements, and it is difficult to find the right ratio

The amount for time ratio you're saying is more due to the day flow of coffee because you are using preground espresso. With a proper grind 1:2 ratio is correct
@MrMits92
@MrMits92 9 месяцев назад
@@bikesandbeans so you recommend 1:2 ratio ?

Yes for sure

I did the same procedure to mine and water is coming out only from panarello, not the group head 😢
@bikesandbeans
@bikesandbeans 10 месяцев назад
Strange I can only suggest to make sure the steam wand control is fully closed tight .. that is what will force water out the group head instead. If that doesn't work they maybe forgot the valve seal upon assembly??
@Dimitris-sf5pr
@Dimitris-sf5pr 10 месяцев назад
@@bikesandbeans I guess the steam wand control is out of order because no matter if I turn it or not, the water still pours from panarello
@bikesandbeans
@bikesandbeans 9 месяцев назад
yeah it might be missing it's gasket to seal it when its screwed in (closed), that would stop the water pressure from going out the group head. Sad!

My knob for the steam valve spins around 3 to 4 times each way. I'm not sure where to start and stop as far as opening it. Any tips? I'm doing exactly what you are in your video and no water is coming through.

I think the steam valve may not be open but other than that I can't figure out why it won't work
@bikesandbeans
@bikesandbeans Год назад
If you're facing the machine side with the steam control knob its just like a normal screw, threading to the right (inwards) will close the valve and threading left (outward) will open the valve.. Once the valve is open you can flick the control know (espresso or steam setting) set it to espresso and water should come out the steam wand priming the system. Good luck, let me know how it goes!

Just tried and water is still not leaving the resivour. Any other ideas what might be the problem?
@bikesandbeans
@bikesandbeans Год назад
Only other thing I can suggest is that when you do this make sure the water tank is completely full. The water weight pressing down into the tubing will make pressure to help prime it. If all else fails you can try getting a syringe to press water into the pump to force prime it. I haven't done it but there's videos of it out there. I have seen it work on stuck machines.

No luck with that either. I appreciate the help anyway.
