Hi Chris you could mention that the power cable should be connected directly to the battery to eliminate any interference from the electrical system on the boat

Love my Fish Hawk. Speed, depth and temperature at the ball is key. Without it you are just washing lures.

Chris, As far as electronics go I am mostly with you in that I will take a FishHawk or other temperature probe device over anything else. The mostly and not 100% come in at a radio for safety purposes only, have to have that. I know I'm splitting hairs here. Lol. Knowing the true temperature and depth at baits is a huge advantage. It allows a person to set the correct depths on your lead cores, coppers, and dippies. I have had FishHawks for about 7 years and never had anything but minor issues usually caused by operator error or a dirty transducer. One thing I will say is when you take your probe off at the end of the day take the battery pack cap off and let it dry out. It does not leak but going from cool to warm water all day they build up moisture and will wreck batteries and the connections. FishHawk service is second to none they truly stand behind there product. I have two units both 4xD one has bluetooth and one does not as it was just before they added that. Bluetooth unit stays on the big charter boat and the other goes on the small trailer boat. Probes are interchangeable from head unit to head unit.

I agree with you on the radio of course for emergencies. But I think we are talking the same language. Thanks for the comment Mark.

Bought one last year x4d, wouldn't fish without it, like you said, found out at time when trolling with the current it is amazing how fast you need to go, to get proper speed so you have proper lure action at depth

It’s always interesting to see what you folks are up to back there. The conditions you fish are wildly different than what we fish out here on eastern pacific. I can’t think of a west coast boat with one these. It’s interesting but I think it’s not that helpful to us folks out on left edge. Our surface temps and bottom temps are practically the same. Usually only a couple of degrees different out to about 300 FOW. Chinook out here are usually within 20 feet of the bottom regardless of water depth. I would hate to plant that device in a reef or a lost crab pot. The jellyfish, weeds and other debris would plug up the speed wheel or encase the head unit in a gob off jellyfish snot. Jellyfish are nasty.

Thanks for always being a part of this Bob. It is amazing how similar, yet different, our fisheries are. Temps here vary here up to 20 or more degrees at times within just a few feet of water. There are times when we have the same temperature water from top to bottom, but usually only when it's very warm or very cold outside.

Can you mount it onto a Ram mount system to remove for secure storage? I like there temp gauge HD for finding the zone. Looking forward to the installation of the unit.

The head unit is easily removed from the base for storage. As well as the probe. Great question.

Will the probe hold up to the abuse of mounting the ball directly to the unit with the swivel on top of the ball?
@tangledtacklefishing
@tangledtacklefishing 4 года назад
It comes with a break away cable that attaches between the ball and the probe.

Captain, #1) I completely agree that a speed and temp gauge is the most important electronics one can own for GL salmon/trout fishing. #2) I don't believe the Fish Hawk even back when I first bought my X4 required coated DR cables. The Depth Raiders did, not Fish Hawks. #3) Don't ya just hate it when your string sucks up into the hood of your hoodie!

R H correct on the coated cable. My old 840 didn’t require it either. - Jim

I think you're right RH, I must have had my brain cross-wired thinking about the Depth Raiders. And you completely nailed it on the sweatshirt string. I didn't notice it until 10 minutes after I did the video and then it took my 10 more minutes to get it back where it's supposed to be. Good eye buddy.

uu////My experience with FishHawk: A new one last year, first ever speed and temp at the ball device for me. I was less than impressed, the probe seemed to 'act up' every so often. It took a couple of times before I realized it needed new batteries. After replacing batteries, it would be fine for a few trips. When I went to remove the head unit at seasons end the power hook up spun in the head unit case. By the probe acting up, I mean it made no sense. If I troll north and sog is 2.0 and speed at the ball is 2.2, turning to the south should give sog (speed over ground, gps speed) 2.0 and down speed near 1.8. Indicating a current of 0.2 mph to the south. It would not do that, even close to it. I boxed it up to send back, they do have a buy back and I cannot say I caught more fish because of it. I wish I could recall the ladies name, but she was very understanding and apologetic. I received my unit a week or so later. The power connection was fixed, the note said they could find nothing wrong with the probe, but replaced it anyway. If you are on the fence, do not worry about them standing behind their product. My experience is they will.
