Fishing for a Fetal Monster (The Mummy)

Sadly this lovely cow’s calf died in mid gestation. The synchronization program we were using to attempt to AI her stimulated her to try to expel the calf which has mummified. He had probably died a few months ago. Her cervix was closed but we eventually got it open enough to deliver this little monster! Wowsa!
The procedure when we diagnose a cow carrying a mummified fetus is to administer prostaglandins. Often the cow will expel the fetus and may need a follow up check. If they don’t expel the mummified calf within 4 days or so, the cervix will need to be manually dialated further, otherwise it will close again. This went well!
It would be inappropriate to perform a c-section for a case like this. I do everything I am capable of to remove deceased calves vaginally, the risk of peritonitis is high otherwise for the mother.
Cheers!

Let’s just say, I was a mother who, after giving birth to my son, retained his undiagnosed and underdeveloped twin. The delivery of this was spontaneous after 2 days (and much pain and bleeding) which then required a general anaesthetic to clear and ensure I did not develop sepsis. Horrendous for many reasons and was very distressing for everyone involved in assisting me. I feel for this poor cow and congratulate Enoch for being such a caring vet that has to be one of the most awful parts of his job

While dissecting cats in high school biology, we found some fetal monsters as well. One kitten in particular had a skull inside a skull where the joint to the neck was where the mouth should be. It didnt reallt have any features a head should have either. It also had a ribcage inside a ribcage and was exceptionally long and thin. Facinating, unfortunate, and educational. Lots and lots of worms as well since the specimens were feral cats.

Because they break and you lose them inside the cow. Which is worse. Also you cannot feel well inside and in this case you enter the vagina and uterus, organs that are less contaminated. Vagina has a good protective flora and pH while the uterus is considered a sterile environment. Gloves are recommended for rectal palpation

Has Pitocin ever been used for procedures such as this one. I know this is a rare happening, but it might be easier to make the cervix open up long enough to get the fetus out. That had to be pain process for the cow, the rancher, and a smelly one for you.
@EnochtheCowVet
@EnochtheCowVet 4 месяца назад
Prostaglandin rather than Oxytocin is the treatment of choice. I had just Artificially Inseminated hundreds of cows for these awesome producers, she had been synchronized and had received prostaglandins 5 days earlier as part of yet synchronization. The cervix had opened as much as it could but needed further mechanical assistance. Great question, but that is exactly what we had done! Cheers!

Fortunately, we can discern a lot about an animal’s comfort or discomfort based on their behavior. Cows aren’t shy about kicking when they’re uncomfortable or in pain (even when they’re in a press to hold them still like this one is). Given that she isn’t kicking or reacting much, it’s safe to guess that she’s not in much discomfort or pain from the procedure, thankfully!

I presume there just aren’t any large animal veterinary hospitals nearby where things like this can be done under GA?
@EnochtheCowVet
@EnochtheCowVet 2 месяца назад
A procedure like this would never be performed under GA. Cows are far too heavy. Their sheer weight injures them if they are recumbent for too long. Even cesareans are performed standing. This was a simple procedure, we just had to keep working along to dilate her cervix. Cheers!
@toomanyopinions8353
@toomanyopinions8353 2 месяца назад
@@EnochtheCowVet I guess I ask because I would assume being under GA would allow you to better manually dilate the cervix (bc no pain & no moving mostly, I guess.). There’s a few manual methods I know they only use on humans under GA. It terms of weight I’ve seen some hospitals will hang a cow upright with belly bands sort of akin to the ones used in the crushes that hoof trimmers utilize, that lift the cows off the ground entirely and support them. So, as if they were standing in position. Obviously though that requires a facility built specifically to handle animals like cows.
@wendymorrison5803

This is outback Australia. Not the farmlands of England. Vets have bases. But generally taking animals in for surgery isn't practical. A spinal block and swift action is better for the animal. This calf was never going to live. It's nature, it happens.
@EnochtheCowVet
@EnochtheCowVet 2 месяца назад
5 hours from home, we were there AIing. Your question is great, but to answer, no veterinarian any where in the world would GA a cow for this procedure or the vast majority of obstetrical cases. Tilt tables are almost exclusively used for foot work to protect the operator and hence the cow and are performed without anesthetic. Cows rumens continue to produce gas and when anesthetized they can’t clear that gas and within a short time they will perish. Great question though! Cheers!
