Our 3 most recent horse auction rescues came with a very contagious disease - Strangles. Thankfully with our protocol no other horses on the farm got sick!
COMMON QUESTIONS:
+ both horses came in infected together and were quarantined before this video was filmed
+ the disease dies quickest in open air, containing the liquid and bringing it out of quarantine violates biosecurity protocol
+ solid surfaces were bleached and the field rested for over 2 months before horses were allowed back in

RH Farm is a Nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, care and rehabilitation of abused, neglected or slaughter bound horses. We accept surrenders, pull from auction and other avenues of rescue. We work very hard to find them a forever home, and a better future.
We are self-funded (as a loss) at the moment. With your donation we can save more horses from slaughter, rehabilitate neglected ponies and help equines in need find the love they deserve.

We rescued a small, very neglected, emaciated, pony w/ hooves so long they curled all the way backwards. He came w/ strangles from an auction, his lesion was in a similar spot and under the jaw, too. He was quarantined well over a month. The vet didn’t expect him to survive, but he was a fighter and did! He is thriving and living his best life now, babysitting all the weaning foals every spring, on a multi million dollar horse farm in Brooksville, FL. Rest of the year, he is free to graze the entire place, not behind any fences. He greets every person who arrives patrols and drives off coyotes.

40 years ago I worked at a big Thoroughbred farm in Ocala, in the farm’s hospital barn. You have not lived until half of your 80 stall barn has a two or three yr old with strangles in it. It’s a process, man! After the initial ‘surprise’ of a few ‘snotty’ horses, the realization hit that we might have a problem. For the next two months every morning feed run was accompanied by a temp check of all 500 horses. (Was handled by each sections’ hoard of grooms; thank goodness that wasn’t my job.) Anyone with an elevated temp got moved to one end of the barn. (Obvs not the gross end.) If their temp got higher they got moved to the gross end. If not after a few days of observation they were turned back out. This was in those pre vax days. There was a shallow bath of bleach outside every stall that we had to step in when entering and leaving the stall. And soooo many gloves. We learned how to make nebulizers out of two liter soda bottles and ace wraps. Hung them off the halters. When a frisky 2 yr old stands utterly still so you can strap weird stuff to their face, you know you have a sick pony. The stuff is gross. Mix wood glue and calk together, then wildly sling it on everything. Including yourself. Drag heaping spoons full down your patients’ faces, muzzles, necks, and legs. Because like all kids they rub their gross noses on their ‘arms’. Have at least 25 miserable horses in various stages of draining, usually from 4 different lymph spots on the same head. We never forced a rupture. Never needed to. But the sound of a horse trying to breathe with lymph nodes that ruptured inwards was truly awful. If you ever wondered why it’s called strangles and not just strep-throat-for-horses, that sound. Nobody died, they just sounded like they might. And we got lucky, no one had it turn into bastard strangles. When they were recovered enough to be turned back out (in a hospital pasture with other recovering kids because we needed the stall,) we had to strip the stall down to the clay, then spray it heavily with bleach, scrub the cinderblock walls with bleach (including scraping all the ‘glue’ off the walls,) and even run a mop dipped in bleach over the stall’s ceiling fan, making sure to soak the blades. Not quite sure why, we were just going to put another strangles victim in there… All in all, I bet half the farm’s horses cycled through there.

We never had horses on our ranch. Vehicles galore but no horses. Equine are interesting creatures. Some of the smaller ranches, 2000 acre spreads, had them. Their equine always seemed to be trying to harm themselves one way or another. Always ripping their hides open or getting some type of infection. Vet bills must have been expensive. It’s good that people like you and your family care for such beasts.

It was absolutely glorious when the vet lanced it! Goop literally shot out and hit the wall, drained without milking for a solid five minutes. It was the most satisfying moment of my entire six years there. ❤ Also the most nauseating - i still get sick when I think of the smell! 🤢

Zeus is a stud, I was so happy to see the instant relief he got. I'd say he handled everything like a Champion!❤

Vet did a fantastic job and your new explanation of the video was pretty good. All the best with Zeus and all the rest of your horses. All the very best from down under sweetie.

Bless you. I’m always amazed by the way horses are traded and moved on by people. I know they’re expensive to keep but I just couldn’t do it.
