Fishing for Goldeye on the Red Deer River! 

Goldeye, walleye and even a sauger awesome! Alberta river valleys are just beautiful 🤙😎

Nice float!! The Red Deer has some great fish when you fish the pools or catch a school like this. I might have thrown a Len Thompson 5 of diamonds out there. I have caught some really nice walleyes & big pike that were in feeding on those schools. Even the odd gold eye would hit the same lure. Do the same thing on the Bow River,,, especially around the forks. There are 12 lb walleye in there right now that it’s cooling down. It’s great working the transition between the very clear Old Man river waters meet the muddy Bow River waters. It’s a distinct line, but you have to have a motor to actively fish that area. I haven tried electric motors as I’m not sure they have enough thrust. You can float to there with a Kayak, or paddle out to the break and anchor. There’s some healthy currents there mind you. The Old Man flows hard into there. Gold eye are rare in there, but I have caught them, walleye, pike to over 40”, sauger, suckers, and I have seen 4ft plus sturgeons launching themselves out of the water there. I may have accidentally caught sturgeon bait fishing as once in a while I hook up, lose a bunch of line & snap off!! 😂😂. One time I had a sturgeon jump right where my line was so that was very likely, but I haven’t landed even a sa all sturgeon in my life, so can only assume. You can go in there and catch a lot,,, & you can go the next time and wonder where the fish are!! It’s running south there & the east side (that you can’t access, is a hole where some linkers sit, but it’s muddy Bow River water so harder to catch them in there. I wish I lived nearer the Red Deer river, I have fished it 6 times and did very well each time. No giants, but some great walleye & pike specifically. You did great this day once things picked up!! That make for a fun float with a bunch of good guys!! 😊😊

Crazy, it looked like there were some shallow spots, but obviously, some deeper pockets where you were connecting on fish. The goldeye really shot off like rockets when you released them. 20 in that pool is wild!

Never seen a Goldeye before I thought maybe it was a Whitefish but the mouth was definitely different. Nice day floating that river. Seeing you catching those walleye was making me hungry for a fish dinner. Great video Sean !

Goldeye are beauty fish. I’ve been told best way to eat them is smoked. Gonna save some this winter and maybe try.

Great action! Id love to get goldeyes on lures. The rivers I catch them have almost zero visibility. Worms gets the job done. That sauger was a stunner! Nice size too!

With the red deer being such a shallow river you really have to focus your fishing on those deeper pools. Nice video Sean!

Beautiful area indeed, last time i tried for goldeye there, river was low and weather was hot, slow bite for sure. Goldeye is fun to catch, but man is tastes terrible (and i've eaten carp most of my younger ears lol)

any moon eye.that looks like your around drumheller or east of there.went fishing to lake macgregor last week,man it has dropped water level.i could walk out a few more feet from were i normally stand.

great video, where did you start and exit? i want to start at the Tolman Bridge, but exut points im not sure of been my lifetime dream to do a multi day float fish and camp 🏕 down there. and smoked gold eye is awsome

Never seen anything like that first fish before. Looked a bit like a dog fish. Good job your a float on the water as it took a while to contact the fish. That would be a lot harder on foot from the bank. Unlike you when we hit plentiful fish we would switch the lure. Try and find out more about what we use. Its more about building a box of confidence. So if the first few lures fail, we don't suddenly think. SHIT I am going to have a tough day. We can't afford a negative. But what a way to spend a few hours drifting down that river with all those fish. Oh don't much fancy your lunch box mate. Chicken and a canny for me.
