Thanks for watching! Which of the hooks did you like best?

I like a 2 prong fishing spear with barbs. Or the 4 prong simple fish spear. I would try the thorns made into a trouble hook in winter with a tip up for pike fishing. Pike are greedy and likely to swallow a small trouble hook.

I have the animal bones AND the locust trees on my farm. I think if a fish swallows the bone hook, that might give it trouble and work for catching it. I’d like to try both, though, and see what happens. Thanks!

Some great ideas for homemade fishhooks! Look forward to seeing how you make out catching fish with them. I'm going to have to agree with you on your favorite. It's simple and small which may prove more likely to catch fish.

I was shown by natives here how to fish like this, either Thorns or Bone hooks and sinew to tie and for the line, I can confirm you can catch fish like this, the natives here have been doing it 50000+ years. Great work Lilly

That bone fish hook looks like it might be pretty effective. When it comes to thorn hooks, the green briars that grow in the part of West Virginia where I used to live would probably be effective also. The thorns are very sharp and the vines are extremely tough, almost like Nature's barbed wire.

In the tool tube part of your fishing kit, would you consider adding a small lockblade, and a small multitool, such as a Gerber Dime? Their smaller size would give you greater control of the blades, and the small pair of needlenose pliers in the Dime would allow you a very firm grip on things you are working on.

After watching all your videos of making primitive tools for survival. I see there is a significant amount of time to make various things someone needs for survival. Days to make a shelter. Hours of searching for the best woods to make a bow drill. Including a plow drill. Hunting a deer may take weeks or months. Small animals may be easier. But, no guarantees you will get that rabbit either. I came to the realization that if humans ever have to live as primitive humans did thousands of years ago. There's going to be a lot of people that will not survive.

I used to carry a wine cork, some fishing line and a couple of hooks. It's small and very light weight.
@pek5117
@pek5117 2 года назад
I used to carry that in scouts, the hooks can be stuck into the cork, you can wrap a lot of line around the cork and the cork acts as the float. Fits in your pocket and you can feed yourself with it.

That "Black Locust" tree that you pointed out in this video is one of the finest woods in the world for bows. It's still Winter so the trees are low in sap making this the best time to harvest. When you harvest immediately strip the bark and apply glue onto the ends so that it does not dry too fast risking unwanted splitting. Get a nice one 4 to 6 inch across. When you are ready to carve the bow this Summer split it in quarter sections. Shave the back of the bow to the same growth ring and then cut on the sides and back last.
@SurvivalLilly

@@SurvivalLilly You are welcome, however, I must make a correction. The last sentence you should cut the "belly" of the bow last. I blame my error on my age... 60. Good carving!

Remember in a survival situation make lots of fishing rods hooks bait etc... 20 fishing rods may only catch 1 fish. That is all you need each day. Catch 20 fish and you can cook all 20 and have food for 20 days. You may need to smoke the fish for long term storage.

Growing up on a reservation making these as a kid we would tie small lizards or larger insects to the hooks. Those little pieces of the cordage you cut off work perfect if you leave about 2”+ of the tag end. Lizard’s if you get them out far enough in the water they can’t go anywhere or get tangled up it’s an easy lunch for the fish

I never thought of a goat head as a fish hook. But it could be. Goat heads are a hard thorny seed pod. They resemble a goat head with horns.
@danieljones2183

Those big hooks might be good for catfish. Burying them in some stinky meat might be enough to hide the cordage. I think the little bones will be the most effective. Can't wait for fishing season.

@willownoel5017

Actually, you use a slack line and allow the fish to completely swallow the bait and begin to swim away. Once in the fish's stomach the toggle wedges sideways and can't pull out and you pull your fish in. If you try to pull the fish in while the bait is still in it's mouth it will likely spit it out and get away.

It's great to see Stone Age technology being prepared like that. And I bet having them ready beforehand is useful. But I do wonder, wouldn't in an actual sudden crisis situation a trap make more sense? Not neccessarily a basket trap, just trapping the fish in an area by stacking stones and such (obviously depends on the size of the body of water we're talking about). Because the effort in finding the materials to make, and then actually make the fishhooks, and finding bait, seems to be about the same as stacking a bunch of stones that are almost certainly going to be laying around the creek anyway. And fishing takes skill, while snatching one from a restrained area seems more likely for someone without that skill. I'm sure you and most of your audience won't have that kind of problem though.
