I LOVE how you show us when things don't go quite right or don't work. So many other survival and bushcrafting channels make things look deceptively easy, which can be a problem for beginners who are watching it and trying to apply it. It can become discouraging when you try what they do and it doesn't work. Seeing you have trouble with it actually makes experimenting less discouraging, because it's a reminder that that's part of the process.

When using a dead-fall trap it's important to consider the weight of the target animal. Generally, the dead-fall should be about three to five times the weight of the target.
@DivergentDroid

How's that work when you have no clue what animal is gonna spring the trap?
@FiltyIncognito
@FiltyIncognito 2 года назад
@@DivergentDroid Know the local animals and their diet and pick your bait appropriately, the location you're setting the trap (proximity to burrow sites, game trails or food and water sources) and the clearance to get to the bait.
@DivergentDroid
@DivergentDroid 2 года назад
@@FiltyIncognito Sure you can do that guesswork and hope you can dial it in but still anything can set off the trap. If I lived there I'd use such a trap if I had no other options and when they asked me about it I'd tell them sure I may have crippled a few animals but so what, I lived, would you rather I had died? I'd tell them to stick it where the Sun don't shine.

Ideally your trap should lift the captured animal from the ground, so that some other animal doesn't come along and easily steal your catch. I was shown how to make one on a jungle survival course in Belize by a 'local' call Winston; he knew his stuff. The meat of the trap is a bent over tree and a snare; once triggered, the snare - attached to the bent over tree (obviously a thin one) - straightens and your prey is lifted from the ground.

You can also cut narrow and deep grooves in the bait stick. Mash your bait into the grooves so the animal has to work harder to get all the bait. That will help the less sensitive traps to trigger.

Your Paiute deadfall trap demonstration has gotten me interested in finding other traps used by native Americans. Lots of tribes exist. The Quapaw, Shawnee and Choctaw tribes lived in the State I live. I'll see what kind of deadfall traps were made around where I live. Would like to see what the Apache, Nez Pierce and Cherokee made. A friend of mine is 100% Lakota Sioux Indian. Taught me about how to make a Lakota Sioux style bow. It takes almost 3 years to make one. Using "Osage Orange" wood. Sometimes called "Bois d'Arc" wood. Osage Orange is not the tree that produces the fruit called oranges. Choose at least 100 sticks to be possible bows. Make a fire and burn the wood until grey ash is remaining. Put all the Osage Orange or Bois D'Arc wood in the wood ashes completely surrounding the bow wood. Bury the bows with dirt to season the wood in the ashes. Let soak for two years. Then shape the bow. It takes almost three years to make a Lakota Sioux Indian bow. But, they last forever.

@whomagoose6897
@whomagoose6897 2 года назад
@@SurvivalLilly There may be some differences in the traps used. All the American Indian tribes are more like sovereign nations into themselves. All with different languages. Cherokee language is completely different from Choctaw language. The Souix language was similar but not exactly like the Crow nation. Kind of like the difference between Spanish and Italian. I know the Navajo language is one the hardest languages to learn. Instead of using sound combinations as diphthongs to make words like most languages. Navajo uses changes in pitch to make a word. For example, the sound of the word "tree" represents tree no matter the pitch of the sound in most languages. In the Navajo language if you say tree with a high pitch note, then the same word in a tenor note, then again in a bass pitch. You have three different words. One of the most fascinating things was the ability to use natural plants as medicine. Willow bark as a pain reliever. One plant was used for menstrual cramps. Another was used to control infection. They had an impressive lifestyle. One was the opinion that land is the same as air that we breathe. You cannot own air, and, one cannot own land. Just to utilize the resources as needed. Like an animal cannot be owned. They can be used as a resource as food. An amazing group of people.

I have made a similar trep using cordage from willow branches or grass. I never used to catch anything but it worked well. If u replace the trigger bottom branch with rope and have the trigger like a small hook in bait and just hooked on the horisontal leg srick its much more sensitive. So more like the second trap.

All traps on land are illegal in my country too (Australia). If you are stranded and desperate they will not prosecute because there was a legitimate survival need, but if it is not a real life or death scenario the fines are huge, possible prison time.

Great direction there. I learned to make these when I was a kid and these types of traps do require some practice to get the "Feel" of it, but they have a long history of effectiveness. With the figure four, I learned to loosely tie it at the intersections when setting it then just remove the ties when you have the right tension and the trap is stable. With both traps, try to attach the bait in such a fashion that the animal has to work a little to get it free. It makes a big difference. These types are also very prone to inclement weather so you should check them more often if you have wind and/or precipitation. Best of Days.

I think the notch at the 90 degree crossing on the 4 trap was too tight. You don't want the other surfaces rubbing but only real contact on the 2 faces that are in compression/opposition and which need to be very square. If the other faces rub, then it can stick. So carve the other "contact" faces back 1-2 millimeters until they don't make contact.

Not in the US. In the US anything is legal in a true survival situation. Examples. wanna call for help without a license on a borrowed Ham rig.. go for it. Wanna shoot cook and eat any animal out of season with non regulation gear or license.. go for it.

In a survival situation I would consider nothing illegal - even dynamite if necessary!
@FiltyIncognito
@FiltyIncognito 2 года назад
It's been awhile since I last read about it but I think that there are special considerations for life&death situations. Either way, the fines are more of an economic countermeasure to economic or leisure motivated hunting. If you're at risk of dying, the threat of a few fines isn't going to stop you from trying to preserve your life. But purposely putting yourself into a survival situation like going out into the wilds with the intent of surviving on trapped game probably won't do you any favors in court.
@DivergentDroid
@DivergentDroid 2 года назад
@@Jimwill01 Yeah in the US I can see that but Australia.. Cop: How did you stop your attacker? Man: I shot him with my gun. Cop: You are going to jail. - There has to be some legal way out of the madness but I don't know what it is. They cannot expect you to Not survive simply because they have a law against a trap. Say you broke 5 animals backs that all got away causing them to live painful lives but the one you did catch and kill caused you to live.. are their courts really gonna condemn me for doing what I needed to do to survive? I would hope not but if they let that slide they would have to let the guy with the gun slide too and something tells me that's not gonna happen. I know a lady who swears Australia is a Paradise. Her words, she meant it. She says there is tons of (I'll quote her last msg) " gold iron, copper, titanium, uranium, opal, coal, theres free universal medicine, nobody actually has to work if they dont feel like it, and there beaches. And you CAN have a gun .. but only what you fellas would call single action guns. No pistols and no automatics! those are military only" - Her exact words. She fails to see when the government comes for her, she'll be defenseless. That's how brainwashed many of these folks are.

I remember an animal trap they showed us in school... it was a large log section with a 1 inch hole carved about 2 inches deep, it had 3 nails protruding on an angle towards each other into the hole. A piece of shiny foil and/or food bait was placed into the bottom of the hole. The premise being that an animal would stick it's paw in and it would get stuck by the nails effectively trapping it.
