This video shows how to catch ballyhoos, little needle like fish often find swimming close to the surface in Caribbean waters. Also, you can see how to use them as a bait to catch a bigger fish.
Video is recorded in Playa Pesquero beach in Cuba, Holguin province in Dec 2018.

can''t wait to go back. i love fishing on the beach. seem like a really nice place to fish lot of structures. my usual go to place is cayo coco, it's a bit more difficult to find those reef there , at least in my usual hotel.

Thank you so much for this video, you can't believe how grateful I am. I was fishing in Playa Pesquero in August of 2018, and only caught wrasse and parrot fish. It was my first time fishing in salt water. I was expecting to catch Ballyhoo and other larger species, however I couldn't find any videos on showing how to. I am going to Iberostar in July and then hopefully I will catch more species. And just to clarify what did you put on the hook shrimp or doughnut? Thanks

Thanks Marco. I used both shrimp an doughnut. Sometimes they prefer one, sometimes another. Key is to use very small hooks (number 18 or at minimum 16), keep the bait very close to the surface and use very thin diameter line. And then just throw some bread close to your bait and they will show up. I didn't show this on the video, but ballyhoo will very often take and immediately spit the bait if it is too big or they find something that bothers them.

Do you have a contact for fishing chartered near Playa Pesquero? Did you try Mangrove fishing?

I do not have their telephone number but what you can do is ask for the number of marina in Hotel, call them and ask to book deep sea fishing with captain Antonio. No I didn't try Mangrove fishing.
