What a catch ... My 9 year old and I missed our fishing charter by 10 minutes... He was devastated for a moment but then we decided to stay at the harbor and try our luck... I'm glad we missed the boat because a whole new world of fishing opened up. Towards the end of day he started casting at the Davey's Locker dock by Western Pride boat and he caught 4 different species in less than an hour. We'll be back next week and taking tips from your videos. That spot with the old tree is really neat. HB born n raised here but never explored the Newport harbor like that 🤙
my favorite fishing in Newport Bay was fishing the docks from the shore and seawall when I was a kid. we lived at Balboa Island till I was about eleven and early morning was magic time for me. we had pretty clunky gear at the time lol Truline blank fishing rods and Penn reels. this was in the early 70's. when I grew older about ten years later I worked the same water with my bass rod and Bantam 150 at night and just hammered them. moved up to Oregon a few years later and now I'm glad to see that its still pretty good fishing. I want to come down and get some this fall lol!
Is this the area close to the Balboa Fun Zone and the Bay island? I was curious because i always have a hard time parking here and was curious where u posted up haha.
Hi there! Yep that's the general area. I usually just drive around till I find parking. Sometimes I get lucky and it's close to the water, sometimes I don't get as lucky and have to walk a bit. Typically it's tougher to find parking during the summer as opposed to wintertime.
Hi Kevin. Lol..Not too far. It's good all along the stretch from the Wedge up to 15th. Seems to me they are holding from middle bay up to the back bay. Water is a bit warmer.
Hi Lorenzo. The locals are cool for the most part. Sometimes you'll run into a grumpy home/boat owner. Just be courteous, use common sense, don't hit their boat with your lures and it's typically no issues.
Newbie subscribed! Nice catch! I sent you private msg in your fb Phil! What is the best tide for fishing in Newport bay? I am a newbie, skunked last 2 trips, lost quite few tackles into the rocks, my confidence kind of low 😢
Right on Carl! Good tides today. The water is looking really good, a lot better than it was when we were getting all the rain. Good luck out there, I will probably be fishing today as well. Maybe I'll see you out there...lol 👍
My best understanding is that you can legally fish below the high tide line from the actual shoreline. Mainly, because this is considered the ocean and no one owns the ocean. Don't quote me on that though...lol. It's illegal to fish from the private docks themselves without permission. So definitely stay off the docks themselves and be courteous to the homeowners when fishing around boats and in front of their homes and usually you are good to go.
