Love the fiskars axes. The old axe profile looks like it's for chopping trees down not splitting. That's the big difference.

You hit your other axe and caused that chip... 10:12 you hit it exactly where you showd the dent. I split 40+ cords a year with this axe for easily 5 years during college. My (built in the 1920's) rental only had a wood burning stove. My dad bought almost this exact axe for me 20+ years ago, and I've learned a few things. First, sharpen it up. Take a good honing stone and just go to town. Keep that tip sharp as a razor, and you will be surprised that it will NEVER bounce off wood. I would split 3-4+ year seasoned cherry and oak this way. I don't have good form (we're about the same size and shape, lol) so it can only be the axe. Now I want to go use mine...

The difference between a chopping axe and splitting/maul is huge. It's crazy how easy it is to split the small stuff with the splitting axe or maul.

I always used a 6lb. splitting axe with a hickory handle never had a problem I used it for 45 years until my nephew thought he needed it

I split 42 face cords a year of oak, hickory and white ask with a Fiskars x 27 in combination with the iso core 8 lb splitting maul. No gas powered log splitter for me.

Fiskars scissors are widely used in Scandinavia. Somewhat more expensive than a lot of throwayay junk, these daily users are just 10/10 perfect decade after decade.

Great Vid and a delight to see you're enjoying the 25" version! If your buddy has the 27" version ask him to let you give it a try. One suggestion would be to set the target rounds on a much lower to the ground stump or round not more than just a few inches thick. The increased velocity of the downstroke with the 27" version will amaze you. Plus, it's slightly longer handle allows you to stand a bit further back so there's less likelihood of swinging through (and hitting your foot or leg) should you miss your target spot. Finally, the hollow handle really does absorb plenty of vibration and almost eliminate any hand sting should you overstrike a piece.

Its a 28" and 36". The model is x25 and x27. But yeah, the bigger one is my preference also. Ive got both.

@basicfit287 I'm 5'10". I usually split with the rounds on the ground, and I prefer the extra reach. On a block, I tend to grab the shorter handles. If I had to pick only one, it would be the x27

Yep, I used a regular axe like the one you had for the better part of 30 years while splitting wood. Broke the handle and had been hearing about this Fiskar axes so thought I'd give it a try. I can't tell you how many rounds I've split with the Fiskars that I would have bet money were impossible to split, and they would have been with a regular axe. My X27 is, by far, the best splitting axe I've ever had.

I have to cut 17 inch seasoned oak splits down to 10-12 inch lengths to use in an offset. Would a chopping axe or splitting axe work better to take the ends off?

As you pointed out, that wooden handled axe is a felling axe, not intended for splitting wood, but for chopping down trees. Sure makes you appreciate your hydraulic log splitter huh? 🙂

Form when splitting is overrated, generating speed is most important no matter how you swing. I used a x27 when I split by hand and it work great although I never use a chopping block. As for warranty you now ship the broken one back and they send you a new one. I have broke a few but one had split 150 full cord before it broke.

HEY...5'10" is not short stature in Portland Oregon! 🤬 Depending on which 7-11 store I am 6' to 6'2" walking out! 🤣 I am more comfortable and accurate with the x25 over the x27 which is eight inches longer.

great video. I grew up splitting wood for our household (I still hate splitting wood) and I have used many different axes and mauls. I also have a small side business sharpening knives and tools and I have seen a lot of Fiskars products. I think the design, ergonomics, material quality and overall build quality is really good with Fiskars, but I have never once seen a brand new Fiskars tool that was acceptably sharp - even their scissors. I would highly recommend that you sharpen that axe as fine as you can. An axe doesnt need to be like a razor, but a sharp axe will reduce the bounces you get with green wood. As far as the small chip goes, I think this is pretty common with a lot of blades of all sorts. Commonly these tools are ground and sharpened by higher speed machines in the factory that can draw the temper out a bit. I would expect that sharpening the axe bit sufficiently will 1) fix the chip, and 2) remove the steel that is heat treated less ideally, thus leaving you with a bit that is properly hardened and will accept sharpening and endure without further issue.

@@TKCL I want to clarify that you should sharpen the bit by hand with files and stones. It will be quite a chore the first time (or two) but routine hand sharpening with stones will be an easy task after that.

I've got 2-X27s and 1-X25. The edges aren't exactly rugged. But for the price, who cares? I've split about 6 cords this year with my older one so far, and I haven't touched it up. I've got expensive splitters, medium priced splitters, and several older ones of various shapes. The x27 is the one I grab 90% of the time. I haven't found anything that works better yet.

I have a Fiskars X27 , X11 , and 3 X7 hatchets. For the money they can't be beat. The X27 is a wood splitting fool. I use the X7 daily. No problems. Made in Finland 🇫🇮.

That is work . Sorry but if going to split wood. The Axis is a lot.easier for same results. I know it’s expensive but worth it. Hard Working Man did a review of different types of splitters. Good review thou not manual splitting. Fishers is good product.

I did not buy this for majorwood splitting, it's to replace my campfire axes. Hydraulic log splitters are the ultimate way to go.

I am smaller than you by three inches. I prefer a 36" handle as it gives me much more power. I prefer a 5 lb axe head designed for splitting but able to do chopping if needed. That fiskars performs similar to my double bits (chopping bits). Great for small stuff but not for big rounds. I would be upset at how hard it was to split the big rounds. I work with lots of 24" Dia. White oak. But have worked with everything in VA. Tree fellers use 28 to 24 inch axes because they need the length to drive a wedge and are too cumbersome if longer. They are perfect for limbing trees.

Did you find the blade was sharp when you purchased this axe? Fiskars claims these blades come razor sharp from the factory. Mine certainly wasn't, neither were the other Fiskars axes for sale in the big box store. Thanks for the honest video. Yup, I too had it with replacing wooden handles on my axes. Bought me the complete line of Fuskars axes. They break, Fiskars replaces! Damn good deal! 🍁🍻

I now own a pile of Fiskars products, none have ever came Razor sharp. I personally don't want that at it has a tendency to chip if you make contact with something very hard.

I love my Fiskars Splitting Axe. I can also say 100% anything Fiskars if it breaks they replace it no questions asked. I had a pair of there scissors that went dule and thought yeah right they are going to say "normal wear and tear" nope they sent out a brand new pair. Fiskars is all I buy now even tho it cost a little extra there warranty is unbeatable.

Yes we do, sitting by a fire right now. Almost every afternoon of the week from September to April. The only time we don't if it's raining or hot. I burn several chords a year.

Weight and head shape is different. Typically mauls are very heavy for busting up full rounds. The axe is less labor intensive and better for busted pieces and final work down of busted rounds. Hope I answered your question.

I have the same one and like it a lot. I looked at the x25 and the x27 at the store. The x25 seemed like it fit me better at the store, but after splitting with it, I think the extra few inches of the x27 would work better for me. I'm 5'11.

ONLY thing is the X27 is a 36” axe. Because of that length it’s safer. Almost impossible to hit yourself. With a 29” axe you can definitely hit yourself in the shin. Many people have died by striking themselves in the shin, and bled out in a remote field. My friend’s grandpa died that way in a far part of their property chopping, and passed out from blood loss before he made it back to the ranch house. He was found dead.

If I were splitting a lot of firewood I'd definitely have the x27. I mainly split small pieces around our fire pit and use a small axe to bust stubborn pieces apart while using my log splitter.

Very impressed with the performance compared to the traditional axe ,I usually fall towards tradition .However this shows a pretty significant change in technology and research with the new axe head shape and size. Not impressed with the edge so much though.. But I'm certain I'd have to maintain an edge on a traditional axe as well ..Sooooooooo Overall amazing informative video.Thanks again Andrew!✌️🇺🇸✌️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🌳

I’ve split way more wood with a single bit ax than with a wood splitter or a wedge, but it was nice and dry, super seasoned, and I’d aim for the “checking/chinking” cracks…. Funny thing, splitting firewood seemed to be the easy part, moving the wood to be splitted, and then stacking it wore me out

Seasoned makes a huge and satisfying difference. I hate moving wood myself, especially large rounds.
