As we approach late fall in North Texas, I thought I would share a recent project. My goal was to build a lower cost reel mower to allow me to transition from my rotary mower. I wanted something that would last a few years and cost less than the commercially available reel mowers available. While there are many videos out there showing a similar conversion, few offers a parts list.
Budget was my primary concern. There are components that may be more robust than used below, they come with a higher price. I am using Amazon affiliate links that offer me a small referral fee, these links do not increase your cost.
It goes without saying, but any modification of your mower will void the factory warranty. Have fun with the project. I will do my best to answer any questions.
Base Mower. Fiskars StaySharp 18". I picked up a used one on Facebook marketplace. I found one in fantastic shape with a little rust on the bolts. Average cost $30
Power Source. I am using Ryobi 40v batteries. I had these already from my weed eater/edger. I assume you will use ones you already have as well. Free for me. $125 if you have to buy
Battery Adapter. Make sure you get the right one for your batteries. $20

Speed Controller. This is the most fragile part of the build. Do not turn the in with the power set anywhere but the lowest setting. I do not recommend running this over 65% and no longer than 30 minutes. I usually let my unit cool down after 30 minutes. I am not sure if this is required, but it seems to help the longevity of the part. $16
