Yeah, that's a hefty price tag. This is a pretty inexpensive conversion. However I am going to look into building a larger battery pack that will provide more amp hours. When the grass gets really thick or long, the battery drain gets really bad on these smaller batteries.

Cool idea. Although the more weight, the better if you are looking to lay down some stripes. Maybe duct tape some 25s to the top of the mower and beef up that battery to a dewalt fkexvolt. Then you can swap between 20v and 60v to see what works best

It's a nice conversion, I would say if you are going to paint it, maybe restore it to those McLane colours. If you know someone who can print the decals, replace the worn ones too.I would suggest some kind of cover for the motor also taking into account the motor''s cooling path regarding air flow direction when doing that so you can keep the grass and dirt out of it.

Has that speed controller held up to regular use with that motor, from what i can tell that controller isn't rated for the 1000w that the motor is. I have seen a bunch of reviews on inexpensive speed controllers and people saying they fail easily.
@JohnsonMotorsports
@JohnsonMotorsports Год назад
I’ve had to replace a few, but I have found 1 on Amazon that has held up. You have to check the specs on the speed controllers to make sure the amp draw maximum & continuous is enough.

I'm on the fence with a conversion. I am torn between a robotic mower (Husq) or SunJoe electric reel. Are you cutting bermuda? Nice work!
@JohnsonMotorsports
@JohnsonMotorsports Год назад
Sorry I missed this message. Yes, I'm cutting Bermuda. I like the electric conversion, but it does have it's down sides. If my grass gets to thick. I start to have issues with battery drain. The harder that motor has to work, the more AMPs it pulls from the battery. Which means I end up having to charge again, just to finish the front year. Also, if you don't have a large enough amp hour battery, it can cause you to discharge to battery to much and then you have issues with the Battery management system allowing the battery to recharge. Currently, I am looking into building my own battery pack that will provide a lot more amp hours.
@blakedunc235
@blakedunc235 Год назад
If you don't mind me asking I've got pretty thick Bermuda and I've got a McLane and two 6Ah and one 4Ah Ryobi batteries, but about how long do you think that would get me assuming the amp usage is equal to your setup?

I'd like to do this conversion but I really want to keep the drive functionality. How much would the motor placement and design need to change if you were to keep the drive functionality?
@JohnsonMotorsports
@JohnsonMotorsports Год назад
Actually, my drive functionality is still intact. The issue you will have with running the drive wheels is the battery drain. You can think of this just like you would cutting really thick or tall grass. The more torque required in the motor will draw more amps and decrease battery usage. So if you plan to run drive wheels you may want to look into running batteries in parallel to extend amp hours.

I’ve been looking at doing this with one of my PGM 22, my concern is the weight of the mower and the drive system being too much for this conversion. I mow everyday with the PGMs on my golf green so it’s mowing very short amounts of grass
@JohnsonMotorsports
@JohnsonMotorsports Год назад
Not sure on that one. I don’t use the drive system anymore. However an electric mower can put out a crazy amount of torque, my concern with using the drive system would be the amp draw for additional torque needed. You would need a higher capacity battery.
@malarkeywithmatt2396

@@JohnsonMotorsports yea that makes sense, I’ve seen some 60-80v brushless motor kits with controllers and such for a moped conversions maybe that’d be a good route.
@JohnsonMotorsports
@JohnsonMotorsports Год назад
@@malarkeywithmatt2396 Well, the battery voltage isn’t really the issue. My 40V motor will spin at 3600 RPMs and it will produce more torque then the Honda engine. What you really need is a larger battery pack. I’m building a E-bike battery pack from mine which should be 40V and roughly 15 ah. The 15 amp hours is what you really need, especially if you are using a lot of torque.
