Workout motivation can be… a little hard to come by sometimes. Finding that little piece of inspiration that gives you fitness motivation, and then STAYING motivated to work out and keep up with a healthy lifestyle… that’s even harder to come by. The concept of “motivation” is pretty elusive, especially when you’re talking about something so random as workout motivation, or fitness motivation, or even just healthy lifestyle motivation. In this video I share 5 tips for getting motivated to workout, and a few tricks that make it easier to STAY motivated (which is the hardest part!)

What inspired me to get out there and walk almost every day was getting the news that my blood sugar was high and my cholesterol was high and I have pre-diabetes. If I don't do something I'll have diabetes soon. I don't want to have to do insulin shots if I don't have to. So, the next morning I started out with a short 10 min walk around the little block near my house. Did that again that afternoon. Did that for a week, twice a day. Went a bit farther the next week, twice a day. Got MyFitnessPal on my phone. Got a Garmin activity monitor as a gift from my brother who was worried about my health. I'm now doing at least 30 mins walks a few times a week with some 1 to 2 hour walks in the large natural park nearby to our area. I have walking poles to help myself over the roots, rocks and gravel that I might trip on. Music helps on the shorter, neighbourhood walks. My husband helps on some walks to give somebody to talk to and share things with. But it's a case of, if I don't do it, I will pay for it with my long term health consequences. That's motivation enough. Sometimes you just need a huge wake up call like that. I'm 249 lbs now, down from 265 lbs 8 weeks ago. So, it's coming off. Eating well, feeling healthy and happy. I sleep better, my eczema on my back has cleared up, my numbness in my feet and toes has gone away, I can walk up the stairs without huffing and puffing and I know I'm doing the right thing. Good on you for helping show us it can be fun to get out there and get motivated. Keep up the good work!! Maybe a video about medical conditions that may necessitate exercise or that exercise would really help? And why it'd help.
@debbiestaneland231
@debbiestaneland231 6 лет назад
Addendum. I don't let myself talk myself out of my walk. First thing as soon as I get up, I get dressed, have a drink of water, a bite of fruit or oatmeal then go. Even though it's dark out. The only days I'm not going out are the days when I know my husband and I are going to do a long walk in the Gatineau Park later that morning. Habit does trump motivation. So absolutely true, right there.

I have tried jogging multiple times in the past but I never continued doing it. After watching this video (and installing the Couch to 5K app (which is absolutely brilliant) about two hours ago I now find myself feeling energetic after my first run in ages. Each time I have started jogging earlier I have been motivated, but I never felt the motivation this strong. Thank you!

One way i keep myself most motivated is a motivation board, i hung a cork board in my kitchen and wrote my goals out as well as my before and after pictures to date. That keeps me on track almost always. Another i stay motivated is with reward, like if i can workout x amount of days and maintain my healthy eating i can treat myself. (normally a message or pedicure, there my favorite). Those two things have helped immensely. So excited to see what is ahead for this channel, thank you for sharing with us!! :)

You motivated me to run once (30 mins) per week, now also workout twice (30 mins) per week! I am slim and I easily get tired doing my job (I'm a violin student). I realized I need more and stronger arm muscles to be able to bear the 3-hour daily practicing without getting injured, so I watch your video to motivate myself, like previously with running.

Great video...again. :) These are great tips. Keeping motivational signs or prompts all around me really helps me. I have to change them out often but that keeps me on my toes as well. I also have to have it on paper and physically put a check mark on each workout I complete.

Hi Caty! I've been enjoying your videos for awhile now and it has kept me motivated not only physically but also mentally✨. I got to admit, it has been difficult for me to start a new healthy lifestyle and staying fit in general. But after watching your videos, I am more determined and inspired to continue being healthy despite the obstacles I will have to face. I loveee your videos & I hope you continue making more of them to be a role model to people like me ☺️ And as a video suggestion, could you please do a beginner workout routine or a beginner workout guide for us beginners😅? I've always wanted to start working out but whenever I do, I am lost and do not know what I am doing nor whether it's right or wrong. Therefore, you could be a big help to me and others who are in the same position as me😄. Thank you! 💜

I love the google planning idea! I always write it down somewhere but seem to lose track and that is such a more organized method haha. Also I have started going to yoga classes they offer on base and I absolutely love it! (Not naked though)😂 My tip is probably an obvious one but it is just to be persistent. Back home I was going to college, working a job, and still found time to go to the gym. Starting working out is always the hardest part; those first couple of weeks. After I got into the routine of it though it started to become something I really enjoyed and it was a way I was able to release stress from work or school.
@CatyCulp
@CatyCulp 6 лет назад
Totally! I used to write everything out by hand, but I'm super scatter-brained, and I would always lose the sheets of paper I'd write things down on hahaha. Having a virtual place to keep everything that I can access right from my phone is perfect! And YES! Persistence is totally key!

Hey I recently found your channel as a young kid and teen I loved running I've won medals in competitions in first place and used go be faster running in school as growing up and leaving school early I don't do it often unless I'm chasing after my nephew or an emergency I'm a husky owner so I'm always on walks and even do urban mushing but my girl got out the other night an a ran to get the dig whistle and I acatully sprinted for the first time in ages and it felt good I'm a been a smoker for about 3 years bit surprising don't really effect me as much as you would think. But most times I find it easy to run in the dark I don't know why I'm not tired etc but sometimes during the day I just feel like crap and can't run so it's confusing. Also the thing is I'm have anxiety and few other things and I find it awkward if I pass someone while running but I don't want to :). Also do you have a dog ? If you can make a video of you runing with your dog and tips etc or just anything I think it may help I don't see any new videos or really any at all with running with there dogs etc :(
@CatyCulp
@CatyCulp 5 лет назад
I do have a dog! She loves running with me. And runs are tricky! Sometimes they're easy to do, and sometimes they're a lot harder. A lot of it depends on what you're eating, when the last time you exercised was, how much sleep you're getting, etc. It's mainly all about consistency. If you can run a little bit every day or every other day, it becomes so much easier.

The word motivation is a demotivation. Same with saying “your own will power” because you’re putting the focus on that single person. They themself are already messed up by not being in that routine already. and putting the focus on them is only going to make them shy away. You need to make them believe in a certain action. if you can’t do it, those words are just hollow shells ready to crumble. Don’t focus on a motivation. Just realize what you’re doing is damaging. And if you can’t see that then you need to work on yourself. Be happy with yourself, because you can lose any kind of weight and then gain it back in the next month. Work on yourself emotionally, fuck those words “inspiration” “motivation” “will power”. Focus on you and stop trying to hype yourself up. You’re not a dog about to go on a damn walk or car ride. If you can’t think about doing some thing, and then just do it bcus it’s a good idea. Then you need to cut everything out. And focus on yourself. This is a serious attitude you need to have. Find the problem, understand it, work on it and then solve it. Kinda like the cluttered home. That’s some true shit man. When you wake up and make your bed, it sets a precedent for the day. Find what’s binding you up. And take it down.
