Our wild camping tour of the North Coast 500 made me realise that we didn't have enough 12v sockets. So here is a video of me fitting them to Herman.

Just found this, (years late)! Great idea, we're always squabbling over our one usb port! The latest version has the volt meter between the twin usb sockets and the third blank is now a power switch. It also comes pre-wired, so good improvements.

Never too late, Lorez. Will you be fitting an extra USB port?

Nice vídeo. Just one thing. That looks to me like a 2,5 sq mm cable. May be ok for a 10 amp current but never for a 20 amp. And we shouldn't forget that in DC the capability of a cable to conduct current decreases with length. Just give you an example; the heating element i fitted on the waste water tank uses 30 watts Max, that's less than 3 amps. But because i had to use almost 7 meters of cable from the battery to the heating element, i had to use a 4 sq mm cable.

Desmond had to many spot lights. We swapped out two of them for double USB ports. Well worth doing :-)

Great video thanks. If you were going for your plan A and connecting straight to the leisure battery, would you need a fuse box? I have found a usb, 12 volt socket with a integral on off switch. Also what would one use the volt meter for?

Hi Kahlo, thanks for watching. Yes you'd need an inline fuse to protect whatever you've plugged in to the USB and the wire. The fuse is the weak spot in the circuit so if some goes wrong the fuse will go first. You don't want the wire melting. Use the correct wire and a fuse which is lower than the wire. I used wire rated at 20 amps and the inline fuse rated at 10 amps.

Nice neat and very useful install - it's something I want to do in our motorhome too :o)

I am changing mine and I want to connect into the excisting wiring. The new lamp has brown & blue wiring. The wire leading to the old lamp from the wiring circuit feed are WHITE & Black. Which one are live & negative. please fiat ducato 2.3cc 2003

It could be either, Henry. You'll need to test the wires to find out which is which. The new lamp should have instructions to tell you how to wire it

I've one of those for my old Elddis caravan. May need to be a bit creative about where I get the 12V supply from!
@HermanHitstheRoad
@HermanHitstheRoad 6 лет назад
Why is that then, Clueless?
@CluelessinaCaravan
@CluelessinaCaravan 6 лет назад
Only because I want the USB point at one end of the van and the logical point to draw it from is at the other
@HermanHitstheRoad
@HermanHitstheRoad 6 лет назад
There isn't anything 12v electrical at that end of your caravan, not even a light? Tracing a light's wire back to the source may help you find the nearest point

I want it down on the floor alongside a mains point - the closest place I know I'll find a 12v wire is the control panel. Not a particular problem - all part of the fun on on old caravan :-)

Hiya, thanks for making the video. Could i possibly ask a couple of questions about doing it myself. The location where I want to install mine, the only source nearby to take a branch off is the electric step switch. Is it possible to take use some kind of double branch crimp to take a branch to my proposed new 12v socket? If so can you recommend a place to buy one. Do you think its ok to take a branch from the step switch? Also, what size circular drill bit did you use to do the hole? Many thanks Jamie
@HermanHitstheRoad
@HermanHitstheRoad 6 лет назад
Hi Jamie, you really need to take it from a junction point. This is because you'll put a lot more load than was intended by step switch. For example, I made the mistake of connecting it to a connector that was also used by the water pump. Plugged in laptop and that blew the fuse and we had no water for a few hours. You'll then need to place an inline fuse to protect the cable - if there's too many amps you want the fuse to blow rather than the wire to melt and catch fire. I can't remember what size hole cutter I used. I think it's still in the M/H which is currently in storage.
