Hello and a wonderful greeting from Wiesbaden, Germany. I've been watching here for a long time and just wanted to say thank you for the effort. I'm a programmer and guitarist, it's a dream to listen to your soothing and expert voice while working. This thread here is actually exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for sharing
Great episode Col - plenty of waffle, bungling, banter, loads of guitars, mods, pedals, nice playing, chat and in a long format! It feels more comfortable with more analysis (interesting stuff about pedals and dialling them in when playing live, signal chains and how live players keep their sound). More please!!
I was absolutely pissing myself when you thought the Bigsby didn’t fit, absolutely brilliant! 😂😂😂 That gold top looks superb! Great video as always Colin, thank you! 🤘
To be honest, I sometimes skip through long videos, but I'm a big fan of these longer journeys because there's more to find. Thanks for the content and the style of your delivery. 👍👍👍
“ The Rumble” by Native American guitarist Link Wray . I think it was the First tune to be banned on radio .because of its gang fight connotation …❤nice job
Clicking "Like" out of loyalty, for the YT algorithm. Your featured products today are not my cup of tea but they're still about guitars and I always appreciate your company on my Friday mornings. Cheers from Dallas! (Edit: dittoes on Mick Ronson and Bowie.)
But willl it work on my Tele? 😂 Colin shoold have his own show on the BBC. I worship at the Church of Fender so why am I watching this? Easy- the man is a born entertainer!
Regarding finding the right amount of string length on the tuner some pull the string through the tuner and hold it tight then pull it back to the next tuner. I pull it tight then hold it at first fret and pull it back to second fret, a little more on the unwound strings. Also have one wind on the tuner over the string end and the rest down like you. Never had a problem with this method. Just find a way that works for you 😊
Great episode mate 👌 ... my tips for restringing gibson style guitars is to bend the string around the the tuning post 1 further away ... ie - bend the A 5th around the D 4th post then simply bring back to the correct post and tighten 👍🏻.... I find you get about 2 wraps this way and the break angle is uniform over the nut .... FYI fender type are closer together so I tend to go 2 posts above needed 😊 ... hope that all made sense 🙏 thanks Colin I thoroughly injoy the show 🍻
Thanks for the channel Col, found it a few months back and cannot get enough, even though you say you waffle on, I personally find it so therapeutic and relaxing hearing someone discuss and tinker with something they are passionate about, and what other channel really delves that deep into the guitar!!! Taking pick up readings ripping em out 😂. Congrats on the 50k and here’s to the 100k 🍺
Colin… I chuckled out loud on the “can’t get even string windings on the post…” SAME! I’m always thinking, how freakin’ hard can this be?!? And… I added a Vibramate to my R6 - switched out to the Callaham Bigsby hardware (makes string changes SO much easier) and switched out the spring for a soft touch version. I LOVE it. And love that it’s totally reservable. Brilliant whoever came up with it.
Any video that has the Casino in it is always tops in my book. Thanks as always for your videos that are the perfect start to the weekend. They always put me in a great mood!
Thanks for this weeks video Colin. A bigsby makes everything look better. I’ve been wanting a vibramate/bigsby for my Orville by Gibson Les Paul. This has gave me the itch for it again. Also love the “extra” segments on the show. The format is great, I feel like I’ve watched a couple of videos in one .
The magazine-type format is an improvement - if one was needed - on the previous incarnation of the Guitaristas. Great watch, Colin, and appreciate the amount of thought you are putting into the content. You obviously care, and that will be reflected in the size of audience you attract. Always good to hear a musician's opinion on budget guitars as Joe Public, like myself, may presume they are always playing high-end. One thing: for me, Bigsbys on a Les Paul are the devil's work. Gretschs, fine; but not a Gibbo. All a matter of opinion - probably just me. The kit itself looks a good idea ie fit or remove without damaging the guitar. Keep up the good work, mate.
I'm watching your video on my laptop from a hotel room while I'm supposed to be out house hunting. One's got to have priorities. Thanks once again for helping to get my Friday started off right. ETA: The lesson learned here: It doesn't really matter to the guitar if the tailpiece isn't exactly in the expected position, unless you plan to modify it
Thanks for the videi! Nice score on the klon. Some things I'll never sell are my klon, 808 tube screamer, original big muff and several guitars. I've been offered stupid money for mine but refuse to sell. Same with my Triumph and Norton bikes. Some things have stories to tell and will go with me to the end. 😊
Best show yet Colin. The new format is great, you can tweek it and change it around like a variety show. Keep it up, you seem to be having fun and that's what it's all about.
Another enjoyable episode, that with the interview format chucked in reminded me a little of the beloved old grey whistle test. I must admit, adding weight to a comfortably heavy Les Paul doesn’t seem altogether proper, but it did make interesting content so you’re forgiven. I guess someone who hates Strats has to get their whammy practice in somehow. Look forward to hearing more of the Klon style pedal I use and more guitar debuts of course!
Colin as always great content, and the guest was a nice addition and when he bought up that Neil Young sound which I’ve been chasing since I started playing gave me some answers I’ve overlooked. Very cool as always you’ve mad my Friday night another learning experience cheers mate.
I’ve got a Burny 3 pickup Les Paul Black Beauty with Bigsby looks, plays and sounds great! I’ve had 6 Les Pauls over the years, some Gibson and some not, but I’d have to say this is my favourite of them all and it didn’t cost the earth! There is just something about a Les Paul with a Bigsby that’s difficult to explain!
Afternoon Colin. Love the channel. Based on your vids I bought a couple of squires, a bullet mustang HH and classic vibe 70’s Tele Deluxe). Very very happy with them both a few months on. Keep up the good work.
2 guitarists waffling about guitars. Simple. What we all want really. You're a nice change from the usual 'I'm a super duper RU-vid guitar expert, listen to me' fodder. Just normal guitar geezers (and gals - come on, where are you?) talking about the stuff we like. Nice one Colin.
Goldtops should always have a Bigsby!! I struggled to get the vibramate to fit flush on a Gibson classic. Minor filing was required on the hinged plate to get it to lay flush against guitar but then it was fine. Try using a capo to hold string tight while you fit it to tuner. Then it won’t pop off Bigsby.
Such a simple solution, but it has never once occurred to me to capo the strings when I change them. I always have to futz with them until they're tight enough to stay on their own. 😅
So much good stuff today, Colin! I like the nerdy stuff. I have way too many pedals but they're easier to buy when you can't afford a guitar at the time. They're just for tinkering with as I usually just plug directly into an amp. I installed a Duesenberg Les Trem II on my '50s Tribute. It's a third of what a Bigsby costs, and Bigsby units are hard to come by in Canada. Fun to use and it's good for a wiggle but not for dive bombing or two full step yanks up. I've heard of Pete Cornish, but his pedals are a wee bit outside my comfort zone for cost 😲 My Supro Tremolo was CAD $300 (175 quid) and that's about my max for a pedal. The interview with Phil was awesome. I look forward to his return with his guitar and amp. Cheers!
Good one! A B5 might fit on the Tokai. I have a 2018 Gibson Les Paul Studio Elite that came from the factory with a B5 mounted on a Vibramate, so it can be done. The tons of new gear that I've purchased over the last few years have not made me a better player, sadly. However, I learned today from watching your wonderful guest, that a Klon Clone just might do the trick! I'd better get on with building the Stew-Mac Ghost Drive (Klon clone) kit that I bought last winter. Cheers!
Great Show Colin , i bought a Epi Casino too , great guitars , absolutely love the mix of the show , totally works mate. Rono is an amazing musician/ guitarist also one of my boyhood heroes , go for it mate . Little Barrie is an amazing guitarist nice bloke and from my childhood town Nottingham too 😊 Cheers 70s John 🎸🎸🎸🎸 Cheers
Great show. Kinda happy you used the Epiphone 50’s Gold Top. I just bought one this week and I’m blown away how good it is for not a lot of money. I have a ‘59 Standard outfit too and hard to choose which to play. Moving on, I’ve tried loads of pedals of all sorts. I finished up selling most. I’m down to just 5, a Tweed Blues Junior, & a Katana 50. Less is more 😁
Aloha and Mahalo Colin! I'm watching this video from 1 to 2 am muddling on my Strat partcaster. I don't have a Bigsby but l guess you should have at least one Les Paul with a Bigsby. I keep getting all these ideas to build partcaster but no money😢. Story of my life. Alright enough. Colin keep up the good work.
It's funny Phil and I are about the same age and probably grew up with similar influences, watching him play was like watching someone play a better version of my playing! 😂👌
Magnificent episode Colin! Loved the Bigsby installation and those subtle differences that can throw a wrench in our plans. Also, the explanation of what a Klon type pedal does was wonderful because it can be hard to put into words, but subtle is the right word… as I’m using the word several times in this comment. 😆 You both play so damn well! Most excellent Sensei! (Always good to see the Eastman Juliet as well. 👍)
Great video, and the bigsby looks great on the gold top. Considering the amount of guitars you have with various forms of whammy bars - it would be great to see a video where you compare all of the different types and go through their benefits and limitations. I just bought a Japanese Jazzmaster and I've been loving it
Fantastic episode Colin! Loved the waffle and the interview and gear chat with your mate. You're gonna need a cocked wah and a MkI Tone Bender for your Ronson position! I've got a B5 Bigsby and vibramate in a draw that I had fitted to an SG years ago but took it off to sell the guitar. After this video it's got me thinking which of my other guitars I might now put it on... Cheers!
For semi hollows, vibramate offers one for 335 style. I’d Recommend checking the Towner bar system. Better and doesn’t add more weight when compared to the vibramate
Pull the string tight to the end of the headstock, after that you use the distance between the posts for your slack distance. Perfect changes every time
