It already is in fanfiction circles, it's called 'hurt/comfort'. It has its own genre section on fanfic sites. Basically, any show you can think of, and someone (usually teenage girls or bored middle-aged women) has written a fanfic where one character gets sick/injured and another character cares for or heals them, usually in a romantic way (y'know, "Oh, I didn't know how much I loved you until I almost lost you!!" and all that). This is one of the reasons I love fanfic so much. It's cringey, it's OTT, some of it haunts my dreams, but it's also some of the most hilarious stuff I've ever seen.

My niece was born with Cystic Fibrosis. It really is wretched. She is a teenager now, but it is an absolute battle for survival. I wish they could portray the disease in a less cliche way.

Its a hollywood film. They have to try to make the movie "cliche" and sadly romanticize to catch people's attention. If anything its good that they made this film so that people have a better understanding of what cystic fibrosis is. I have seen a lot of videos of people with cystic fibrosis who are grateful towards the movie. Because this movie can bring up conversations about the disease; it gets people talking and it brings more attention and help for the illness. I say this out of respect, i agree the movie was very cliché but it was also for a good cause. Im sorry about your niece. My prayers go out to her.

Just once, just once, there should be a sick teen movie telling teens they need a boyfriend or girlfriend. Imagine being a terminally teen and every book and movie makes them feel abnormal because they haven't been in love yet. Must get tiring. At least there's Me, Earl and the Dying Girl.

Actually, there is a condition where a person is not able to go out in the sun. It is probably better explained as an allergy to sunlight. It is called photosensitivity. There is a video called 11 Year Old Girl 'Allergic' to Sunlight that speaks of one case.

The disease the movie us based on is called xeroderma pigmentosum. Its real, EXTREMELY RARE, but real and a bit more complicated than simple sun sensitivity.

My niece loves that Sprouse kid, she wants to stream this ASAP. We all watch movies together on movie night, but I don't think I could get through this without laughing as hard as Martin. I ended up laughing hysterically at the death of a character she loved on 'Downton Abbey', she got royally pissed at me, said I was heartless, & kicked me out of the viewing party. I will skip '5 Feet Apart' or she'll never speak to me again, lol. Great review. I'm a new sub & I've had a blast watching your archive.

If you guys want a good sick teenager film, watch the highly underrated ‘’Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.” It can be a little cheesy at times but it’s very touching and emotionally resonant and the performances are all powerful.

Phantom Lancers I love those movies got both Raid movies on Blu-ray. I have been Thai boxing since I was 10 that stuff is right up my street . I don’t mind predictable romantic melodramas as long as they are well done , for example I really enjoyed the fault in our stars , officer and a gentleman things of that nature but this was just 😬

Dorcas Winter it’s a bit similar, but mostly different. I feel liked they touched on some very unique subjects that was very interesting to see on screen and also how the 2 main characters handled situations on screen was very fascinating

Although adapted from a novel, this is loosely based on the real story of two lovers with cystic fibrosis who fell in love with each other while in hospitals. After having received transplants and after having been married to each other for a short period of time, they both died in their 20s.

Movies like this I think are well intended when trying to discuss chronic illness or disability but they often fall short in accuracy and lay tropes on the audience very heavily.. It's Oscar bait is what it is and this type of genre exploring chronic illness and disability has gone on for ages already from The Miracle Worker to My Left Foot.

This is why I get a little miffed if someone tries to shame me for laughing at a lot of these films. The writers are cheapening it all for the sake of easy drama, they're lazy and uninterested in creating a sensitive portrayal in the first place. Like how soap operas used rape, addiction, and suicide. There's nothing genuine or compassionate about it. I'm laughing at how writers so blatantly exploit emotion, those lines of a dialogue that are really just a writer pressing the 'CRY NOW' button. I laugh at "movie diseases", not the real diseases.

It's interesting you mention the word soap opera because at least on television some teen shows have done a pretty good job at tackling those subjects you mentioned, namely Degrassi comes to mind; but in terms of movies like this the writing and story needs to be better and it wouldn't hurt to actually cast a disabled person in some of these roles in the future, perhaps not this movie per se but that's also a larger conversation.
