FIVE Things that could be IMPROVED with the 2004 (3rd Gen) ACURA TL!!
Discussing five things that I really don't like about the third generation 2004 Acura TL.
1) Reflection of the sun on the center console trim
2) Vibrating sounds coming from the center dash
3) The base model sound system
4) Tendency of the seats to crack!

I had a 2005 Acura TL, i owned from 2010 to 2016.I loved the car. The automatic transmission in mine took a crap at 140k, had it rebuilt for $3k. Then it took a crap 30k miles after that. Im not sure if the shop did half ass work or the automatic transmission in the 04 to 06 are just a colossal failure. I miss my TL. I now have a 2017 Accord V6 Manuel. I still miss my 3G TL. The 3rd gen TL still looks good and modern today. When the 3rd gen TL came out it was ahead of its time.

If you really like the car, you can always have the seats reupholstered, and a different stereo put in.

That squealing can be fixed easy. It's only plastic running together. Take it apart and use rubber washers, it cured every squeak I had in my 05 TL.

I had several rattling sounds in the interior i had to fix from center console to some squeaks around the windows.. I have 155k on my 06 TL and the leather hasn't ripped yet but has developed creases. I regularly condition them at least once a year.

This car is amazing especially if you have a 6 speed transmission.The manual transmission is hard to find but it comes with brembo big brake kit like the type s, limited slip differential and stiffer suspension.

after owned my TL-S for 8 years i found the 5 things I don't like but you didn't get a chance to mention. 1. Big ass turning radius in the parking lot. 2. Driver door has auto close function that will pinch your leg even at level ground. 3. Rear deck rattle. 4. Cup holder lid cover will eventually broke and the HFL module love to take nap. 5. Dash will crack especially with people living in the southern state. Here is the suggestion to fix the issue you have 1. You can wrap the aluminum trim with CF wrap. 2. The rattling you complain about is from the shifter bezel or the clock/ air vane assembly. 3. Leather seat is kinda shit but you can avoid rip by stay on top of it with leather condition (mine has 115k miles and the seat still looks better than most TL with less mileage) 4. Acura ELS actually pretty good, have you tried make DVD-A? you will appreciate th ELS audio. 5. IF the AT ever fail replace it with 2006-2007 Honda Accord V6 AT same bell housing but better in term of reliability. Both of my TL is a 2007 so they share the same transmission from the my RL (which not 100% bullet proof but much more reliable than the 04-06 counter part).

+truonghthe thanks so much for the thoroughly detailed comment! You've answered a lot of questions I had about the car haha. I haven't noticed the auto close thing on the door though. It's funny - I jammed my fingers in the driver's door the other day...thankfully it didn't auto close on me! Do you think that's just a feature for the TL-S? And oh yes I've seen pictures of cracked dashboards. In fact I was looking at a TL with 56,000 miles on it before I purchased this one, and its dashboard looked awful. The CF wrap was something I wanted to look into. I really like the look of carbon fiber trim👌 I haven't tried to make DVD audio...normally I just listen to the radio. The sound isn't terrible but it's not very good either. Is ELS the sound system acura uses?

After owning my 08 TL for less than a year the turning radius in the parking lot is horrible and i'm still not used to it so I just back in all the time to avoid the bad parking lol. With 96 miles on it the only problem when I bought it was the previous owner thought it was a good idea to spray clear coat all over the hood, front bumper, and on top on the wheel fenders instead of buying a clear bra. And because of that I learned how to detail and remove all of it and I recently just did a ceramic coating on it which makes the white paint pop. The thing I love about the 3rd gen is that you really don't have to do much because the car itself is already a master piece. So far the car has Tinted windows Stage 3 exhaust I think - Resonator replaced with Dynomax and Mid Muffler delete with 2.5" pipe AEM Cold Air Intake coming in this week. Some kind of MSR wheels.

The door issue happen to all 3g TL regardless of trim and this happen because bad engineering on the door hinges. All 3g TL came with ELS 5.1 surround sound regardless of trim and option , matter fact the 3rd gen TL are the first car sold in NA that has DVD-A 5.1 DTS. Obviously they are old tech now and can't be compare with today 7.1 DTS found on high end car. New Acura now these day are cheap they cutting corner when possible, you will have to get "Tech" package to get ELS sytem and they sound not much better than my TL. Yes DVD-A will sound much better than regular radio, however if you can your hand on a true 5.1 DTS surround sound DVD-A then you will use the full potential of the ELS system and you will be blowing away.

+Steven Kenzou I definitely want to tint the windows. Not sure if I'll do much else in terms of modding to this one. My end goal is to own an 08 TL-S and mod that one. This car I see as more or less of a nice in between for now

Great video, I have 140,000 miles on my 2004 and the transmission it is still rock solid with not a single issue since I purchased it. I am the only owner of my TL and I have my trans fluid changed once a year consistently. I rarely drive my car hard and I believe this is why I have not had any issues with my car to date. One additional thing I do is pull the transmission solenoid filter assembly and clean the screens once every three years.

Thanks for the comment! I'm coming up on 140k myself. Second owner though. I'll have to look into changing the transmission solenoid filter assembly...never even heard of that haha.

Hello and thank you for your speedy reply. Cleaning the solenoids screens make a huge difference in the transmissions operation. The solenoid assembly is located directly beneith the air intake hose and air box assembly. Once they are removed, it is easily accessed. Removing the battery and battery tray makes it even easier. Once you pull the solenoid assembly off the transmission, you will see three silver tubes that pull out of the shift solenoid main housing in the transmission. They have small mesh screens that are easy to clean the debris and sludge out of with an air line or brake cleaner. The solenoid cover can also be cleaned with brake cleaner and is very easy to DIY the entire process, it just takes some time

just to mention some things i dont like: 1. leather is terrible. 2. a lot of interior squeaks and rattling sounds . (which can be fixed) 3. Dash cracking. 4. Navigation stops workings. ( there are fixes but did not work for me, now I just use my cell) 5. Cup holder sliding cover breaks eventually from use. ( just snaps in half) 6. HFL bluetooth fails and drains battery. ( had to disconnect it for now until I find a new unit for cheap) 7. Power steering pump issues... (even after recall) 8. I hate the sounds system the sub woofer is terrible makes a rattling sound. Overall the car is great engine wise and is reliable as long as regular maintenance is performed...

I very much agree with a lot of what you said. I haven't had any issues with the HFL, leather interior or the dashboard yet, but I'm sure it will just be a matter of time

Classy Shoes I agree! Hfl - shot! Drains battery. Leather look like crap and is ripping. Just the other day my cup holder cover snapped in half and the half fell into the sealed compartment. The stereo could be better..

With the little rattle, (at least in my car) opening the little compartments in front of the shifter will stop the sound. Not sure what it is, maybe it's just not super tight or something and it rattles back and forth.

It's a good idea but I've already tried and it didn't work for me unfortunately. I believe someone in the comments explained what it was. It's not that big of a deal to me and honestly I haven't bothered with it in a while haha

My personal 5 are: 1 Tranny (I have 08) 2 excessive road noise in cabin 3 would like suspension to be softer 4 I also think lowest volume is not low enough 5 dashboard and steering wheel buttons feel a bit too cheap and plasticy. I don't have the glare in the eye issue, but maybe that's because I'm 6"3

I got a 06 TL that I bought from a Toyota dealership and I loved it for the first 4 months but it's a very noisy bumpy ride. I think it's because of the sports like tires. I hope get new rims so I can get "normal" tires. I was told the OEM TL rims only supports thin sports tires. Also it's starting to drink my premium gas a lot more than usual.

+brandenlee887 did you purchase the type S? Those are a bit rougher of a drive due the stiffer suspension. If not it just may be the tires!

No it's the normal TL, I'm just thinking it's the tires b/c I just got new back struts. It's to the point where I need to turn up my music to get a quite, smooth ride out of it.
