I think a big portion of it is your attitude. You don't sugar-coat, you don't dance around the issues, you're just bluntly saying your expert opinion and it's really helpful and refreshing for people. I came across this lady in the forest, she told me she went to this trainer whom I know. Positive only trainer. She likes doing the stuff that they do for just that: the stuff that they do. But when she says 'never correct your dog' the lady just smiles and nods, and does those corrections anyway. People take that stuff with a grain of salt, because it doesn't make any sense to not punish the bad behavior. So it's refreshing to hear a trainer who gets so much result in such short time, and a lot of it is non-edited, show that corrections can be used properly. And also it's the environment that you have, with safe practice space and plenty of other dogs that all benefit from each other. That's so hard to come by.

No is not a bad word. A world without 'no' is chaos. 'Yes' only works in a world that understands 'no'.
@Jesswithlessstress

With positive only training, you are only giving the dog part of the information. It's confusing to them. He's not saying abuse your dogs but how can we let them know what behaviors we don't want without communicating with them.

No one else ever said "they have to earn it" "release doesn't mean go crazy" and most importantly "if your dog is lunging why are you even there? Why aren't you waiting at your front door until he earns the walk?" Other people seem to focus on holding back a lunging barking dog, where Joel focuses on getting the dogs cooperation and agreement before you even leave the house. This is the most profound thing I've ever heard. 💖

I think the "I'll do this all day" line is the best line I've heard in dog training. A lot of dogs will absolutely pull on a leash all day and you can't stop that if you correct 10% of the time.

I GOT It totally, it doesn't matter if i like It or not, i'll do this all day. My puppy changed. I followed also some Cesar Millan's tricks and It worked but they were not enough. I followed different trainers but those two guys are the best.

I think people like to come to Joel because he is honest, tells us that we should accept our dog for what he is and most importantly he understands that the average person doesn't have time to train their dog 6-8 hours a day. Some of us actually have to work for a living. I also love how Joel shows us what he does - no quick preview and then: if you go to my website you can buy a course! This is one of the few channels that I have found where you get all the advise that you need for the majority of problems.

The pep talks of "you can do this too" is a big reason I believe you are so popular. Even if people don't actually want to do it themselves, the fact that you encourage people to train their own dogs sets you apart in my opinion. So many trainers only think about their bottom line, not helping people and their dogs.

The reason I like your videos is because you make sense. I have tried the gentle leader and my dog is 90% better with staying with me. And it’s only been 3 days. Your methods work. I have a very hyper doberman that just turned a year. He still needs work and I have been in classes since he was 3 months old. Every week he improves but it is a marathon not a sprint. Keep the videos coming ❤. I have been using your techniques and those of my trainer and my dog has 100% recall with no distractions but 70% with distractions so we keep working. Just stay consistent and they do get better.

Well, you talk about taking clients all the time. People need help. People are lost. Also, it seems like a safe environment to teach a dog. It’s really hard to meet dogs safely. Personally, I don’t wanna ask people “can I experiment with your dog?”. Also, there are ZERO trainers around me who will even return a call. They might do basic obedience, but not the hard core stuff! Doing great work Joel!!! ❤️

I love how you mentioned Zak George. I started training my dog with positive only and soon realised he wouldn't listen without a treat. I've since done more research on balanced dog training. Now I feel like I have a better relationship with my dog, I still use treats but also toys. People underestimate a rub as a reward for certain dogs too. Most dogs love a belly rub. I used to be afraid to discipline my dog but now I'm not. Do I do it often? No, because he has boundaries and rules

I've worked with an innumerable amount of dogs over my entire life... Had a lot of education on behavior and medical. But I trained dogs to save their lives, and so they can enjoy life. I didn't do training and rehabilitation for a living, but it was my life. It wasn't a business, so I didn't HAVE to help people that wouldn't put the work in that was needed to keep the dogs. My patience with people is a shortcoming in regards to training dogs, but watching Joel is helping me understand myself better, thus be a better human. 👍

Agreed. I have rehab'ed a lot of dogs... People, not my preference. I didn't do it for money, I did it to save the lives of dogs no one else would save. My shortcoming is with the people who aren't willing to do what it takes and want a quick fix answer to a major behavioral issue that's been rehearsed for a long time. I never made money off it, so I don't have time for those who are not prepared to follow through & do the work. Watching Joel has definitely helped me out with understanding this about myself. I help dogs because I want them to live and have a good life and so do they! I want people to have that as well, but they HAVE to want it first & that isn't as common.

Your energy resonates with people something powerfully different which is why the channel is growing by the day man. And not just that, but the intensity in your eyes and body language, how the dog picks up on those things. Because of you I understand and realize that a "dog whisperer" is one who understands the psychology and philosophy of dogs. Then I comprehended when you stated the "be the boss mentality." That was the epiphany for me. Also, you've taught me that in dog training, it's not what you do and say, but how you say it. With so many countries outlawing prong and shock/ecollars in addition to Herm Springer collars being back ordered and/or difficult to get, not to mention the fact that I would imagine most average pet owners really don't want to use them, I think you're about to get even more subscribers - well deserved for sure. Plus you can see in one session how much of an improvement both the dogs and the owners feel. Love seeing the difference of the dogs that come in on a prong collar, and almost instantly their demeanor, their reaction, and the actual walking by the owner is improved in the length of the video, not even the whole video - in like 5 minutes. Plus, the best is getting the "reactive" dogs at least meeting other dogs, possibly even playing with other dogs to the amazement of everyone! No other trainer that I can see actually does it. Sometimes Victoria Stillwell will meet other dogs on walks, but usually the trainers either don't address it or gloss over the subject all together or give advice on the layers and layers of games/training needed to get the results you get in one session even with the owners doing the training while you provide the coaching. You actually show people how to do it and still get positive results in a fraction of the time - even the comments people leave on all the videos - you are changing their lives and the dog's lives for the better! So awesome! I thank you and my students thank you so much!

Graeme is big here in the UK. As well as the TV show, he does podcasts, has written a book, and is also currently doing a theatre tour. He's a completely different character to Joel, but they have lots in common with regards to dog training. The main being calm and confident leadership. Graeme is good, but Joel breaks down the important foundation stuff into great detail, like how to do a proper leash pop as an example of many. I wouldn't say i was playing the victim when trying to manage life with my extremely reactive collie, (except when he pulled me over and I broke my ankle!! ) but I do admit to being completely clueless on how to improve his behaviour. Now, thanks to Graeme, and particularly Joel, he's made friends and played with several dogs, one which is a German Shepherd. That would have been impossible a year ago. What Joel is doing on here is life changing stuff for a lot of us, and I'll always be in his debt.

I dont have his technique down yet and I'm still figuring out my dog's ques. His hair goes up around dogs and ppl bc he wanted to w them. I just used, "That's your friend. That's your buddy." and its worked! He didn't jump as bad and let them walk by us but that is a big hurdle for us. Thanks for your help!!!

I love this guy… In my opinion the GOAT. Joel, can you make more videos on separation anxiety and small reactive dogs that bark out of fear?

Love the pep talks. I just looked and realized I've been watching your channel every day for six months now! The funny thing is because of that I actually don't really NEED to see you in person 🤣 but if I could get to you in less than 24 hours I would anyway!

The only thing you left off is ..... your words. You are able to condense the instructions down to an understandable pin point.

If I could afford your training I would definately drive from Georgia to you. Since I can't.....Thank you for your videos they are helping! My dogs have a long way to go but already they are listening better after only a week. I am able to take both dogs on my kayak now when it was impossible before. They have to lay down and behave. Just yesterday we paddled past a yard with a continual barking, growling dog. This usually sets my 3 year old Gordon Setter mix off. He usually jumps up and barks back. Yesterday he ignored the barking dog the whole 200 ft till we paddled past the yard.

Joel dropping looks into new merch? Nice hat!! The dogs looked content as the day was ending. Not wild and crazy. Good point to note that they had a well structured day 😎

Hi Joel, brings up the old adage, “practice makes perfect,” work with the dog on a consistent bases. Keep up the good work.

In martial arts class our sensei corrected the saying into:”perfect practice makes perfect”. I’ve seen people practice decades and still not be perfect, because they didn’t practice perfect, they practiced mediocre.

A pep talk is just what I needed, thank you Joel. For the Florida folks, may I suggest Matt Welch, a great balanced trainer of the Training Without Conflict school. Found his channel when desperately seeking solutions for my aggressive rescue; finally found Joel, while continuing to learn from Matt.

I feel like watching your videos then using what I learned to train my dog has just changed me, I am now more assertive, to the point, no means no, just like you say oh there not a puppy no more you don’t get the same slack as a puppy now I’m also using this but with people too, all the dog training I’m using into people, your an adult, stop dancing around and tell the truth your not 5. It has helped me with not only the dogs but people too

Hi Joel, I came across your videos when looking for online training to help my adult daughter and her 12 month Irish Setter, who, although dearly loved by her and the kids, has no discipline at all. They are unable to take her anywhere on the lead, even the back garden, because she just lunges and almost pulls them over. The only discipline she learns is from me, when I visit which, because of the distance, is not too often. When I saw your work using the Gentle Leader, I sent that video to her, recommending she buy one, which she did. I was lucky enough to be visiting when the Gentle Leader arrived. Eventually we worked out how to put it on, this dog does not sit still for more than a nano-second, but the difference in behaviour with the lead was INSTANT. We were all shocked. We took her into the garden, where she didn’t pull at all, then outside the front of the house, again, perfect, light on the lead behaviour, even with the children. It has opened up a whole world for them all, even though I warned them not to let her off the lead in the park, at least she can now enjoy going out and about. I’d like to give you a very BIG Thank You. Your training methods and advice are the best I’ve come across. I wish you all the very best. Thank you again.🥰

Awesome video as always. Seeing a lot of people say exactly what I was going to say. You are always so no nonsense, proof is in the pudding, sometimes comes off as a little jerky but nice when its needed. Plus you are not just a dog trainer, you train the dog plus the owner at the same time and that is something you just cant get anywhere else!
