This video shows how I fixed the problem with a W166 ML steering column tilt not working, that is it won't go up or down. The motor was working, so the fix was simply using a 13mm spanner to move the nut back and forth to loosen it.
2013 ml63 here and this video is exactly what I needed! I kept my hand on the 13m wrench then uses the steering wheel switch and it started working after a few tries. Thank you very much🙏
Hi Ken, I just fixed the same issue on my 2014 GL450 using your method. So far, I have been proving that owning a Mercedes is not as expensive as most people think.
Great video sir. All the info we pay for at our shop and no info on anything for this issue and many others when it comes to Mercedes. Fixed a 2014 E350
Thank you Ken . I had same problem tilting on steering wheel of my 2014 E250 . I contacted the dealer they said it will cost about $1500. I check youtube and fallow your direction step by step even during working i come back and saw your post and i solved the issue very quickly. everything is ok now. But i didn't know why the nut become tight by it self ? . Thank you once again.
Thank you! I had the exact same problem. In the begining, no matter how much I was losening the bolt, steering wheel didn't work. But I was persistent, and eventualy It started working. So, for the brothers who are trying to fix this problem, just don't give up. At the end I started the engine in order to give the electromotor little more energy 😅 Thank you once again!
Hey man... really appreciate putting this video together... this helped me figure out my issue. I had the same issue, where I couldnt tilt down.... so the bolt that you were showing is working with another bolt behind it.... which is on top of that black unit. after I loosened the top one... i figured out how the whole mechanism work. it screwes in and out... so for anyone who tries this in the future... loosen then bottom bolt slightly... try it... if it doesnt work... loosen the top bolt slightly and it should work.... everything else on this video was spot on! Great video... thanks again!!!
could you please help, what do you mean there is a bottom and top bolt? as per the video my ML only has one bolt sitting up against that black box - I loosened this and applied lubricant as suggested, but made no difference, still hearing that clicking sound, thanks
@jamienz89 so if you look at 3:10 in this video... the top bit that has the thread would have 2 bolts.. one on the bottom close to the cable that spins and one on the topper bid where its closer to the steering wheel. Ive got a C218 CLS and the problem with mine was that the top bolt had dried up and had gotten stuck.. I freed it up by trying to move it. I then greased it up and its been working fine since... Let me know how u go
@@draxler2941 I assume the top bolt isn't clearly visible in the video? I can still only see one bolt at the bottom of the black box (like at 1.26 in the video), but I didn't check on the opposite side of the black box for another bolt, will try again, thanks a lot for this information.
@@draxler2941 Had a look again, no luck unfortunately, the ML63 only has one bolt, have tried loosening it all the way, applied grease and tightened/loosened at various points, makes no difference. Behind the black box are a few washers only and they are moving freely with plenty of grease. Think I have a different problem to this video, but symptoms are identical.
Thanks for this video and taking the time to show us all how to fix this issue.i have the same problem on my Mercedes cls350 and I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem.
You're awesome man ... I was sick of this problem and when I went to the engineer to fix the problem, he told me that first the steering wheel must be removed with the dashboard completely and it takes 3 days to fix ... and I watched this video and did exactly as you did, and it only took 20 minutes and I fixed the handlebar myself Thank you very much I'm very happy You are an amazing man
Hey my friend my car is a w216 which share the same structure like your w221. I tried to loosen the hexa screw a bit but it doesn't work, what did you do to fix the problem, did you fully loosen the screw?
Thank you Ken. I just fixed the steering wheel tilting issue on my 2015 GLK 350 using your method. I just want to point out that the column did stuck because the motor turn too tight. I tried to lose the hex screw but did not work. instead, I use a long-nose grip tool to lose the column and the problem solved.
Just fixed mine with a bit of help from your video, though it wasn’t clear at first what bolt to loosen. I think the part where you highlighted it should be emphasized more in the video. Thanks
I have the same issue but the only difference is that on mine the metal cable/assembly keeps spinning and isn’t locked. But it doesn’t move the steering wheel when engaged. I will have to try this out though maybe I can move it manually with 13mm wrench.
2011 C204... Tried loosening the bolt, didn't work. It just gives the wheel more play up and down, the motor still not turning the cable. It's definitely free and not locked. I'm guessing my motor is busted (though I still get the same noises).
It turns out on the 2015 US model (left hand steering) the OBDII connector is not connected to that panel. It stays with the car on a bracket. However, I was not able to get a wrench on that nut so I'm going to try a crow foot on it tomorrow.
Very nice video man! I have the 15 ml350 and I have a question. My issue is every time I adjust the steering wheel in the up direction there are some continuous clicking noise. The noise only happens when the steering go up, not in horizontal/down direction. Do you have any idea what the problem is?
hi, thanks for your comment. That's an interesting one, sorry I don't know without getting in there to see what's going on when the column goes up/down. good luck.
Hi, sorry I don't have that car so I can't check. But from the other comments it look like it is the same in the E and GLK, so it might be the same as the SLK
Hi ken. My steering wheel can move up and down. But not in and out (lengthening) all i hear is clicking noise when push or pull the lever.its w251 r class. Pls help me thanks
