I was able to fix our Whirlpool Duet dryer, which was displaying “F01” error message and not starting, by replacing a burnt relay on the control board. Below is the link to the relay I bought from Advanced Electronics via Ebay:

Another success! I have the same Dryer in your video and sure enough the relay was the issue. The G8P-1A4P-12VDC was only $6.95 now with Amazon prime next day. I wish I could share a picture. The inside of the plastic case below the circuit board had an explosion looking black spatter on it from short circuiting. Fired right up and starting working like normal after I replaced it and turned it on. Super thanks for sharing. Saved me at least $200 for a new board and a service call charge to boot if I didn't so the work myself. Super grateful for sharing with your fellow home repair dad. Thank you!

I kept the same switch, cleaned up the burn mark, and used copper-desolder to remove the solder joint. I then soldered a jumper wire. FIXED! "Joe's Classic Video Games" channel has the same problem but with jumper wire fix.

I had the same issue with our Maytag dryer. The repair company wanted $80 service fee just to come out. We discussed the error code on the phone and it was determined the board would have to be replaced. The cost for all this? ( including the mystery “diagnostic fee?) Service fee $80, replace the board cost $340...total $420. Ive seen videos similar to yours and concluded I could repair this myself. The burn mark above the relay, same. I checked on Amazon and although not an Amron relay, it’s a replacement brand I bought and the dryer works perfectly. The cost? $11 and about an 90 minutes including soldering the new relay. The wife is thrilled and I enjoyed the fix AND saving $409. Thanks so much for folks like you to post these videos to help folks not get taken in by overpriced service charges and highly marked up parts.

Although it's a good low-cost option to try and replace the relay - it's quicker, easier, more reliable to just replace the entire board. Especially since many people have no soldering equipment or experience doing it.

You could train a monkey to do simple solder job like this. I'd recommend to almost anyone: instead of flushing away $400 just spend $20 on the relay, if you don't already own a soldering iron spend $40 on a decent one, practice using it for half an hour, then do the job yourself. You'll acquire a practical & valuable money-saving new skill and save $350 on the dryer repair you are currently confronted with.

Apparently like many solder joints that fail, this one is common. Had a similar issue with a Bosh dishwasher and an instrument cluster on a GMC. GMC I was able to resolder the joint and it works great. The dishwasher I had to replace the whole board as it caused other issues. These joints failing in the same place on each dryer signals a bad solder joint from the factory process.

If ur not sure that your relay is bad, take a 9v battery to test the switch side of the circuit. You should hear an audible "clicking" sound.

Thanks for the tip on where you bought your relay that working for you, seems digikey and mouser in Canada both have none in stock and ebay is often a crap shoot on quality. I re-soldered a new trace to get it running again temporarily while I wait for a new relay. I have no doubt that the relay is what caused the solder joint to fail.

When I removed de old relay I found that the copper from the board and the ring where the prong from relay is introduced were gone. The arc burned about 1/8 ~ 1/4 inch of the copper. The solution was to use a regular copper wire that I pulled form an electrical cable and solder one end to the relay and the other end to the copper channel

great video brother, how's it been doing ? mine went out the exact same way, sometimes shutoff mid cycle. popped when putting in a second load, took it apart & the relay went out just like that, just trying to figure out what led it to failure ?
@jamesthompson9685
@jamesthompson9685 3 года назад
Thank-you for your feedback. Installing the new relay has completely fixed the problem and our dryer has been going strong ever since. I believe these high voltage relays are prone to failure over time, as internally there is probably some sparking (which degrades the contacts) with every activation. Over time they simply wear out. So, if you replace the relay, you are solving the root cause of the problem. Good luck with your repair, please post any questions. Thanks again.

Hi, I think as long as you are careful and you get the pin/pad just hot enough to take the solder, you’ll be ok. I had the same concern as I was doing mine and it worked out fine. My iron is just a cheap 40 watt model.

The problem was rooted to poor soldering. Whirlpool released a newer model control board to fix the bad soldering across the entire board as a replacement. The reason it burned thru was because when the solder cracked it kept the power without relaying it to the next pin in logical sequence and likely the cause for the relay to break. Also, to make it easier to get the control board out, I took off the entire metal plate it sits on and you'll see how the white shroud is attached to it to release it entirely. It made it easier for me to get the board off as my hands are not small. Thanks for explaining and showing the replacement steps of the relay. I didn't think of trying it and only tried to resolder the pins.
@whitcwa
@whitcwa 2 года назад
No, it is caused by bad contacts on the relay. Relay replacement is the only permanent solution. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aZWBjouDPuw.html
