IMO, it's Tesla who are on the edge with their implementation of the CCS2 standard. There are numerous car brands that have had problems with the V3/4 superchargers. But, at the end of the day, Tesla was under no obligation to make their chargers work with other EVs, so it's BYD and the other brands that needed to modify their cars. In the reverse case, Teslas were not fully compatible with older Tritium 50kW chargers, but they were OK for other brands. Again, Tesla were under no obligation to make their cars compatible with the Tritium chargers, so Tritium had to change.
From what I have read, Tesla adhere to the IEC61851 Standard to the letter. BYD not so much. The big issue for BYD Attos will come when other chargers also comply more rigidly to the standard. BTW this also stops scheduled charging being initiated by some home chargers on the Atto as well. We could end up in a situation where no DCFC chargers work for our Attos. Its not a Tesla thing, its a "standards" thing.
@@dbmgreen It seems odd that other manufacturers have also had issues with Tesla superchargers, but no other brand of DC fast changer. This includes at least MG, Kia and Hyundai.
Standards are tricky. There’s always room for a bit of interpretation. We are pretty diligent with IEC 61851 also, but it’s not until you get out there in the real world do you discover the quirks of different vehicles.
@@huntchris Exactly. Too many people are quick to assume Tesla are always doing things perfectly, but they have operated within their own dominant eco system for a long time, so being compatible with third party cars and chargers has not been a priority for them.
So glad they've done this work. Is this a warranty fix, like free? Take it to your local byd service center? Can mycar perform it? Thanks for sharing it with us
Christopher’s Seal was the first to get the fix … hopefully BYD will send official correspondence on how to proceed from here for all affected customers
@Ludicrous I've got a Feb deal that doesn't work, heard nothing from BYD. Has anyone else been fixed or said they have? Do I have to message BYD or are they doing a recall?
Yes it’s an ongoing issue unfortunately … we’re highlighting it each week on our live streams. BYD AU report that they are rolling out a fleet-wide fix soon apparently 🤷♂️
If you're waiting for delivery of a new Seal, it's likely to have been built post March 2024 and hence it should be fully compatible. This issue is for pre-March 2024 Seals and all Atto 3s only
When i collected my Dynamic, i said i still wanted it even i couldn't dc charge at v3v4. Dang, missed getting Premium at a discount (oh well, maybe in about 5 years i can get a depreciated Premium or Performance). In the meantime, done over a 1000km so the run in period is over😉
Thanks Tom for keeping us up to date on this issue. I just drove my Atto 3 from Brisbane to Parkes NSW and I would have loved to use some of the V3/V4 Superchargers on the way. Hopefully the Atto 3 fix is on the way.
Took our Seal for its first service yesterday. I asked about this and no one at the service department knew anything about it. Infact they said it would never happen because of the rivalry between Tesla and BYD 🤦♂️
@1TRAFFIC2 Hound them. Turned up for our first service, they lost the delivery day condition report, so no panel gap repairs etc, they didn't have our front and rear cameras that were forgotten at delivery, tire pressures weren't even adjusted, turned up at pickup time, car wasn't ready. Good luck. Hopefully it improves for you.
I see your point but as demonstrated in my previous short, the V4 cables are thankfully long enough for the old reach around for cars with right hand side charge ports: ru-vid.com5SCvwlxrVa8 I suspect Christopher parked in the adjacent bay for convenience given there was literally no one else around this location
@@raymondrynehart Depends. If it’s clearly quiet with no cars around I’ll just do what Christopher did and grab the adjacent cable. If it’s busy I’ll do the pullover
Hi Tom, i called BYD showroom on 14th June in Liverpool and asked if my BYD Seal (bought in Dec 2023) will get the hardware replacement so it gets compatible with tesla super chargers, they first refused and said they don’t know about this. Then they called me back and said that there will be a software update only which will fix the V3/V4 tesla super charger issue. But they said there will be no hardware replacement.
Hi Tom, I called the service centre in Blacktown today and they had no clue about this. I then called customer service and they knew about the upgrade, but said it's not rolled out yet and it's only software and no physical change required.... Has this upgrade been rolled out already?
My suggestion is to wait until official correspondence from BYD before attempting to book a service. Christopher was literally the first customer to get this fix
I'm hoping the slower charging speed demonstrated is just because of the high(ish) battery level he had already as I also regularly get 135-140kW at those chargers (not the tesla one), but not yet got the fix.
Yes I’d hazard a guess that the slower charging rate is due to a combination of the high SoC and shared power from another vehicle charging from the adjacent stall
Hmm, so even with the v4 they haven't fixed the issue other brand EVs having their charging ports on the opposite side of the teslas, so they end up taking an extra spot? I thought they were putting them in the middle now so you can charge from either sides.
The cable is long enough to do the old reach around: BYD Seal x Tesla V3/4 Supercharger Incompatibility Australia Apr 2024 ru-vid.com5SCvwlxrVa8?feature=share I think Christopher probably just parked in the adjacent spot to make things easier given there were no other cars around anyway
Hi Tom, great video, side note, and this maybe old news with apologies, but have you guys noticed what seems to be 8 V4 Tesla superchargers being set up at P2 at Chatswood Place? I generally park there for our grocery shopping and the site has been under construction for a number of months, and only today I noticed all the Tesla Supercharger Units. It's a busy little shopping center and in my view an unusual location but will be handy for a quick top up for anyone living in or around the North Shore and needing a top up for an unexpected trip. I think it should be close to opening maybe in a couple of weeks? Hopefully will be open to BYD owners also!!!
I don’t understand why BYD put the charger socket on the right back of the car on the Seal compare to the Atto 3 that is on the front right. On a Tesla Supercharger the Seal is going to occupy 2 charger spot…I would be very upset if I need to charge my Tesla after waiting the Seal to finish…😡
I see your point but don't fear because V4 supercharger cables are long enough to enable the old reach around for cars with ports on the back right such as the Seal as demonstrated in my short: ru-vid.com5SCvwlxrVa8?feature=share For convenience, I think Christopher just parked in the adjacent spot given there was no one else around anyway
The consensus is that it's not a big issue if you use it intermittently on road trips. Obviously the best practice is to use AC charging as much as possible
The best answer, and most likely reason we can't get our cars to work with Superchargers is Ford and Tesla are using full-spec ISO 15118 plug and charge, so there's a whole PKI certificate exchange that happens that's wildly more complicated than verifying a VIN or MAC address which one of the older standards supports. Those manufacturers that don't have the full specification implemented.

@@LudicrousFeed fingers crossed. I really only drive mine around town as it's a second car though perversely it does more mileage than the family car. The family car is a turbo diesel Pajero Sport which is due for replacement..... Trying to decide between the Sealion 6 and Skoda Kodiaq..... Leaning towards the Kodiaq due to reports of better suspension on bad roads. Still a few months off though. Thanks for all the information you're putting up. Got wireless CarPlay going after watching this and 3 fingers for aircon settings is a godsend. I'd never have known despite having received the update without your video.
Pre March 2024 BYD Seal and Atto 3 currently cannot charge at enabled Tesla V3 and V4 Superchargers. With this fix, Seals are now compatible with said chargers! 🥳
Indeed, I’d prefer 22kW. I think the fact that most Chinese residences being single phase has affected the thinking there. That said, most solar here is single phase, so…
Android has always had the wireless connectivity I believe. I don’t see why the three finger actions wouldn’t work as that is a function of the display, not the connectivity.
