Not a bad video. Reasonable concept. Lots of detail. One issue, you never, never, never solder grounding wires. Electronics 101. Should they heat up, they can melt the solder and create a shorting/fire condition. Plus, soldering on the module pins without being able to use heat isolation can damage or destroy the internal circuits of the module. That can get even more expensive. Insulated crimp ends are best for this application if you can get ones small enough to fit. Thus the reason for ordering a replacement cable end with crimp connections for all the leads. No glue, no solder, no risk of shorts or failed expensive equipment or a fire in an expensive vehicle. Just a humble assessment of a 35 year electronic/communications engineer. Be safe.
There's always chicken little in every crowd. Settle down there champ. The sky isn't falling. Hundreds of people have fixed this issue this way. My 38 years of engineering tells me everything this guy did is absolutely fine under the circumstances. Should there be an issue with the ground, it will do nothing different than what it was doing already (heat up and shut off). The hot glue is an excellent way to prevent the joint from cracking from vibrations. Its a standard technique to prevent joint cracking in 12V systems. I build 12v and 24v robots as a hobby and it's exactly what we all do. We all solder the joints and hot glue them. The only issue you bring up that I agree with is soldering directly to the module without heat isolation but it seemed to work out just fine for him and for all the rest of us that corrected this problem the same way.
Excellent advice. I understand others will say that they can get away with soldering ground wires directly and most of the time they will literally “get away” with it. These are the people that in the old days replaced a bad fuse with a penny and worked just fine...until the house caught on fire. I have worked with electronics for 40 years and always amazes me the bad advice I read from “shade tree” mechanics, armed with a Harbor Freight free gift voltmeter and a set of knock off tools claim to have all the answers. Your suggestion when incorporated to the video provide a good, long term solution.
Dude, you just made me a happy man. My wife’s driver seat in her 09 went out over two years ago and couldn’t find anything on what was wrong let alone how to fix it. Until TODAY!!!! I’m going to fix it this weekend. Thanks bud and GOD bless you!!!
I have a 2007 and the heat/ac in the passenger seat will turn on then turn off, you try to push the buttons and the lights just flicker. I tried about but still no go. Driver side works great. Used heavy gauge ground wire and didn't solder, use push connectors. Is there anyway to tell if the module is actually bad? Great video and glad it has worked for so many. I just know the dealer ship will probably say I need a whole new seat or charge me $1000 or whatever.
Quick question, my heat doesn’t work on my drivers seat but everything else works on both seats , is the module still under the passenger seat or is it under the driver seat since I just have the one problem with the heat on the driver side??
Did you connect the two white wires with the black one or is one for each?. Are they two black wires do you have to connect?. I have a 08 king ranch that is doing the same thing.
I have a 2012 Lincoln Navigator. I have a similar situation except sometimes two seats work and sometimes they don't. I have three lights instead of 2 but it's basically the same setup. Sometimes the lights will come on and go right off sometimes they will stay on and the heat doesn't work or the air conditioning does not work other times the lights will stay on and the heat and air conditioning does work. Is this the same situation?
Yes, it's the same. Module is under the passenger seat. It runs in series. Only one module. If your module is busted search "9U5T-14B663-AA FoMoCo" and you can find the module for 65$. I recommend buying pigtails to redo the ground. Don't solder grounds.
Ok so I check mine it's an 05 expedition and my connections are in good condition they r not burn like urs what I found out on the driver side the module fell out of it's place and the black wire was cut so I fix it but the problem continues it's stays a bit longer on but suddenly in a few they turn of. What else can I check. Hope someone can help me out could it be the module could of burn up on the contact that it had with metal?
I wouldn't exactly know. I found my expidition had this issue and seen no good videos online so I decided to make my own video. I would say either that or a wire is shorted somewhere else. The bad thing with electrical components is places like napa will not let you return them due to no way to know if they were tampered with. So if you want to try that I recommend trying to find a parts store that will let you go test it in the parking lot and rerun it if that not the issue.
