I've got mine pretty well torn down. Need to run and pick up some small picks (or "booger hooks" as I like to call them), the ones I have are too big. I have 2 Bostitch guns (one is probably 30+ years old and never have had an issue. A costomer I was doing some work for gave me this DeWalt. He did a little framing in his basement and decided the drywall was too much, so I got the call (been in the construction since '73 and the drywall trades since '75). Anyway he said if I wanted it I could have the gun that wasn't working if I wanted it. He had gone and bought another. It's been sitting in the shop for around 3 years now, so I figured it was time to see if I could fix it. Appreciate your video!

Your rant is so spot on!! I still use things on this farm that were my dad's and some even my grandparents! And I plan on passing them on to my son. The new stuff? Heck lucky if it lasts! Great job! O-ring spaghetti!! LOL loved that!

WOW!! There is a whole lot more plastic in your DeWalt than there is in a Bostitch. I have had my Bostitch for 12 years. Built a Barn, garage and got 75% thru building a 4800 sq,ft Church before it needed a repair kit put in it. Back in my day (75) tools 'Made in the USA' were in demand around the World. They were strong and easily rebuildable/repaired. Not so much today. Hard to find Made in the USA anymore. Good vid. Thanks

haha mine is just like yours and I used it to frame my house then it developed an air leak where the nail comes out but it still nails but leaks tone of air. hop to learn how to fix it thanks Vince.

I have to say, I'm so glad you guys do videos like this. In the past I've discarded so many tools that could have otherwise been repaired, and saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars in the process. im not exactly sure why doing the repair work never occurred to me up until now. have you always repaired your equipment, or was there ever a time that things would just get chucked? today's video was quite the Easter egg. 🤗

+New Skills & Few Bills - There was definitely a time years ago when broken things were just tossed and replaced. Now I only buy quality things that will last and can be repaired or maintained. That usually means commercial or industrial grade, but you do get what you pay for.

I think adding oil to the inlet is a good idea, however I think it should be added after so many hours of use. Because DeWalt designs their tools for heavy duty use by contractors, you are doing a disservice to your tools by not using them more. My father told me that the moisture catching system keeps moisture out of your tools, making them last longer. Also, at approximately the three minute mark, please add a caption reminding people that you disconnected the air and removed any nails from the gun before starting the disassembly as there will be those who will use your video as a DIY and forget the obvious. Love these in the shop videos. I like that you fast forward the putting the screws in and out instead of cutting that out of the video. I think it makes the video flow better. xoxo

Yep. Great video and i hope this speaks to people what I have learned over many years in construction; Dewalt will let you down. They cut corners in manufacturing big time. I have had issues with their various drills of all sizes and circ saws and recip saws. Now I see they don't belong in the nail gun scene either. Thanks for the great vid.

I have that gun and a Duofast. The Duofast did the same thing and the replacement parts about the same . I found the regulator had been turned up to 140 psi that’s what caused the damage. I make sure now I check it and keep it at 115 psi or less .

Look at it this way, they're selling repair parts. That's a plus in my book. Very few consumer goods are repairable anymore, and the manufacturer sure as hell isn't going to sell the parts. Or if they do, they only sell them to their authorized repair centers. So kudos to dewalt for making repiar parts available to the consumer.

Pretty sure it’s an independent company that packages the right sized o-rings together into a “parts kit” for numerous brands and models of nail guns. Dewalt has no part in it.

This is why I buy harbor freight now. I was or am a Porter cable guy. But the nailers last about 1 year then leak, or need parts. Which are always half the price of the gun. Well, maybe a quarter. Just the nature of the beast. But I still buy PC, or Bostitch, and lately, Ridgid. That gun you worked on , is about 175 at harbor freight. Made by Pierce? I believe. At least you found an obvious, visible problem. Good job. I wonder if HF tools have repair kits,,🤔

3:08 'Sol good, it is totally true. 8:24 That is interesting, almost like they purposely plant a crappy o-ring so the device will fail eventually.\ 14:46 If you let the recoil bounce the gun back, it wont spread the force through the table/workpiece. Something I learned working at a pallet building company. It is also MUCH faster when shooting nails quickly, and less stress on your arm having to lift the tool each time. Pull the trigger just before striking the piece, letting the safety mechanism be the actual actuator; the gun will fire and the recoil will help lift the tool. 15:24 If I would have watched til the end.... That tip is now for OTHER people, lol.

Generally I agree. Most of the stuff in stores anymore is “throwaway grade”. A tool this expensive is too hard to toss. Fixing it was easy once I got into it and totally worth it.

There is a light bulb hanging in NY, I believe, that has been burning for over 100 years. Light bulbs were lasting so well that the companies met to determine they would build them is such a way as to burn out after an approx time. It was the first example of corporate planned obsolescence. Done to keep their income flowing.

Silicone grease is just fine for rubber O rings and such.. nothing wrong with it! Petroleum based oils and greases are the bad ones for plastic and rubber.

While i agree with your sentiment about tools that should last, O-Rings on air tools are a consumable that cannot be escaped due to the nature of how an air tool works, depending on use, an air tool should be oiled prior to use. If properly lubed and greased, the new O-rings should last a few years. I just replaced the orings in my dewalt. The gun was used a good bit for the last 5ish years. A $24 ring kit got it working like new again and I expected to rebuild it again in 5 or so years. Orings wear out. Storage location can also effect 0ring life. just some stuff to consider

Oings do wear out, but they should not rott out! Clearly a differtent type of seal material is needed! I have many air tools, and most are over 10 years old or more. They all work and I have never needed to repair any of them... They get an ocassional drop or 2 of oil and I use the crap out of them.... I think I will stay away from DeWalt tools in the future...Even though I own several DeWalt tools as of now...

Help please! I had the same issue with mine. However after I replaced the O-rings internally, then reassembled, Now the gun chain fires uncontrollably (machineguning). What did I do wrong or not do at all?

I just saw this. Mine also will chain fire and I think the model I own had a recall, but it has long since been discontinued anyhow. I’ve just learned to be aware and careful with the gun.

Can anyone help? Mine was leaking air through the nose so I just replaced the same o-ring was broke. But now when I connect the air the piston just fires over and over pretty fast the trigger isn’t doing anything. Didn’t have any problems with the trigger before. Anyone have any ideas?

I kept having the same problem with my Dewalt framing nailer. Use it a few times and then o-ring problems every 3-4 months. Got fed up with it. Never buy again. My Harbor Freight nailer was better and half the price.

Ok, I was hoping you'd get to that o-ring. (The one that is "destroyed") I'd like to know, (Not assuming that you do know.), WHY that ring, (And one other just like it on my dewalt nailgun), are made of the stuff they are made of. It seems every rebuild vid that you see, they find that/those o-rings in exactly that condition. Dewalt has to know of this. Why do they not only use the ring in the first place, but keep replacing it with the same material? My gut tells me the reason is planned obsolescence. A way to get the customer to bring the gun in for repair/rebuild. Or to at least buy the re-ring kit. I am considering replacing mine with nitrile or similar instead of what I'd get in a kit.

By the way, far as I can tell, that ring is not a moving part. It is simply a seal.

That’s what I would like to know! The material is junk and just deteriorates regardless of the amount of use. I like your idea of trying a different material. Since I replaced it I haven’t had any more problems but I’ve only used it like 3 times so who knows.

I think it deteriorates, as you said, regardless of the amount of use. Seems to take 3 to 4 years. If you think about it, they know that a percentage of people will just replace the gun. Probably a high percentage of those will get a newer model of the same brand. A low enough percentage of those will replace it with another brand, to make it worth the small chance of that. Make it last shorter than that amount of time, and more people will switch brands. Make it last longer, and they lose the money from new sales. Balancing act. Of the rest of us... A percentage will bring it to them for repair. A percentage will just buy the ring kit. In any of the above cases, it's more money for them. Finally, at 3 to 4 years to replacement of rings... Of the last bunch of us, a high enough percentage will replace the gun instead of the second ring job. In my opinion, when they know they could build something to last a lifetime, and they intentionally build it to break down according to what their actuaries and bean counters have determined are the optimal times for them... (As outlined above. Only they are a lot more sophisticated in their data and approach than I can explain.) That amounts to usury. And that flints my britches so badly, that I take great delight in reverse-engineering, or otherwise finding ways to make things last as long as possible in spite of their intentional parasitism.

According to the description above, the unit he's working on is a DEWALT DWF83PL. The procedure will be the same for the D58125 and the D58150. However these two are listed as "discontinued' by DeWalt, so many replacement parts will have to come from other vendors. Some are still available from DeWalt, presumably parts used in other units that are still supported. I have a D51850; this procedure worked fine. My gasket[s] weren't broken, however; they had disintegrated into their component atoms. Looked like so much thick grease stuck in the ring groove. Weird.

Just as an FYI: the rebuild failed. Obviously the unit has other defective rings. When next I need one, I am going to do as you suggest and just buy a cheap one. This DeWalt was stored inside my house, not out in the garage or a shed exposed to heat and humidity. I find it incredible that the gaskets melted just like the ones that caused the problem in The Andromeda Strain. At first I thought what was left of them was some grease in the ring grooves.

DeWalt should be sued for using O rings they know damn good and well will eventually dissolve into mush.

Need to reduce the air pressure. Rings getting blown out. That thing was brand new no wear what so ever.......so only conclusion is excessive PSI.

In my experience, DeWalt not fits the description you speak of in your rant to a tee. I avoid DeWalt whenever possible anymore. Pity. It's very hard finding decent tools anymore.

You are touching on a serious topic, the tools your great grandfather bought, were what was available to him, his choices were much fewer then yours are today, they were also much less advanced, so they were bound to last for a long time. If the hammer you shoved only lasts you a year, you are doing something wrong, and you would have destroyed your great grandfathers hammer as well, I DO know that it was just an example, and that you do NOT destroy a hammer every year. " planned obsolescence " is real, or is it ? good quality light bulbs used to last about 1500 hours, the last ones on the marked lasted 750 hours at the most, that WAS " planned obsolescence " But is the quality of your DEWALT drill motor " planned obsolescence " or is it something complete different, I think it is something different, being that " you " ( that is MOST of us in general ) are cheap, Your great grandfather had to work for days to earn enough to buy a hammer, " you " ( that is MOST of us in general ) can work for an afternoon and earn enough to buy a drill motor AND a battery AND a charger, AND have money left over ! so in that case it is NOT " planned obsolescence " at all, but simple what has to be done to meet the desired price point ! Of course you can buy a FESTOOL drill motor, that will set you back 700 $ including battery and charger, BUT you can NOT expect it to last you 7 times as long as your 100 $ DEWALT. Pneumatic nailers are probably every manufactures MOST serviceable tools ! the o rings in your nailer were available (either original or after marked ) simply because they are off the shelf parts, try to take your drill motor apart, and look for off the shelf parts in there ( hint, you will not find any ) Great video, and keep up the great work
