How exciting to watch! I just went through this. I totally refurbished my mast. My sheaves were from Zephyr, my rigging is synthetic from Colligo. I replace all my winches with Lewmar EVOs. I did have my mast scraped, primed, and epoxy coated in white. Also - brand new mast step, mine is keel stepped though. And, last but not least, a brand new ProFurl furler. Love to see others who went the same path...

In 2001 I sailed on my first Cheoy Lee Desperado a 47 ft Richardson design out of Oxnard not sure if the boat is still there. The owner I sailed with sold it due to illness. We sailed to Mexico and the Newport Ensenada race also sailed a few times to Catalina and I fell in love with the boat. I live in Chicago and found a 1977 Richardson 41 offshore very similar to yours in 2004 I have an in mast roller Furler , A baby stay for a staysail and unfortunately teak decks. I’ve done extensive work including replacing the Perkins 4-108 engine replaced all the headliner installed an electric head and recently got rid of the old data marine gauges and replace them with new modern Garmin instruments. I just found your channel a couple days ago and I’m going through the entire series. One thing I don’t know if you are aware of is that the chain plates in Cheoy Lee’s are notoriously precarious. Be sure to check the chain plates and the chain plate knee that attaches to the hull. I love the work you’ve done so far but I’m only a few episodes in best of luck. Captain Conrad

Ahoy Conrad! Desperado is still around; her owners just finished a massive refit and she looks lovely. you found us! Yes, the chainplates were some of the first things we replaced. Excellent vid, tx. Wife Morgan and I did a very similar job 3 yrs ago, it’s comforting to know every part of the rig is reliable. We too loved our crispy new stay sail and high foot cut 115% Genoa that we can see under. Tx again for sharing the story.

Greatly informative mast tech, maintenance and upgrade - many thanks. *Side note, of interest at 5:23 is SV Elan Vital ("vital force") seen on the hard behind you. Elan Vital is "..a term coined by French philosopher Henri Bergson in his 1907 book Creative Evolution, in which he addresses the question of self organization and spontaneous morphogenesis of things in an increasingly complex manner.." A very interesting philosophical read and a favorite saying of mine for decades

Fascinating video, first time viewer, the title caught my eye. Been wondering what it would take to take down and put back up a Mast and that coin tradition, very cool, just like all the other traditions that show up amongst the sailing channels, I shell take note of that one. Reminds me of the Lucky Loonie that the Canadian ice makers put at Center Ice during many of the Olympic games.

Hi Guys really enjoyed your video. In January I pulled my mast for the second time in 3 years. This time because just like you my sheaves had frozen. All my efforts up the mast were unable to free them so it had to come down, like you I replaced mine with Delrin and couldn’t be happier with my smooth running halyards! I have corrosion under my paint on the mast but I was not up for tackling that big job this time. After seeing you guys I will have enough confidence in taking it on in perhaps 3 years when I have to pull the mast for something else. By then we will know how your treatment of the aluminum worked. My only suggestion about the video quality would be to work on your sound pickup as it was a little difficult to hear some of your dialogue on the dock. Thanks so much! Ben S/V DAWN

Nice sailboat! -- QUESTION -- On you new head sail @28:03 there is a transparent circular hole in the sale. What is that and why is it there? I have seen it on other sailing channels too but no one explains its purpose.

Just found your channel, great video. It’s great to see a sailing channel from the city I grew up in. Are you guys from Ventura originally? I moved to Seattle after high school in ‘92 😀. Anyway, We’re sailors as well and are waiting for our new Seawind 1260 catamaran delivery in August of next year. Maybe we’ll see each other in some remote place in the future. Fair winds.

Sorry guys, quick question, how do you call exactly to the fittings you use on your rigging wire, I saw you mounting them yourself, I am currently rebuilding a 36ft 1971 Sailing boat and I am interested on doing the rigging myself. You should have bead blasted the surface and then cleaned it with Alumiprep/acid wash. After you acid wash it any remaining corrosion will turn black, then it needs to be sanded/bead blasted more until it doesn’t turn black any more. There is so much corrosion still on your mast, it will keep growing even with the top coating you applied.

Great, just passing on info. I work with a lot of corroded aluminum. All that black stuff is corrosion and is slowly weakening your mast. Keep an eye on it.

@@charlesdobrovolny7059 Appreciated - I would recommend reading the blog post and articles we published regarding this project which gives detailed info on our prep process. In California we are limited with chemicals we can use because of the BPA laws. We did everything we could, and corrosion has ceased. Nyalic has been a wonderful product, seems to allow the metal to breathe more than paint would and when it does get scuffed all we need to do is wipe down the area before applying another coat.

That was a really good video. I think you guys got what it takes . If I made a video like that I’d be proud . That’s a lot of work editing . So hears the any question . Do you guys no Resolute Sails . It was a old sailing channel I watched when I was searching my sailing dreams.. I always wonder if they’re safe and sound . I like the liberal application of Tef-Gel, but you have your corrosion terms a little confused. You kept saying 'crevice corrosion', but what you are preventing with isolators between dissimilar metals is 'Galvanic Corrosion'. Crevice Corrosion does happen to stainless steel, but that is caused by oxygen starvation along with water, it is not a result of dissimilar metals. Crevice Corrosion is what happens inside the strands of your 1x19 wire rigging when water eventually penetrates between the strands. When you see swage fittings swell and eventually crack is also because of Crevice Corrosion. Again, oxygen starvation of the chain plates where they enter the deck causes crevice corrosion that leads to failure.

Hey Luke! Thanks for watching and chiming in. Check out our website for a better explanation as I believe we used both terms in this episode at the appropriate times - When two different metals create a tight crevice, both crevice and galvanic corrosion can potentially occur. A lot of our galvanic corrosion on Avocet lead to crevice corrosion which was nasty all around. We also have a couple published pieces in Cruising World, Latitude 38 Good Old Boat regarding the subject matter that you may find fascinating as this project is over 6 months old - we have had lots of time to write! @@sailingavocet I tried to read your articles, they link to "Foolproof Focaccia", at least the Good Old Boat article about the Bulwarks and your research on mast painting in Latitude 38 links go there, some of the other links work to unrelated articles. Anyway, I'm sorry to be a pain but you literally didn't use the term 'Galvanic Corrosion' once in the entire video. Also, your Rigger keeps calling Dyneema an 'Aramid'... it's not. Aramid is what Kevlar (trade name) is , Dyneema is UHMW plastic, so not even close. He says aramid while you show pics of Dyneema, but I know he meant Dyneema because he said Aramid again and that you splice it... you do not splice Aramid rigging, it's unidirectional fibers that use an incredibly similar fitting to Hi-Mods for termination. Sorry if I'm a stickler for details, but there is way too much bad info on boat forums and in RU-vid videos. I dunno, maybe I shouldn't bother helping, all the bad info out there is what keeps me busy going up masts to fix the mistakes of others.

Don't get the wrong idea, I really like the work you do (thats why I watch) and I don't think you made any mistakes on your mast. You made great choices, especially the G-10 mast step, really nice application. I pointed out the issue with terminology because I hope it helps maintain your credibility.

It is a great option and we hope many explore its abilities as we have found many uses for the material in various projects. Howdy! This isn’t paint. It’s a coating. And we sanded the surface and prepped with with mineral spirits before applying the Nyalic. It’s been 3+ years since this project and we haven’t needed to recoat it yet. VERY impressed with its durability

Looks like you are taking off epoxy base coat. That yellow & It's hard to sand off. Aircraft paint remover won't do a good job on epoxy will take off paint. It's made for aluminum. And paint typically sands off easily. Good luck & cheers from Northern California!!!

Avocet was originally a "slutter" aka a sloop with a cutter capability. We removed the staysail since it was never used and where our dinghy rests on deck. This new fuller allows us to reef the jib, which we have done recently and it worked beautifully.

We did. Everything was wiped with acetone before application. It’s been 7 months and it all still looks great 🤙

They approved the idea of leaving the mast bare OR painting it - what’s your point here buddy? We didn’t want to paint it, but I wasn’t totally on board with leaving it bare (for the reasons given in the video). Perhaps you’re not the best at watching RU-vid videos and would like to read one of the articles I published on the subject. You can find this EXACT project published by yours truly on Latitude 38 or Good Old Boat. There is merit in my research and, oh, even our rigging friends were supportive of the Nyalic decision - still stoked on it 2 years later. 🤙

@@halomaniac74 Can't be any calmer down here in the Sea of Cortez. Life is good, our mast is shiny, and we have not only received paychecks regarding this project, but have also been asked to speak at various yacht clubs and gatherings during our travels to share our insight. Just because our friends in the industry were not aware of this product doesn't mean we didn't research it or cross reference it with other people in the field. Your comment was not formed as a critique, but rather troll-like. If you are genuinely curious about why we decided to use this product rather than paint/leave it bare just ask. xo

People only need to be defensive if there is someone on the offensive. Jay Smith - please send us a video explaining/ detailing your criticism. A simple comment just isn’t enough nowadays. Once you’ve completed the process just comment the link of your video please. Rather than just posting a comment that took 10 seconds. At least they (the avocet crew) googled it
