After many hours of sweat, a few hundred drops of blood, and some tears, Avocet was finally returning to the water after her long boatyard stay, 53 days later. In this video, we wrap up painting by incorporating an unexpected galley item as well as discuss the differences between a feathering prop and a fixed blade as we share one of our recent hardware upgrades. Despite Avocet being afloat again, there is still much more work to do. Fair winds!
Edit :In addition to donating our RU-vid earnings to the #CreekFire victims, we will be keeping a running linktree of the GoFundMe's for the families in need. Please check out the list so far, help if you can, and share if you can't 💕 linktr.ee/Sail...
Just a reminder: you can help raise money for the fire victims by watching our youtube videos. Every view on our latest 3 videos earns money that will be donated at the end of this month and next!

Kenny Powers you can always join a yacht club and offer to crew! One of the best ways to learn is to get on as many boats as possible and feel how they are all different. If you’re lucky a sailor will take you under their wing and teach you :)

Don’t be so critical of your work - your paint job looks pristine - I have watched several boat channels paint their boats and yours looks by far the best.... several only used rollers with NO spray rig. Hey guys... the zinc spray paint on the prop got me thinking. Zinc anodes are there to be eaten away so other metals aren't attacked. However does that not mean that the zinc paint will be eaten away as well and then leave your prop exposed to the elements. Also, prop speed is there to keep growth off the prop so how is that spray paint holding up? All the best.
@sailingavocet
@sailingavocet 4 года назад
Hey there! 5 months later, so far so good. Chris dove on the prop 2 months after we splashed and it had some soft growth on it as did the rest of the bottom, but that is because we haven't moved in 2 months. Not bad considering the surrounding vessels all have hard growth and tube worms :)

Do blister come because it wasn’t maintained properly in the past?
@sailingavocet
@sailingavocet 4 года назад
Great question, we addressed this in a previous video but the resins used in the 70’s were not the best and lead to a lot of blister issues. With that said, the previous owner had already fixed a lot of blisters but he cruised Avocet hard for 30 years and when we got her 2 years ago there was NO bottom paint. We expected some blisters, so wernt surprised. Luckily with our fixes she should be going strong and blister free for years

Worst mistake ever did was paint that prop ,prop speed is cheep for the life of your prop DIYS they haven’t got a clue see how you go after a couple of months , prop speed can be a shared buy to boaters just look around the yard see who is nearly ready for some and the cost is halved that what we do here and it works all over the yard good luck

Well, my brother did the same on his boat and it’s lasted well over 1 year. During COVID there was no prop speed available to ship to us, and we needed to get back in the water. The yard backed up our choice to use zinc paint, as did a few other avid sailors. Eventually if we have more $ in the bank and time to sit around and wait for yet another shipment we will get some prop speed 🤙 almost 5 months later and it is doing just fine 👌
