As a guy who comes from riding motorcycles for about 30 years you guys are really getting me interested into these scooters. Especially this Helix they look really nice and fun and possibly something you could tour on.
As a 30+ year motorcycle owner and rider buy one if you can find a nice one they are a historic classic and loads of fun. My last 2 bikes were 1500 & 1800cc Goldwings until I bought a 1996 Helix 2 years ago. I don't at all miss wrestling 800+ lbs over it's 349 lbs, the higher cost of maintaining 6 cylinders over 1 cylinder, or shifting 5 gears opposed to none, and the seating and feet forward positioning are the ultimate in comfort. I mostly drive parallel freeway back country roads and cruise at 50 to 60 mph with other riders driving larger machines without a problem getting 68 to 77 mpg. and still have a top end of 75 mph. I have always been fascinated with scooters my whole life and will probably add a Suzuki Burgman to my collection one day but will never part with my Helix.
Great job and video I could watch Helix videos all day long. I bought a 1996 Helix back in September 2018 and I replaced the complete CVT last fall with all new OEM Honda parts as it was at about 21,500 miles and started shuttering and shaking when taking off from idle. Everything appeared to be all the original worn out parts with some being dated 10/17/95 the variator rollers had very worn flat spots and were replaced with Dr. Pulley 21 gram sliders, the driven pulley friction pads and bell cover replaced due to having the dreaded bluish tint color indicating that they had overheated and the bell inner surface damaged, the belt replaced due to having several cracks in it, and everything else considered a moving part. Yes they are easy to work on, diagnose and repair as you did everything correctly in my eyes by using the tool and torque wrench when installing it like I had also but I have seen others using a impact gun or looking like a cave man tapping on the edges of the nuts with a hammer and chisel to tighten them causing permanent damages. Since I never received any prior maintenance records for a solid piece of mind and to be 100% road worthy I would do as I did and eventually replace the air filter, fuel filter, spark plug, flush and replaced the front brake fluid, flush and replace the coolant system, replace the final drive oil with 75-80W gear oil if not at least check the oil level as I have seen others have theirs damaged because they were run dry of fluid. While mechanically everything on mine appeared to be somewhat neglected, appearance wise the bike was showroom quality so everything should now be trouble free for a long time. My only regrets now is that I didn't video all my work to share with everyone out there, but I hope to start and change all that in the near future.
Lots of good information here! My buddy just got a 1999 Elite 80 and is experiencing the same shutter when starting off and decelerating. We think it has to do with his clutch bell like you mentioned above. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Nice work and TIMELY! I just got home with my second Helix! I sold the first and never forgot how much fun it was and how wonderful it was to ride. Grabbed a 1995 that just had a full service at HONDA, with new stator, oil change etc., carb cleaned and rebuilt by HONDA. Owner refused to pay the $1,000 so told me I could have it if I paid the HONDA bill. Bingo. Paid it, grabbed the title and after testing it, threw that bad boy in the F-150 and brought her home. GREAT channel buddy. I can see we think alike. I'll look forward to more videos and time spent watching your efforts. Thank you so much for the time you took and yes, I'd love to see more of Fido! Great series of videos! I had an '87 Helix and loved it. They're pretty bulletproof machines with a couple of weak spots. On my '87, there was no bracket to support the carburetor, just the rubber intake boot. Over time, the constant vibration would crack the boot. Honda corrected this by your 2001 model. The other weak spot is the little rubber hose (it looks like a vacuum hose) that carries coolant to warm up the carburetor. If that hose breaks or falls off, you'll lose all your coolant before you can say "oh shit". That's what happened to my '87. I was on the freeway doing 60+MPH when the hose fell off the carburetor. By the time I got safely to the side of the freeway, my engine was toast.

@Wolf Den i am planning on running some monroe air shocks. A lot of Harley guys run them on their bikes. Im going to have to fabricate mounts and all that though. Should be interesting haha.
@Wolf Den the goal is to make everything reversible. I want to try and mount the rear shocks and air system in a way to where I can remove it and go back to oem if I want. Should be super fun when I get into it!
I bought a 2000 Honda Helix 3 months ago and I have put close to 3000 miles on it! My Dakota just sits. I make excuses to ride my Helix every day. It's like some kind of drug! I go out to buy gas, whatever... I love it!!!
Im actually going through a similar rebuild of an mc-54-250b scooter! I bought it with all the plastics off of it and the mechanics not in good shape. After starting it for the first time, the fly wheel nut came off inside the crank case (i shut it off before it did any damage) but the nut was a custom job by the last owner. Glad to see someone else rebuilding a 250cc scooter!

Doing one myself. Picked up a 92 Helix for 500. Body’s perfect, except for missing that nose vent.Mechanically ,not so good. Replaced fuel lines,filter and pump. Had to replace the Wire connector on OEM fuel pump.WTF? Had the wrong connector on it. Started right up. The problem is ,it’s knocking like a drunk who forgot his house key. Was hoping it was one of the 2 exhaust leaks. Hole in the flange plus missing the muffler gasket. Well, that wasn’t it. Yeah it’s a knocking. Engines setting on my workbench now with a missing cam bearing. It’s scattered around the engine. Fun times.lol.
It's always turning because it's a cvt. Check to be sure you have the right belt and clutch spring. Some people change these to try and make them go faster.
I know you want to lower the Helix and make it your own, but trust me, it aint broke. Dont need fixing. The Honda engineers REALLY knew what they were doing when they designed this machine. Once you start riding it on the roads, you will see what I mean. Enjoyed the video and keep it up!
You are right, I have been riding it and I love it, but..... I am still going to try out an air ride setup. I plan on getting high quality air parts to hopefully get the nicest ride as possible and are going to try and make the system 100% modular. Meaning I will be able to swap directly back to stock suspension if I dont like it. I do not want to cut or modify the stock mounting points at all. Thanks for tuning in and commenting!

Bag? Most Helix owners add top cases for extra storage. You did such good job with the new body panels, I’d hate to see bags hanging off if it. You can get a matching black trunk.
@@newenglandpats59 i apologize, I should of been a bit more clear. I am wanting to put it on air ride suspension so it can sit lower. I usually refer to those as "bags". Probabaly not the most practical thing since I will have to modify the rear trunk, but it will look so good in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
Good job. If you find that windshield is too tall you can cut it down. Make sure you black out the bottom of the windshield with electrical tape (so the headlight doesn't light it up). Good job with the clutch repair. 👍
For sure! They are a lot of fun and super reliable once you get everything sorted. If you haven't already, I suggest looking into getting a service manual for the bike. It will definitely help out when performing maintenance and servicing for the bike 👍 Goodluck with your helix!

@@TheBSRecord I need help, I’m done with the scooter If I hit a speed bump, put it on the stand, or take it off while it is idleing, it sputters for a moment and sometimes dies as if the shaking causes it not to get fuel momentarily. Please have experienced this fault before ? What could be causing it
What is your idle set to? Maybe it is set a little low and when your under load, it has trouble staying on? When you bike is idling on the center stand does your rear wheel spin at all?

Very cool my Helix needs love to i have a black all oem 1995 it needs a fuel pump and a battery and a good wax job i would love to find a new seat age cracked
Exploring With Larry when I replaced the fuel pump on this 92 I just bought had an issue with the wiring. OEM pump had the wrong connector. Plus the wrong color coding on the wires. WTF? Easy enough fix though. Just swapped the new connector with the old one, once I figured out which wires were which.
Since posting this video I overhauled a 2006 helix and did the work you mentioned in this comment, plus more! They are pretty simple scooters to work on. Ebay is your friend, their are all sorts of replacement parts on there. Good luck fixing your scooter!

Thanks! Yeah the fairings definitely took some time to get right, I had to trim out holes and massage them a bit to make them fit. But overall they turned out pretty good!
I will be using a set of Monroe air shocks designed for an older corvette. They are cheap and a lot of Harley guys run them on their bikes. It will not be "plug and play" and I suspect their will be a fair amount of fabrication involved. However, the goal is to keep the stock mounting points just in case I ever want to go back to an OEM setup. Thanks for tuning in!

3 wheel car on Messerschmitt kr200 body ,5 speed motorcycle clutch and gearbox, water cooled better, Citroen 2cv front suspension,helix gearbox for non clutch folk.
Question. If I'm not mistaken I think I've seen, for lack of a better term, a gasket or seal that goes all the way around where the rear trunk lid contacts the trunk cover. To keep out the elements and so that two peices of plastic aren't touching. My '97 doesn't have one and I don't see one in Honda's Parts Fiche.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can post links here in the comments, but I will try to explain it better. The company who made the kit is called RISE Corporation. When you go to webike, make sure to go to the "FUSION (HELIX, SPAZIO, CN250)" section. The body panels will be listed there. Keep in mind shipping is way high right now due to world issues. If you get a chance to show the carburetor support bracket, where and how they mount it would be cool. I have a 1987 model which did not use a bracket. Later they added it to prevent cracking of a carb boot it hangs on or something. Dealer suggests I "make something up" , but it would be nice to see am oem bracket program. Thanks for the videos!

I bought same kit. Can you tell me how the wing metal brackets are installed? Inside of trunk or between wing and outside of trunk/side panels sandwiched? TIA
It's been a minute, but if I recall correctly, they are mounted under the trunk plastics and screw into the bottom of the wing. They sandwich the two pieces together. You do not have to drill into your actual trunk to mount the wing. Hope this helps!

I know this video is a few years old but what was the name of the site you got your body kit from? I have a 2008 Honda Silverwing 600 and I wonder if they carry a complete body kit for it as well.
Thanks man! The website is called Webike (dot) jp or webike Japan on google. Search for the Honda cn250/fusion/spazio and you will find all sorts of parts for them. You can also find them on ebay sometimes too.
I got the plastics from webike(dot)jp you will have to search for the "Honda Fusion" or "cn250". They are known as Fusions in Japan. Also check ebay, I've seen aftermarket plastics kits there too. Unfortunately, shipping overseas has gotten much more expensive since this video was made.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes it was just the nut coming completely undone for the clutch, allowing it to expand behind the clutch bell. Hope this helps!
yes, the flywheel/variator weights were in great shape. The Helix only had around 2k miles on it, so they haven't worn down much. Thanks for tuning in!
Unfortunately, it seems shipping prices have shot through the roof over the past year. I got my set from a website called webike. You might be able to get a lower set of plastics off ebay. There was a seller on there who was based out of Cali, so shipping wasn't that bad.
It's a universal clutch removal tool for scooters I got off amazon. If you look there and search those terms you should be able to find it 👍hope this helps!
What did you use to install the wing/spoiler on the back? I bought some replacement panels that came with one, but I don’t know what parts I need to secure them.
The wing came with a bracket and 2 screw for each side. The bracket goes underneath the plastic trunk panel and the wing goes on top of the the plastic trunk panel. The screws screw in the bottom of the bracket, through the trunk panel and into the wing on top. I hope that makes sense!

is music really necessary for EVERYTHING, IT GETS OLD , Silence is not a bad thing. It would be nice just to hear NOTHING while these refurbishes are completed. MUSIC is over kill today for EVERYTHING. No need for distracting background music.

I am looking forward to more of your upgrades. Except the bags thing. It will no longer be Honda’s perfect design. You will be plagued with bottoming out issues as the Helix is very low slung as it is. Maybe you are doing this for appearance, but normal riding will not be what your hoping for. I hope have you a chance to experience your Helix the way Honda designed it before you make these changes. You may very well want to leave it as the best and most all around practical scooter ever designed. My Helix is 24 years old and has over 80,000 miles.
Wow 80k miles, that awesome! I actually have been riding it since this video and it is great! However, I still want to try a bag setup. BUT... I have decided I am going to make it completly modular. Ahh - webike... You know you can repair a bent wheel, right? "boomerangs" look like wind deflectors to aim the air around you. Rear wheel spinning whilst engine running is normal. That nut looked like it has worn threads...
I kept the old rear wheel because I want to try and get it repaired. I dont trust myself do it by myself though haha 🤣 The rear wheel spinning is definitly normal but before fixing the clutch, It would spin the wheel "forcefully" like it would with the clutch being engaged. Everything went back together ok so I hope that lock nut works. If not, I may have to replace the clutch. Thanks for watching and all the info you've provided 👍
