See how THIS FLOOR held up. 2 years later video: • How does it hold up?! ...
If you haven't seen the first video then you might need to check it out to understand what's happening in this one.
First Garage floor video: • Upgrading my new Garag...
Floor kit I used: geni.us/UqZ61
After the first video, I wasn't happy at all at how the Rustoleum Rock Solid floor kit worked. I had done a ton of research on the product, watched videos here on RU-vid and somehow my flooring didn't turn out anything like others floors did. In this video I'm going to try and put the floor coating on again, over the first coat and hopefully, the garage floor can start to look like it should!
Need music for your RU-vid videos? All the music I use comes from here and I couldn't recommend them more: goo.gl/XhqOsp

aboynamedben not true kind sir. I work for a decorative concrete company, and we would have ground the floor in the beginning and applied a much more premium epoxy, and applied it correctly. Plus we would have sealed it so it will last a lifetime. Probably would have ran him $2,500. More money, but would last much longer, and look 10x better.

Saw the problems before they happened when I watched the previous video on this project. #1 mistake made when using concrete dyes, sealers, paints, epoxies, coatings, new concrete, etc. is not examining, cleaning, preparing, and completely fixing the concrete that will be taking the coating. Now for all the details and why: Whatever the concrete feels like as far as texture and what it looks like, will make a huge difference. A smooth concrete surface will need less material. Some concrete is more porous, so will require more material anyway. And the epoxy/coating being put on can vary as well, depending on the material itself and temperature etc. For example, a warmer application will likely soak in better, would require more coats, but I believe should provide a stronger surface. As far as color, even some opaque coatings will not completely prevent the discolored look between areas. So what you see on the surface, can and will come through in some way. The fix: This was the fix, a lot more material, a lot more coats, until it is all leveled off and thick enough to hide colors and textures. Next time, spend extra time on the concrete first. If the surface, like this one, is uneven all over, textured in various ways, needs patching...then you might want to go all in and grind down the high spots, clean well, etch well, clean well again, then pour the best high strength self leveling concrete on top one can find. Then put on rocksolid. And it won't 3-8 boxes, but 1-3. Important reminder, provide texture in the coat, unless you want a super smooth but potentially very slippery floor. Rocksolid I believe sells a texture material, so do many others.
@suburbanhobbyist2752
@suburbanhobbyist2752 4 года назад
There is no way you can achieve results that look great (the epoxy look that everyone expects) with only 1 to 3 boxes. Even if the concrete is smooth and all the other factors you've mentioned are properly taken care of, there needs to be a minimum thickness of the epoxy to get the results. 1 to 3 boxes is next to nothing when it comes to what actual epoxy floor pros would use. Just take a look at all the videos from the smaller companies who sell epoxy. They would have recommended 10 gallons of epoxy for this garage. He ended up putting 6 boxes of Rocksolid on. That is only 3 gallons of material. It is ridiculous that Rust-Oleum is recommending only half that amount. Bottom line is if you want great results it is going to cost some money so might as well do it right and spend it to get enough material.

I just tried this product on my new concrete floor, 2 boxes that advertise 400-500sqft only covered 200sqft and was so thin I could see concrete better than I could the mica(metallic) flake. The Rustoleum kits at HD/Lowes for ~$100 are great. It will cover a 2 car garage like the box says. I did this to my current house 2-3yrs ago and it is holding up and looks good. These are paint flake kits and may explain the consistent coverage. I’m going to be doing this again in a 3 car garage soon and will probably grab 2 kits and some extra flakes.

Just a couple tips for you, if you ever run into problems and have to redo this. If it's been over 7 days since you applied that first coat with this coating, you should hit the floor with a light sanding with 100 grit paper, or a floor screen. Past 7 days the coats won't have a chemical bond, and you will instead need to create the proper amount of "tooth" for the new coat to grab to. You may see delamination of the top coat appear later down the line. Use a jiffy style paddle when mixing the components together, or another paddle designed for resinous coatings, as well as ensure it is the proper size for the amount you are mixing up, so that it is fully submerged into the material. This will limit the amount of air you draw into the mixture, which can be a problem with some resinous coatings, leaving bubbles in the surface after it has cured. Use a squeegee/magic trowel to apply resinous coatings for the initial spreading of material on thick coats. This just makes life easier, and lets you control the variation in the epoxy more effectively. Normally contractors would also backroll a system like this, which is exactly what it sounds like. You just go back to the beginning and roll over it using a mohair to 3/8" nap approx. Use cleats or spike shoes to walk over the wet material. I'm a concrete geek
@mschmidt9150
@mschmidt9150 5 лет назад
Only one person should roll it on since two different people will spread using different pressure, making the variations obvious
@AGCampagna
@AGCampagna 5 лет назад
You are correct. You MUST abrade between coats. If not, the top coat will delaminate in time. This coming from a flooring contractor. I hope this is the one time peeling won't happen. Good luck.

If you left it longer than a week between the first and final coats, you must scuff up (lightly sand) the floor to avoid delamination of the new epoxy coating. Hoping it all works out well for you.

Thank you for posting the video. If you are saying that one box is $100, how many square feet of coverage would you say that you really used, to get the 'look and texture' that you wanted for that money? If you spent $700, and got really only about 1.5 car garage of coverage, that's quite pricey, or perhaps that's why the places that do this for customers, actually charge so much, because they really layer it on heavy like that, and don't follow the box suggestions for use / coverage....!?

So the box said two kits for single car garage? Is that for two coats or a single coat? Correct me if I'm wrong, but 1 kit is one box? I would suspect that it's just for a single coat. So for two coats you would need 8 kits for a double garage like yours.

I’ve a 5000 sqft warehouse that I coated in floor paint that was nowhere near as much as the rustoleum, I used my Wagner airless sprayer, and the finish on it is immaculate. Flat, smooth and nowhere near as much work. With the quality of the concrete, should even make it stand out with just a light top coat
@SportSoulLife
@SportSoulLife 6 лет назад
Yup. Im a Sailor so painting is part of my job. It was painful to watch them use the roller like that. More exhausting, pulls your mucles in a way that can make you really stiff the next day, ruin the roller and much worse finnish as the paint isnt applied evenly. Its thicker on the top and bottom of the swirls as well as the edges of the roller when it passed sideways, you gather paint on the plastic part of the roller making it give out paint less evenly and you rip cotton (or whatever its made of) off the roller due to the abrasive concrete, which stays in the the paint as well as worsens the rollers performance in taking up and spreading paint evenly.
@SportSoulLife
@SportSoulLife 6 лет назад
Neil Dougan I think for a small garage floor like this it would be easyer with a roller. When spraying, espeially in small areas, you need to cover up every last inch of what you dont want painted to prevent overspray. Spraying does give the best result, but its usually used for large scale projects since it needs a lot of preperation.
@tonym71

Looks better, but in my experience the Rustoleum floor epoxy isn't good long term. Repairing it is just throwing good money after bad. I did all the cleaning and prep, including etching and mine scratched up quickly with using tools in the garage and couldn't hold up to floor jacks, so I ended up using Race Deck over it for a few years, then used the product you used to have, SwissTrax. Swisstrax is much better than RaceDeck due to being thicker and quieter. Easier to replace a spare Swisstrax tile if you ruin one.
@benjames721
@benjames721 5 лет назад
Hey mate, just letting you know that your not the only person that Rustoleum duped with their fake advertising of the supposed coverage. I have a 7.5m x 4.5m work shed that I am renovating. Firstly I used a concrete grinder to get my floor perfect, then used the probably 6 boxes of the crack filler. I did go with the Rustoleum primer for my floor, as in the instructions they say that it will use less of the main coat. Unfortunately I unboxed my primer and main coat at the same time and for some unknown reason Rustoleum decided no to label anywhere on their packaging the difference between the primer bag, main coat bag and the clear top coat bag. This is just a really big oversight by Rustoleum and when each bag is inspected closer all of the bags are EXACTLY THE SAME!!! Why Rustoleum ???? So you can probably guess where this story is going, after rolling the 4th bag down in my shed, I went to open the 5th bag and guess what, it wasn't primer but main coat...... So I ended up just using that pack as a primer packet, all in all 6 primer packs in which Rustoleum say will cover 134 square meters but yet it only did 34 square meters, alarm bells should have started ringing but too late I had already purchased 4 more main coat packs and 2 clear coat packs. And guess what they were still not enough to cover my floor. So now that I am so far down this rabbit hole, I have acquired 8 more packs. I too have come to the same conclusion as yourself more is better so in the next week or so I will see if a total of 20 packs of this great product will actually be enough to cover my floor. Oh and in Australia they sell Rustoleum in a 2 car garage pack (2 bags of epoxy) for, wait for it $280..... So Iv spent over $5k on my stupid floor that all these other you tube videos say is fantastic. Thanks for making a real video of what people should expect when they use Rustoleum.

You need to use a squeegee and spread it out first then take an 18 inch roller and back roll it.

Literally watched first video, drive to Lowe’s, but product ($166 per box), installed product on my garage (2boxes-2car garage), come inside and shower, sit down and THEN this video pops up 😕. Guess I’ll be applying another 2-3 boxes tomorrow. Question though! Did you ever apply a top clear coat?

I went to Home Depot and bought three gallons of gun metal garage floor paint for $35 a pop. Put down all three coats then purchased the five gallon clear epoxy for $100 and put three layers of clear. Floor look great and cost less than $500!

One of the biggest complaints I hear about the big box epoxies is that the color batches are never the same. You need to get the same lot number when you buy epoxy and that typically is not possible when you buy it from a big box store. The second most popular complaint is that it peels because the preparation was done incorrectly “as per the manufacturer specifications”. Always diamond grind or shotblast, always install a primer first and you won’t have any problems.

You should’ve used a squeegee, it makes it easier to maneuver. Plus, it spreads it evenly and you could’ve had it looking better.

If you're doing a garage floor STEER CLEAR OF ROCKSOLID FLOOR COATINGS!! There's a reason the packaging says indoor use only and its because sunlight discolors the coating. I coated my gaarge floor 3 years ago and its yellowed horribly about 6 feet in from the overhead door. I'm looking at spending $5k+ to have it removed and coated with a product suited to the environment.

Floor probably needed sealing before the first coat.
