In this video I swap out my 2006 Sequoias fully electronic transfer case for a manual case from a 2007 FJ Cruiser.

I burned 2 actuators up with my switch. They worked great until they didn't anymore. Luckily they both got stuck in the engaged position. Since then at my shop we've done two manual t-case swaps and used this 12th State Offroad harness with great results:

@@treehouseoffroad I think it's a generational thing and/or a result of having access to the internet. As much as I hate to sound like my dad... back when I was younger and before the internet, we knew how to ask questions and how to find the information. We didn't have dopes on RU-vid showing us how to do things the wrong way, we had physical factory service manuals with greasy thumb printed pages. It just blows my mind that with access to a near bottomless supply of information (the internet) where nearly the entire works of human history are reposited, where you can earn a masters degree on the same thing in your pocket that you take pictures of your cats and kids with, people still need to be spoon fed info, and when presented with the fountain to drink from, they'd rather be handed glasses of water. It's just baffling.

Welcome to the rock crawling world, where you’ll learn how rocks can grow arms and legs to karate chop you. 😂 nice vid bro! That’s actually what I was considering doing if mine ever goes out. Also by switching your front axle actuator to a switch…. I would imagine that can lead to some mishap if not properly engage…. I wouldn’t lock it up under a load and also after engaging it I would get some rotation going and then hit the switch again to just make sure it’s all the way engage. Vs OEM set up it will sense when it’s fully engage and then stop sending power… just a heads up. 🤘
@treehouseoffroad
@treehouseoffroad Год назад
Good advice for sure. The ADD gears/sleeve have kind of a synchro setup and engage super easily even under stress. I still come to a complete stop before engaging it though

My transfer case has been having issues for the last couple of months and I've been looking into doing the swap. The main thing that was going to be difficult for me was the wiring and figuring out what to do with the front diff actuator. I have a 2005 tundra which is pretty much identical to the sequoia as far as far as wiring goes if I understand correctly.

This is great! Been watching your vids for awhile now. I have an 03 with the 4 speed and plan on doing a project like this when my actuator finally croaks haha. This might be a stupid question, does this change how you activate your center diff lock? 🤔
@treehouseoffroad
@treehouseoffroad Год назад
Not a stupid question, this t case does not have a center diff lock. It essentially is permanently "center diff locked". In 4wd this case performs exactly as your case would with your center diff lock on. The only feature you lose when you do this swap is all wheel drive. Although I did use AWD on occasion, I haven't really missed it since doing this swap. I hope this helps
@J_Pav
@J_Pav Год назад
Ohhh I see makes sense. I never really used the AWD since my year allows center lock in 4H. I do a lot of beach driving so corrosion and delicate electronics are always in the back of my mind ☠️ thanks for the answer! Looking forward to seeing your future projects!

Nice video. I've been wanting to get another 05-07 but also thinking about flat towing it behind the RV. That would need a transfer case that I can shift into neutral. I am curious if the shifter assembly from the 01-04 would swap over and no cutting/welding of the shift lever.

The FJ case has a neutral position, not sure if I'm missing something in your comment.

@pkt1213 8 дней назад
Just saying if I can not figure out how to get the Sequoia case into neutral, this would be an option. Second was, I wonder if the 01-04 Sequoia shift lever would bolt to the new transfer case and eliminate the need to weld the fj lever.

@thonvuth809
@thonvuth809 Год назад
Hey i know the video is older now and you Finnished the swap a while ago but.. i was wondering about the sequoia speed sensor located next to the fill plug. Im sure you took that off (one x12mm) and removed a blank plug from the FJ TC to swap on the sequoia one in. My question is the sequoia has a plastic gear that spins on the spline gear on the sequoia one but my FJ cruiser TC has no spline on the inside(smooth shaft) so the plastic gear on the speed sensor has no way to attach or line up to spin to get a speed reading. Did you have a problem with your cluster or is it only me with this random fj tc? Lol thanks any info be nice

TRAC is disabled as I have front & rear e-lockers, but others have reported that once you remove the 4WD ECU from the equation it throws the traction control off. I'm sure there's a solution for this if someone wanted to figure it out badly enough
@jonmccann1324
@jonmccann1324 11 месяцев назад
I was wondering, with this swap is your VSC still working and if not, is it a big concern to you? My 07 has been putting itself in 4WD and locking the diff on its own. I can’t afford to replace the actuator right now, so I removed the 4WD ECM instead, just to ensure that it stays in 2WD while I save up for the repair. This, however, has turned off the VSC. I can’t image it’s good, but I’m pretty sure none of the the early first gens had it. 🤷‍♂️
@treehouseoffroad
@treehouseoffroad 11 месяцев назад
Disabling the VSC was one of the first things I did when I got my truck. It was causing me issues when pulling out into traffic from a stop. It's a common thing in the first gen community for people to disable VSC/TRAC, it especially starts acting wacky when you lift your truck and put bigger tires on it. All model years of the 1st gen Sequoia have Vehicle Stability Control. It sounds like your 4WD ECU maybe malfunctioning, I've never heard of this problem before.
@jonmccann1324
@jonmccann1324 11 месяцев назад
@@treehouseoffroad - good to know. My truck was at the dealership for 10 weeks. Yeah, that’s right… 10 weeks. Their best guess was that the 4WD ECM was the problem and not the actuator. I swapped the 4WD ECM with one from a salvaged truck. It made no difference. I think the actuator and/or ADD is the problem. The vacuum line on the transfer case actuator was dry-rotted and separated when the problem started.
@treehouseoffroad
@treehouseoffroad 11 месяцев назад
@@jonmccann1324 Wow 10 weeks that's insane. I had a similar situation when I first got my truck. What I've learned is the t-case actuator, the front diff ADD actuator, and the 4wd ECU all communicate. If one of those things isn't operating correctly, it won't complete it's 2wd-4wd cycle properly. It's an overly complex system, get an FJ case and be done with it! Also you probably know this but there are only vent lines on the actuators, no vacuum lines.
