Cleaning and inspecting my 1987 freightliner cab over restoration project with a big cam cummins 350 with a eaton fuller 9 spd and rockwell rears. Music: Miami Musician: Deleted Account URL: icons8.com/music/
Ask me anything about that truck, I ran and worked on one just like it, it will start with 2 but 3 batteries is better, that transmission is what is called a 9 speed overdrive, big ratio difference between 8th and 9th, it is a reverse shift pattern 9th gear is all the way over and up instead of back. I had a low flow in mine worked well but some guys don't like them, run it that low flow if it works is better I rigged a manual switch in mine to turn the fan one if the temp came up. it never over heated. Engine holds 44 quarts don't for get to change the anti freeze filter on the front of the engine above the altenator. Truck will max out about 70 miles per hour on the flat with a wind at your back. Wire brush the engine and get down cummins paint. Check your cab air bags on the back of the cab they usually go bad. I can tell you right now it does not have a 10 million, my guess it has about 500,000 on it engine probably needs an in frame but you don't know mine was fine it did not use a drop of oil between oil changes.
@@jeffusher4854 decent load on it will help smooth it out but he already has a short wheel base and sitting in front of steering . Its a beautiful truck though and I have drove a few of those .
@@bootlegger3656 I drove a LTL for years with a four spring it was that rough it used to crack the diff housings and that was with a bonnet. But hey not bagging the guy it’s a cool old truck and can’t wait to see what he does with it
One of the most rewarding things is getting your new piece of equipment home and with some hard graft turning something that looks a bit of a turd into a gem, the way that thing cleaned up is fantastic. 👍
I believe the sticker is when the next service was due. I only see a 999,999 guage with a tenth spot. I really like that you are bringing it back to life. Thanks for the videos.
That truck cleaned up really good ,awesome truck looking forward to hear it start and drive. Watching from South Africa. PS love your attitude ,no school ,learning on the go.
@@dannyrichardson6319 no spoke wheels and wedges are Daytons , the ones on the front are a split rim since they have a locking ring since those are tube type tires on those Alcoa wheels,
@@christramontana3598 no the split rims are s bias tire which is a steel rim. It has a lock ring with a flap, tube then the tire. It is mounted on a spoke rim with 5 wedges and the lug nuts righted the rim to the hub. You also have a bird rim which has a inner stud that bolts the inside rim to the hub then the outside rim is bolted down by lug nuts. The other style rim is a uni mount rim these has a week lug nut that mounts the rim. A lot of company's stopped using the split rims because they are extremely dangerous if the lock rim flies off
Brings back memories of that rough-riding son of a gun Shaker cabover. I drove one like it but it was a single axle truck back in the early nineties. I worked for a guy who owned 5 trucks leased to then Roadway Package System, now known as FedEx ground after they were bought by them. I pulled doubles from NJ down to Fla, and then to Harrisburg PA, and back to NJ weekly. Mine was plain Jane compared to that one, not visor, no shiny wheels, it had spokes up front and budds on the back for wheels. She wasn't fast or a looker, but she made money for my boss back then and got me a paycheck.
Nice to see someone pressure washing the right way on youtube. Start top to bottom. I cant believe how many people do bottom to top. Good job. I drove those Freightliner cabovers back in the 80's. They were great trucks.
As a newb back in the early 90s, I wondered why so many shops insisted that the driver raise the cab, until it was my turn. Fortunately, I didn't have anything hard and heavy loose, but it did take a bit to get re-organized after I got the truck out of the shop. The mech explained that they didn't want to be responsible for damage from loose junk.
Get your CDL buddy ! It's worth it. Been trucking for over 25 years but gave it up as I wanted to be at home more. Still miss being out on the road sometimes. The truck is looking mighty fine for how old it is ! Cheers, Ard
I owed a 88 freight shaker years ago , if had a 400 Cat with a 9 speed air ride ..jet black . Awesome truck bought as a spare but once I added a chrome eight inch exhaust pipe drop down visor and lots of lights , my guys would almost fight over who was going to drive it . Your truck brings a lot of great memories for me of mine . Your going to love this truck believe me . Shawn
I'm actually building a plastic model kit of a very similar truck, but with the same engine. I've looked for photos online of how certain parts should look or where they should go and this is the best look at the engine I've had. Also, a very cool truck that I want to see you fix up.
Great videos man. I'm not a trucker but I love American 18 wheelers since I was a kid especially the classic Peterbilts and Kenworths. There are also a lot of old American Cab Over trucks here in my country. Freightliners are the best for me. I cold started one of them three years ago and it was a real badass awesome cab over rig. I'm happy for you and your truck. Enjoy and drive safe. Greetings from Manila Philippines.
So watching your video what a beautiful Cabover Freightliner I started out in Cabover's back in the day before you start her up change the oil and oil filters and fuel filter but pull the exhaust pipe and check for any birds nest and while the exhaust pipe is off then start it up because it could reb up to shut her down then use a block of wood and cover the turbo that will cut the air off to the Motor good luck with your build look forward to the next video
Think your spot on adding the two ks together to get the true distance the freightliner has travelled. Power wash looking better but it has lots of baked on grease sill. Can't wait to see it go. Keep the video's comming. Thanks for sharing with us.
cpl is the "critical parts list" it identifies what injectors, piston, turbo and so on were used to build the engine. cid is "cubic in displacement". just for your information, those are 950 cold cranking amp batteries. those screw on post adapters are worthless on that. your positive read cable looks like too small of cable. it may have 2 positives that go to the starter to carry the amperage needed. look in the passenger side tool box on the cab. there might be a wiring diagram on the inside of the door. not sure if they still did that in 87. i think you scored big on this truck. i may have 10 24.5 ball and seat alcoas around here. doesnt look like the tanks need acid washed....looks like they just need polished. you can drive that truck anywhere as a private individual without a cdl. cdl stands for "commercial drivers license" . commercial means "to be in commerce". private use is not in commerce. many folks register them as "recreational vehicle". plates and insurance are usually pennies on the dollar. if you need any help with that get in touch with me.
CDL rules vary dramatically, Connecticut is one of the worst states for DOT rules, so you may want to discuss things with the people that run any of the many weigh stations in your state. I think CT uses "Traffic Enforcement" to handle CDL/weigh stations. You will also most likely need a different insurance policy as most won't allow a truck that big without it being either commercial or an RV. And as JC said "in commerce" is the big term, try to get someone to actually define it though.... I run a big truck without DOT numbers (I do have a class A CDL and a medical card), the truck is registered and titled in my personal name, insurance is in both my Company and personal name (I have a business, but don't use the trucks for that), even with all this, I still have to follow all the DOT rules and regulations or risk having an issue. I am willing to bet that CT will give you a hard time all the time, in the last four months, I have had five friends get stopped on Saturday and Sunday in CT, I try and stay out of there as my truck is overweight on the front axle by 500 pounds and I don't want to find out what they will do to me. If you end up registering the truck for 55,000 or more, you also have to file the federal HVUT (Heavy Vehicle Use Tax), but if you drive under 5000 miles a year, you only have to file, you don't pay any fees. If you can truly get a "farm" plate, I would do that, it allows 150 mile radius from the farm to use a bigger truck without a CDL, might also make you exempt from other rules as well. This is 150 "air mile" so it is a pretty good are, depending on where you live of course. Now let the next guy tell you something completely different than everything I just posted........
@@thesalvagegarage Right you are, we went to the Macungie Pa. show a few years back and heard an old guy that had given up his CDL talking about how he got an out of class and no med. card ticket for driving his personal rig to the show. He's not in commerce anymore, it's registered with historic plates but the trooper said GVW still rules and gave him the ticket. It's all state to state BS if you ask me but states rights are the way of the world we live in.
Normally if the truck doesn't weigh more than 26,001 lbs then you don't need a CDL.But other states will try any kind of excuse,if it has air brakes then you might need one,the list goes on.It really just depends on what state you live in.
JC that was something even I didn't know. I am thinking on picking up a 91 FREIGHTLINER cab over. The engine and frame R like this kids truck you could almost eat off it. I was told the original owner passed away and the new property owners just want to get rid of the truck as far as they know it was running when the guy passed on. Someone just recently they said may have been the realty company moved it out of the barn so the barn could be structurally inspected for the auction where they got the property from. Everything checks out there is even some juice in the batteries just there is no keys no title no guarantee the thing will even run. The only good sign of the deal is nothing is taken apart indicating there were problems with it. I talked the people into accepting $500 cash 4 it now I have to talk myself into buying it. WITH YOUR ADIVCE THAT I DON'T NEED A CDL TO OPERATE IT OR SPECIAL EXPENSIVE INSURANCE I JUST MIGHT BUY IT. I WANT TO BUY THIS HUGE FIFTH WHEEL CAMPER A BUDDY HAS SO THIS JUST MIGHT WORK OUT. I EVEN THINK THE TIRES ARE IN DECENT SHAPE. I ONLY HAD ABOUT 10 MIN AFTER WORK TO LOOK AT IT. SO I AM GONNA GO BACK WITH A TOW COMPANIES MASTER KEYs. I HAVE A FRIEND THAT TOWS FOR A BIG NAME OUTFIT HERE HE SAID IF ONE OF THEIR MASTER KEYS WORKS I COULD PROBABLY SAVE THE 600 BUCKS TO TOW IT. I DON'T KNOW HOW TRUE THAT IT IS BUT HE TOLD ME THE COMPANY CHARGES EXTRA MONEY FOR UNLICENSED TRUCKS... This seems like a dream come true because thing is like new when ya look at it. The sleeper bed still has plastic and clothes on top of this factory looking plastic. it has a really clean appearance. The owners said the property sat 16 years before it was even cleaned up for a slave so the truck may have been sitting a better part of 20 years from what I was told about it.
Glad you saved this truck cant believe that clean of a truck was just parked cleaned up well id get some good wax and buff the paint on the cab bet it would shine up pretty well sweet truck
Love the truck my dad and i both worked for interstate trucking company and you have a good truck the Cummins moter is a Good one good luck the company took good care of the trucks Have fun (ross from hemming towing)
after 9 years doing service oil changes & filters we was told never raise the cab more then the safety latch because many those pumps dont hold the pressure and the cab could go face down & the pump would not be good enough to right itself just a precaution ! ask JC Smith about those bad pumps im sure he had a few go nose down before ! On the battery's you must hooked them as 24 volt to melt the post off ! It's been 26 yrs since i worked on them & i loved doing the cab over services yeh took longer but most that time was making sure the cab was secured before raising them & access to all the filters was wide open & once you know your way around you got a nice truck skip the acid on the tanks they just need buffed out they look great after the pressure wash ! God Bless & Enjoy this gem ! mileage add them together be correct !
That's not a sensor, it's a switch, when you shift into reverse, it turns on the back up lights shift back to neutral and the switch turns off the back up lights
Wrong!! it’s the cable that connects to the tilt cab, when you want to drive with the cab tilted all the way down to see the road better while your driving!
You are living my dream bud! I hope to someday own a Cab Over myself to haul around a fifth wheel camper. Stumbled upon your videos looking for cab over videos. Definitely subbing to follow the rebuild of this! Keep up the good work!
Those broken wires on the transmission is for back up light switch, a good idea when you jack your cab over center is to put a chain to hold the cab from falling over, have seen the rams just blow apart and the cab hits the ground, reminds me of when I bought a 73 Freightliner cab over many years ago, brings back good memories, The plate on the fuel pump is cosmetic, has aneroid adjustment behind it. Should have 4 batteries Make sure you keep the engine tag has all the numbers you need for engine parts etc. Low flow coolant can be trouble, biggest problem was bottom baffle in rad tank need to change the water rail grommets when changing to high flow cooling as well as front rail thermostat housing and radiator as well as some piping. have changed many in my career as a heavy duty mechanic for Cummins. Probably a new speedometer. 232 could be oil change interval. I think it would be over a million. nice truck my friend.
Don’t miss the days of driving cabover setting over the steer tire. Those trucks are the reason I have back and neck problems today. Would still like to have one to use for parades and truck shows
I used to maintain one of these tractors the gentleman who owned it put over 4 million miles on it up to the year he retired in 2011. It was immaculate
Sweet looking cabover. I love cabovers and miss them on the highways. International Transtar and emeryville are my favorite cabovers but still like all cabover trucks.
I think the mileage is accurate. The sticker up top is probably for it’s next service mileage. Good luck with your project. I had a brand new one back in the day. I wish I had it again!
i have the same truck got it bran new i bet the milige it true the peddles will ware like that in that amount of time mine has 800,000 and mine cant even tell it had dimands on then great trucks you might like driving it
Jolly green looks great power washed I agree with your mileage at 460,000 give or take can’t wait to see what rubbing paint out ... hopefully the starter is the problem! Good luck with getting her running..
Very Nice! Miles 460,000 sounds about right! I'm currently looking at running and driving Cabovers from the 70's an 80's. They all seem to be right around there. Just depends if the "Speedo" was changed when the engine was Rebuilt! lt also depends who you bought it from! Farm or Farmer, Dealer, Auction, Private or from some company! This has been my experience! FYI
Greetings from the Ohio Porters. Well, it sure cleaned up pretty well. I would highly recommend that you remove the 5th wheel and its plate to get a better look at the frame there. When you go to repaint the frame it will be more accessible. Be sure to reinstall it or replace the plate if needed. Looks like you have a metal frame that’s in pretty good shape. A 12 volt starter will be easier and cheaper to replace. It should even run on 1 or 2 batteries. You can always pull a gooseneck trailer or put another hitch on it. It should pull anything you want. Keep it comin and keep recording all that you do. Remember...Cabovers Rule! 🥰🇺🇸
There's a lot of trucks that have a million miles capabilities, while back in 87 it wasn't very common , but obviously you have one with the million mile speedodometer. That's pretty cool makes your truck even more rare I drove a lot of old cabovers, Freightliner wasn't my favorite, but it's a close 3rd. I drove a 77 GMC Astro, and it had a very good heater. Same for Ford WT 9000 better heaters than Kenworth or Peterbuilt .I also drove an International Transtar 2, again the heater wasn't as good as the GMC or the Ford, the GMC rode better, but it did have air ride suspension
NTC-350,9 SPD,Hendrickson suspension,and Rockwell rears...You got a great rig right there...I actually don't think I've ever seen a FL86 with a small transmission like that,that's different.
The loose plate on the fuel pump is just an anti tamper plate dont worry about it the anoroid screw is located behind it when you get it going you can adjust it for quicker throttle response but it will smoke more... ez rider has some really great videos on this engine as well explaining what everything does
If it vet a million miles the left side digit would be lower then the rest of them , typically when they roll over the digit on the left is lower than the ready of them , and that peddle wear is over noe million miles of use in my opinion,f you jack up the front end and check the king pins to see if they are lose , if they are then I would say for sure it has a million miles on it , kool thanks your doing an amazing job with the lighting and angles and content of your channel thank you , BigAl California.
As for the cooling system I remember that issue with the flow of coolant. What freightliner did to deal with it was have the fan run continuously which burned more fuel.
I put a half million miles on a 1974 cabover frieghliner and would agree with your assessment on the milage. Lots of memories the wear on the pedals are right
You got a really really nice truck I can’t get over how good condition it’s in for sitting all those years and the what 200,000 plus on it Don’t skimp on repairs do it right and it will pay off in the long run
Thanks! I agree with you. I want it pretty much perfect just incase I get addicted to truckin I don't want anything slowing me down once I'm out there!
